Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Jose Altuve, Chris Sale, Mike Trout

It’s already Week 18 of the fantasy baseball season, and there are all kinds of injuries to track as your regular season is winding down. Jose Altuve has been dealing with some discomfort in his right knee and has been on the 10-day disabled list since July 29, retroactive to July 26. The second baseman was expected to start baseball activities on Friday and possibly return on Sunday when first eligible, but he was not quite ready. He is now going to be held out through at least Tuesday and is expected to meet with Houston’s team doctors.

After being named pitcher of the month for July, Chris Sale landed on the disabled list on July 31 with inflammation in his left shoulder. Luckily the injury appears to be minor, and Sale is expected to return on August 8 with only one missed start.

Mike Trout has missed four games in a row after having to be removed from Wednesday’s game after a steal attempt. The All-Star has a contusion and inflammation in his right wrist. He is currently listed as day-to-day but was unable to swing a bat as recently as Saturday.

Here are a few more injuries we are tracking this week.

Buster Posey (C – SF)
Posey has missed the last couple of games after experiencing concussion symptoms on Friday. The Giants are going to be cautious with an injury like this, but Posey has not been placed on the disabled list at this point and is still listed as day-to-day.

Yan Gomes (C – CLE)
Gomes sat again on Sunday with tendinitis in his right hamstring. He is currently listed as day-to-day and looks like he will avoid a trip to the disabled list. He could return as early as Tuesday.

Tommy Pham (OF – TB)
Pham was placed on the 10-day DL on August 3 with a fracture in his right foot. The outfielder was hit by a pitch on Thursday. He is expected to miss two-to-four weeks and may be able to return before the end of August.

Rafael Devers (3B – BOS)
Devers was placed on the 10-day DL on July 29 with a left hamstring strain. He could return on August 8.

Ian Kinsler (2B – BOS)
Kinsler was placed on the 10-day DL with a left hamstring strain on August 4. The newly acquired second baseman injured himself rounding third base on Friday. He does not currently have a set date for his return.

Blake Swihart (C – BOS)

Delino DeShields (OF – TEX)
DeShields is having concussion symptoms and is on the 7-day DL. He could return when first eligible on August 10.

Steven Matz (SP – NYM)
Matz was placed on the 10-day DL on August 3 with a mild flexor pronator strain in his left forearm. He does not currently have a set date to return, but the Mets only expect him to miss one start.

Wil Myers (LF – SD)
Myers was placed on the 10-day DL on August 4 with a left foot contusion and a bone bruise. He is in a walking boot and does not have a set timetable to return.

Pablo Sandoval (3B – SF)
Sandoval went on the DL on July 30 with a hamstring strain. Unfortunately, the strain will require surgery that will end his season. Sandoval is expected to have the surgery this week.

Tyler Skaggs (SP – LAA)
Skaggs was placed on the DL on August 4 with a left adductor strain. The injury comes after a horrific outing in which he gave up 10 runs on Tuesday. The Angels expect him to only miss one start and return on Saturday.

Chris Devenski (RP – HOU)
Devenski hit the DL on August 3 with tightness in his left hamstring. He does not currently have a set date to return.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (2B – TOR)
Gurriel has a left knee and ankle sprain that put him on the shelf on August 1. He is expected to miss two-to-six weeks and has a chance to return before the end of August.

Dexter Fowler (OF – STL)
Fowler broke his left foot after fouling a ball off his foot on Friday. He is expected to spend a month in a walking boot and could return in September. He was placed on the DL on August 4.

Martinez has a right shoulder strain and was placed on the DL on July 31. His status for a return has yet to be announced.

Alex Wood (SP – LAD)
Wood was placed on the 10-day DL with left adductor tendinitis on August 4. He is expected to return sometime in mid-August.

Johnny Cueto (SP – SF)
Cueto was placed on the 10-day DL on July 30. He underwent Tommy John surgery on August 2 and might be able to return in late 2019. Cueto had tried to rehab the injury in April after a visit with Dr. James Andrews revealed that rehab could be a solution. His four start return resulted in a ligament tear that needed to be repaired with surgery.
