DRAFT PGA Recommended Plays: Wyndham Championship

The Wyndham Championship held in Greensboro, North Carolina is sandwiched right in-between a major championship and the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs which means it is the last stop in the PGA Tour regular season. For that reason, a lot of big-name players are taking this week off in preparation for the playoffs which start up next week and run through the end of September. For my sake, I am glad this is the last time I will be covering a tournament that features inferior players. It is very difficult to generate interest in a tournament where casual DFS players do not recognize 90% of the golfers competing. There are a few household names sprinkled in this tournament but nothing like what we will see in the weeks ahead.

Storylines
Most of the storylines this week will revolve around FedEx Cup narratives and whether or not a few select players can weasel their way into the playoffs before next weekend. One of those players is Sergio Garcia. Garcia’s performance in the past 18 months can only be described as the longest Masters hangover in the history of the sport. He strung together three consecutive top 10 finishes back in early March but has only made two cuts since that point. Garcia has been considered one of the premier talents on Tour for over a decade so for him to be struggling this much is truly puzzling. He is currently sitting at 131st place in the FedEx Cup standings and will have to play well this week to crack the top 120 before the playoffs start next Thursday. Henrik Stenson is returning to Greensboro to defend his crown from last season. Webb Simpson is one of the better players in this field and loves playing in this event. He won his first-ever tournament on the PGA Tour here and even named one of his children “Wyndham.” I understand that you like the place but I think we can all agree on that being a terrible child’s name.

The Course
It is a par-70 course that is a little over 7,100 yards in length, so it’s not long at all. It is one of the easiest courses golfers will see all season. There is a reason why Stenson carded a -22 last year. And since it’s not known for its length, most players can get away with simply using three-wood or lower on the tee and succeed. Stenson did not use his driver once last year and he tore this place apart. Water comes into play on a few holes but double-bogeys or worse are very hard to come by here according to relative statistics. It is a Donald Ross design so a few tee-shots are blind but nothing too tricky. The greens are the only semi-difficult part of this course, as they run as some of the fastest non-major greens on the PGA Tour circuit. Golfers will have to be dialed in on the greens in order to come out on top on Sunday.

Golfers to Target

Harold Varner III
Varner fired a seven-under in the first round last year en route to a T10 finish, so he’s shown that he can play well here. I really like him this week because of his recent form. He should tear apart these short Par 5s with his length off-the-tee.

Webb Simpson
He named his child after this tournament. That’s how much he loves this course. He has won here before and should be riding high with confidence after locking up a Ryder Cup spot last week.

Rafa Cabrera-Bello
He ranks 13th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and is coming off a T10 at the PGA Championship last weekend. He hasn’t missed a cut since the wonky Zurich Classic which is a partners-tournament. He seems like as safe of a bet as any to make the cut and finish in the top 20.

Daniel Berger
Not the best season for Berger, but he is starting to round into form. He is second in Strokes Gained: Approach in the last 24 rounds.

Tyler Duncan
Don’t look now, but this guy quietly has not missed a cut since mid-April. He ranks in the top 50 in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, Approach and off-the-tee. If he can somehow find a way to get his putter going, he could fare very well here.
