8 Players to Buy Low/Sell High (Fantasy Football)

8 Players to Buy Low/Sell High (Fantasy Football)

In the fantasy sports world, “buy low” and “sell high” are very familiar phrases. If you’re in a deep or highly competitive league, or are dealing with a barren waiver wire, trading becomes the primary avenue for you to improve your squad. If you’re a newcomer to fake football, buying low is all about gaining very talented players who haven’t lived up to their high expectations so far, whereas selling high is the act of trading away players who have produced well, but are due for regression. For instance, selling high on James Conner after Week 1 could’ve netted you great value at other positions, and buying a proven talent who plays for a prolific offense at less than his usual cost, like Kareem Hunt, could push you to a championship. So whether you’re looking to ship off an unexpected stud or acquire an elite player who’s down on his luck, our featured pundits are coming to your aid as they share their favorite buy low and sell high targets after the first two weeks of NFL action.

Q1. Who is your favorite buy-low trade candidate at this point in the season and who are you willing to give up for him?

David Johnson (RB – ARI)
“You can’t get much lower than Johnson’s stock right now playing for the 0-2 Cardinals. He has just 85 rushing yards and six receptions through two games after being a top-four pick in most fantasy drafts. The issue for Johnson right now is not ability or health; it is just volume. The coaching staff can correct volume and, after two blowout losses, look for Johnson to see a big jump in his usage going forward. He can probably be had for an up-and-coming WR2 who has started off the year strong.”
– Brad Richter (Going For 2)

“It’s got to be David Johnson. While I didn’t draft him on a single team due to his price and situation, nothing has changed. If you’d told me that I could get him in the third round, I would’ve jumped at the chance. I mean, what did we expect Johnson to do against the Rams last week? Seriously, did we expect him to have a top-10 game? While the offensive line is a problem, you cannot find a three-down back with his job stability for as cheap as he comes, not to mention the talent. I’m buying the stock at its low point. If you can get him for someone like T.Y. Hilton or Demaryius Thomas, you should be all over it. I’d even consider someone like Adam Thielen who’s had a hot start.”
– Mike Tagliere (FantasyPros)

Sony Michel (RB – NE)
“Get in on the ground floor with Michel. He saw just 13 snaps in his NFL debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the Patriots gave him 10 carries and two targets, so they wanted the ball in his hands when he was in the game. Rex Burkhead is a decent all-around player, but the Patriots spent a first-round pick on Michel for a reason. He could be primed for a bigger role and a breakout game this weekend against the league’s worst run defense in the Lions. If Michel hits in Week 3, he’ll cost you much more.”
– Matt Camp (Bleacher Report)

Joe Mixon (RB – CIN)
“Mixon might be missing the next couple of games, but he’s a great option in October and beyond. From a pure football standpoint, Mixon’s vision, confidence, and cutting ability is excellent. From a fantasy standpoint, he is handling the majority of the running back work for a much improved Bengals offense. It’s hard to predict what will get a deal done for an injured player, but a good starting point might be a player with a bloated statistical start like DeSean Jackson, Matt Breida, or Emmanuel Sanders.”
– Matthew Bowe (Razzball)

Alex Collins (RB – BAL)
“Collins is still an RB2 in my mind. He’s been unlucky with game flow to this point. Even if the Ravens primarily view him as a two-down back, he can help us since he operates behind a quality offensive line. I’d try to deal from depth and hopefully find Collins on an opponent roster that has reasonable RB depth. Collins still would be a fourth- or fifth-round pick if we redrafted today.”
– Scott Pianowski (Yahoo! Sports)

Q2. Who is your favorite sell-high candidate at this point in the season and what would you try to get in return?

Patrick Mahomes (QB – KC)
“Knowing how much we devalue quarterbacks in single-QB leagues, it’s got to be Mahomes. Look, I’m not going to sit here and tell you Mahomes hasn’t surprised me and shot up in my rest of season rankings. He has. The key thing to remember here is selling high on a replaceable position. There’s a reason we say to wait at quarterback. He may have another good game in Week 3, but plays the Broncos and Jaguars in Weeks 4 and 5. I’d move him for a startable wide receiver like Corey Davis or Golden Tate, though you may want to wait a week for Davis.”
– Mike Tagliere (FantasyPros)

“If you were lucky enough to draft Patrick Mahomes as a backup and now have two fantasy starters, this is a great time to turn him into a big asset or assets at other positions. Mahomes could certainly be on his way to an amazing season, but he’s not averaging five touchdowns per game. There might be a few teams in your league willing to give up a WR1 or RB1-type talent because they’re blinded by how bright Mahomes’ star is shining. Shoot high and don’t settle.”
– Matt Camp (Bleacher Report)

Adrian Peterson (RB – WAS)
“After his big Week 1 performance, everyone seems to have catapulted Peterson from a mid-round draft pick up into every-week starter status. The game script and an uncommon long reception for the 33-year-old back inflated his numbers, which came crashing back to earth in Week 2. Look to sell-high while his season-to-date fantasy production looks good and he is healthy. Swap him for a WR2 that has seen targets early on, but doesn’t have the fantasy production to go along with it, like Demaryius Thomas or Allen Robinson.”
– Brad Richter (Going For 2)

Phillip Lindsay (RB – DEN)
“An undrafted rookie for the Denver Broncos is top three in the league in rushing right now, and his name is Phillip Lindsay. He has been impressive in the first two weeks and has outperformed his counterpart, Royce Freeman. But when it is all said and done, I believe that Freeman will be the running back with the most fantasy points in the Broncos’ backfield. Freeman will be the running back in the red zone, and I also think the split on touches will land in his favor as the season goes on. I would target Quincy Enunwa or Sony Michel.”
– Matthew Bowe (Razzball)

Josh Gordon (WR – NE)
“I’m a human being, so yes, I’ll root for Gordon, too. But his breakout year was five seasons ago, an eternity in NFL years. The switch in culture from Cleveland to New England may help in time. But often wideouts struggle when asked to join new teams in the midst of a season; terminology, chemistry, that takes time. If you own Gordon, make sure others know he’s available via trade. I bet you can get a solid WR2 for him in many instances, and I’d try to do that. Emmanuel Sanders, or a Detroit wideout? Sounds good to me.”
