The third leg of the 2018 FedEx Cup Playoffs will take place at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania for the BMW Championship. The BMW Championship is open to the top 70 PGA Tour golfers following the Dell Technologies Championship. Only 70 players qualify for the event, therefore there is no cut after two days. FedEx Cup points amassed during the regular PGA Tour season and then during the two preceding playoff events determine the participants. The top 30 FedEx Cup points leaders following the BMW Championship advance to The Tour Championship, where the FedEx Cup Champion will be determined.

Storylines
Most of the storylines heading into this week’s tournament will focus on something else going on in the golf world: Ryder Cup captain selections. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau were all named as captain’s picks for the United States team, and rightfully so. DeChambeau has won the past two tournaments on the PGA Tour while the other two need no explanation as to why they were selected. There is no cut this weekend so every player will be playing deep into the weekend.
The Course
One of the bigger storylines this week will center around the golf course, Aronimink. It is a course that has not been featured on the PGA Tour since 2011, so a lot of players teeing it up this week will have no prior experience playing here. And even if some players have played here before, it has been touched up by designer Gil Hanse since that point. Hanse expanded the fairways by 20% and even expanded the greens to create better angles for the golfers. The course scores as a Par 70 and is relatively average in-length, stretching out to only 7,200 yards. Some of the Par 4’s are longer than Tour average but the Par 5’s register lower scoring averages than most. The course will likely be a test of the golfer’s entire bag; a good mix of long-irons and wedges. Almost every golfer says the same thing about the course, it’s a straight-forward course that gets easier as you play it more. Here is a quote from Ryan Moore regarding Aronimink:
“it’s just a good, straightforward golf course. There’s nothing too tricky about it, and I think I like that. You know, it’s just right there in front of you. There’s not too much trouble, too much hazards, stuff like that, just some fairways you have to favor one side or the other of it or else it’s going to run through into the rough. It gives you a chance to hit a good shot every hole, though. It’s not over-penalizing.”
Aronimink will host the 2027 PGA Championship.
Golfers to Target
Bryson DeChambeau $10,000
In my opinion, DeChambeau is vastly underpriced. He’s the hottest player in the world right now, coming off back-to-back victories in loaded tournaments. I think people forget just how talented DeChambeau was as an amateur and collegiate golfer. He was accomplishing things at a young age that only a handful of other golfers have ever accomplished. Is he quirky and occasionally smug? You could make that argument. But his talent on the course is undeniable. It took him a few years to warm up to playing on the PGA Tour but he has finally arrived. I would not be surprised if DeChambeau continues to be one of the world’s best for the next decade. He has the talent and work ethic to stay at the top now that he’s there.
C.T. Pan $6,900
Another one of the hottest golfers in the world right now. In his last four tournaments, Pan has carded four top 11 finishes including two top-five finishes. He hasn’t missed a cut since mid-June so that should tell you how well he’s playing. Obviously, there is no cut this week but ride the recent form here. The value is too hard to ignore given the price.
Kevin Kisner $7,300
Kisner is in consideration for the last Ryder Cup pick and will need to finish at least in the top 10 to close the distance between him and Tony Finau. I think he can. He’s made four out of his last five cuts and has played really well in tournaments with major implications surrounding them. I think we will see a motivated Kisner this week.
Jon Rahm $8,900
Rahm would have finished much better at the Dell Technologies Championship last week if he hadn’t dug himself such a hole on the first day of the tournament. He finished with three consecutive rounds under par to give himself a bit of momentum heading into this week. I just love the price more than anything. He is one of the best players in the world and he’s priced below $9,000. Gobble up this value and don’t look back.
Jordan Spieth $9,400
Three consecutive top-25 finishes for Spieth, so it’s not like his game is completely falling apart like this price-point may suggest. He is right on the cut-line to make it to next week’s Tour Championship so I’m expecting a more motivated version of Spieth. That typically does not fare well for his competitors.
