Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Trevor Bauer, Chris Sale, Joey Votto

Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Trevor Bauer, Chris Sale, Joey Votto

It’s Week 20 of the fantasy season, and we are here to give you all the latest injury updates to get you ready for the fantasy playoffs.

Trevor Bauer was hit with a line drive last Saturday and had to be removed from the game. Preliminary X-rays revealed a stress fracture in his right fibula. The All-Star was placed on the 10-day DL on August 14, retroactive to August 12. He could be cleared to resume throwing from a standing position in 10 days, and he could begin mound work in 20 days. Expect him to return in mid-to-late September. Adam Plutko filled in the rotation for Bauer, but Josh Tomlin could also be an option.

Chris Sale hit the 10-day DL for the second time this month with inflammation in his left shoulder. He was placed on the disabled list on August 18 after only one start. The injury does not appear as serious as before, but the Red Sox are being cautious with their ace.

Joey Votto was placed on the 10-day disabled list on August 17 after trying to play since August 4 with a contusion on his right lower leg. Votto was hit by a pitch on August 4 by Ryan Madson. It looks like this could just be a minimum trip to the disabled list for Votto, and he could return on August 26.

Here are a few more injuries we are tracking this week.

Rafael Devers (3B – BOS)
Devers was placed on the 10-day DL on August 17 with a strain in his left hamstring. He does not currently have a set date to return.

Eric Thames (OF – MIL)
Thames is listed as day-to-day with soreness in his right knee. He had to come out of a game on August 17 after colliding with Lorenzo Cain while making a catch in the first inning.

CC Sabathia (SP – NYY)
Sabathia was placed on the 10-day DL on August 13 with inflammation in his right knee. He had the knee drained on August 13 and could return before the end of the month.

Ross Stripling (SP – LAD)
Stripling hit the 10-day DL on August 15 with lower back inflammation. There is no timetable set for his return. He was just moved to the bullpen after the loss of Kenley Jansen.

Marcus Stroman (SP – TOR)
Stroman was placed on the disabled list Sunday after coming out of a game early on August 17 with a blister on his right middle finger. He has been dealing with the issue since early August, and the Blue Jays decided to give him a chance to recover.

Didi Gregorius (SS – NYY)
Gregorius was injured while colliding into Kendrys Morales at first base on Sunday. He is currently listed as day-to-day with a heel injury and could be facing a DL stint.

Mike Montgomery (SP – CHC)
Montgomery was placed on the 10-day DL on August 17 with inflammation in his left shoulder. It is not clear at this point when he will be able to return.

Brandon Nimmo (OF – NYM)
Nimmo is listed as day-to-day after injuring his left index finger. X-Rays were negative and an MRI revealed no structural damage, but he remained out of the lineup this weekend.

Jeremy Hellickson (SP – WAS)
Hellickson was placed on the 10-day DL on August 18 with a right wrist sprain. He does not have a set return date.

Delino DeShields (OF – TEX)
DeShields has a fractured tip of his right middle finger and was placed on the 10-day DL on August 17.

Mike Minor (SP – TEX)
Minor is day-to-day with back stiffness. He was scratched from his scheduled start on August 17.

Updating Previous Injuries

Yu Darvish (SP – CHC) Shoulder
Darvish started a rehab assignment, but he was removed from a start on Sunday after just one inning. He is expected to have an MRI to reveal the severity of his injury.

Scott Schebler (OF – CIN) Shoulder
Schebler has been out for nearly a month after colliding with a wall. He is being sent on a rehab assignment on Monday and could be activated on Thursday.

Stephen Strasburg (SP – WAS) Neck
Strasburg has been on the 10-day DL since July 25 with a pinched nerve in his neck. He threw bullpen sessions and simulated games last week. He could possibly start for the Nationals on August 21.

Kyle Barraclough (RP – MIA) Back
Barraclough has been dealing with some lower back stiffness that put him on the shelf on August 10. He threw a 20-pitch sim game and off a mound on August 18. He could return on August 20, but the former closer will likely be used in more of a setup role.

Carlos Martinez (SP – STL) Shoulder
Martinez has been on the DL since July 31 with a right shoulder strain. He was sent on a Double-A rehab assignment last week and could return sometime this week.

Jimmy Nelson (SP – MIL) Shoulder
Nelson had shoulder surgery in September 2017 and was expected to return sometime in the second half. Unfortunately for the Brewers and fantasy owners, he is now unlikely to return this season. Nelson should be able to start fresh in 2019.

Jose Altuve (2B – HOU) Knee
Altuve was placed on the DL on July 29 with discomfort in his right knee. He was on a Triple-A rehab assignment over the weekend and could return to the Astros this week.

Max Fried (SP – ATL) Groin
Fried was placed on the 10-day DL  on August 8 with a groin strain. He was sent on a Triple-A rehab assignment last week and could return to the Braves on August 22.
