I’m not advocating ponying up for the five-figure pitchers tonight, and instead, I’m touting a quartet of sub-$9,000 hurlers. Two of whom check in at under $8,000. The price tags on the pitchers suggested below free up ample space to spend on some high-end boppers. There is not full stack, but there are a couple of teammates suggested as part of the high-upside collection of hitters for tonight’s picks.

Cole Hamels (CHC): $8,700 @ Pirates
Remember when Hamels ended his stay with the Rangers by allowing seven runs in three of his last four starts? He’s distanced himself from the stench of those stinkers by pitching like a whole new man with the Cubs. He’s pitched five innings or more while allowing exactly one run in each of his three starts with the Cubs. Overall in that three-game stretch, he’s pitched 18 innings to the tune of a 1.00 ERA (1.94 FIP, 2.76 xFIP, 2.89 SIERA), 0.83 WHIP, 5.8% BB%, 29.0% K%, and 12.4% SwStr%, according to FanGraphs. His O-Swing% has crept up each start with the Cubs, and he got more looking strikes with a 58.7% Z-Swing% in his last turn after hitters ferociously attacked on offerings in the strike zone (69.7% Z-Swing% and 76.6% Z-Swing% in his two prior turns). He recently tied up the Pirates on the first of the month holding them to just one run (unearned) on three hits, two walks, and nine strikeouts. Recency bias coupled with a reasonable salary is likely to inflate Hamels’ ownership rate, but he’s a strong play. He and the Cubs are -129 favorites, according to Pinnacle, and the Pirates have a team over/under total of only 3.5 runs.
