DraftKings PGA Recommended Plays: Dell Technologies Championship

The second stop of the FedEx Cup playoffs takes place in Boston, Massachusetts for the Dell Technologies Championship hosted by TPC Boston. It is a smaller field than usual, as only the top 100 players in the FedEx Cup standings remain after last week. Not only is it a smaller field, but the tournament will also begin on a Friday and end on Labor Day rather than Sunday. The cut will remain top 70, which means a lot of players entering this week’s contest will be playing throughout the weekend and into Monday. The top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings after the conclusion of this week’s tournament will advance to the third leg of the playoffs, the BMW Championship.

Storylines
I always feel bad for the PGA Tour because their playoff season is completely overshadowed by the beginning of the NFL season and the start of college football, but almost every star player will be competing this week. Rickie Fowler and Francesco Molinari will not compete but almost everyone else is here. Dell Technologies will no longer have a spot in the Tour playoffs next season since they are cutting down to only three tournaments from four.

The Course
TPC Boston has been a regular stop on Tour for about a decade now so most golfers teeing it up this week have a pretty good feel on how to score well here. It plays as a Par 71 and stretches out to 7,342 yards during tournament play, with a plethora of long Par 4s and Par 3s. Success with long-irons is going to be a critical component this week.

And just because the course is longer in length does not mean golfers can’t go low here. The course record is a 61 and it’s held by two different players so it is certainly possible if you can navigate the course efficiently while picking your spots. Phil Mickelson describes the course as one of the best risk/reward setups on Tour. I think Jon Rahm described the course perfectly in 2017:

“You can tell it’s a ball-striker’s course because on every green, there’s little sections for the pin to be at, right. It can be a big green, but there’s little sections you can hit it at. So being precise off the fairway, it’s going to give you some close birdie putts.”

Golfers to Target

Brooks Koepka $11,000
Hottest golfer in the world? Probably. He has carded three consecutive top-eight finishes including a win at the PGA Championship, another course that rewarded long-hitters off-the-tee. Koepka has entered a territory for me where I am targeting him on every lengthy-course, regardless of price. He has been nothing short of sensational on long setups, and I do not expect anything less this week.

Jordan Spieth $10,000
I think Spieth will go under-owned this week which is a good thing because I plan on owning a lot of him. He has always played well on courses that reward good ball-striking and this week should not be an exception. He finished second in last year’s Dell Technologies Championship, T21 in 2016, and T4 in 2013 so he clearly enjoys the setup.

Charley Hoffman $7,300
He might be a popular play as well, but he has torn this place apart in the last eight years. He fired a final-round 62 en-route to victory back in 2010 and shot a 63 in 2013 en-route to a third-place finish. His course history here is too hard for me to ignore.

Billy Horschel $8,100
I am not a big fan of the price because Horschel is typically around the $7K range, but he has been so impressive as of late. He has been hitting greens-in-regulation at an absurd rate, and he should be in line for a great finish if he can get his putter to be even a little bit better than it was last week. He’s coming off a T3 and a T11 the week prior.

Luke List $6,800
Every analyst in the business has been pumping his tires this week because he succeeds in nearly every category necessary to win here. Given the price, you can’t really go wrong.
