8 Takeaways from Week 6 Game Film (Fantasy Football)

Week 6 was bizarre with Brock Osweiler leading the Dolphins to a comeback win against Chicago while Latavius Murray racked up over 150 yards with Dalvin Cook out. Unfortunately, most of you weren’t able to see all the action, but don’t worry because I’ve got you covered. My week always starts by watching each and every play thanks to NFL Game Pass’ Condensed Game Film. While I watch, I’m jotting down all kinds of notes. Let me tell you about my top takeaways from the week.

#8) Peyton Barber isn’t ‘just a guy’
On the FantasyPros Football Podcast, my co-host, Mike Tagliere insists that Ronald Jones II was bound to take over the Tampa Bay running back job sooner than later because Barber is ‘just a guy’. While I didn’t disagree with him, the tape this week made up my mind for me. He isn’t Sony Michel or Kerryon Johnson, but Barber is elusive enough to become a quality NFL running back when combined with his vision and balance. The real issue is the offensive line, but on plays where Barber had a hole, he was every bit as good as your league-average starting running back. I’m convinced it will be at least a few weeks before the Bucs surrender this job to Jones.

#7) Tarik Cohen may be the fastest man in football
Why have we been deprived for so long of seeing more Tarik on the field? Jordan Howard is fine and sure, Cohen is too small to handle a big workload, but the Bears took too long to wake up and get this man the ball. Remember when Darren Sproles was zipping around everyone in New Orleans? Cohen is faster. Meanwhile, Sproles went for over 3,000 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns in three seasons because the Saints got the ball in his hands 420 times. Cohen is now on pace for a similar season with a season-long pace of 1,373 yards from scrimmage on 169 touches. We are looking at an every-week flex play from here on out.

#6) Deshaun Watson‘s decision-making is a nightmare
Texans fans may have ended up with a win Sunday, but I can guarantee they were all throwing up during that game. The offensive line was no help, but Watson needs to learn how to take a sack rather than tossing up floaters into triple coverage when he is under pressure. It may be even worse when he tries to keep his balance rather than going to the ground, because that ball comes loose much more easily in that situation as we saw multiple times Sunday. This isn’t to say Watson isn’t a franchise QB, but the Texans won’t be sniffing a Super Bowl until Watson’s game matures in this aspect of quarterbacking.

#5) Courtland Sutton may just be Alshon 2.0
It is a real shame that Demaryius Thomas is blocking Alshon. It isn’t as though Thomas is washed up as some might suggest. In fact, I’d argue he is still much more than just a competent wide receiver. The matter of the fact, however, is that Sutton is already better than even that. When you watch this rookie play, a younger Alshon Jeffery will immediately come to mind. His body control is tremendous and he high-points the ball up there with the best in football. If there were all, we’d be talking about a potential WR2, but Sutton’s agility is what will set him apart and move him into that Stefon Diggs and Mike Evans range of fantasy receivers as soon as next season.

#4) David Moore should be on waiver wire speed-dial
Moore is nowhere near as talented as Sutton, so let’s clear that one up right away. Still, these are very similar situations. Moore is a starting-caliber NFL receiver and we’ve known that since the preseason, but he is blocked by Doug Baldwin and Tyler Lockett. Baldwin is among the 15 best in football so there are no complaints there and Lockett has big-play ability, but there is no excuse for Brandon Marshall and Jaron Brown splitting snaps with Moore. If he were on the Indianapolis Colts, we’d be talking about an every week start, but Moore is stuck as an afterthought for a team throwing the ball just 24 times per game. Free David Moore!

#3) Michael Crabtree played one heck of a football game
When Crabtree came into the league, we all figured he would be the type of receiver who could dominate a game much like Chad Johnson or Marques Colston. That isn’t what we ended up with, but every once in a while, Crabtree will give us a flash performance reminding us that player lives inside of him. This isn’t to say Crabtree will continue making multiple exceptional plays every week, but there is certainly a chance that this was just the first of many strong games now that he is in the groove of the Baltimore offense. This may be the rare scenario where you can still buy a guy low even after a huge game.

#2) Few men on earth can do what Allen Robinson can
It was so long ago that it is just too easy to forget that Allen Robinson put up an 80 catch, 1,400 yard, 14 touchdown season as a 22-year-old with Blake Bortles throwing him the ball. This week was a wake-up call to the fact that Robinson may still be that superstar. He is just 14 months removed from his ACL tear too, so this is likely to be a situation where he continues to look better with each passing week. Remember, Robinson is just 25 years old still so another WR1 season or three is not out of the question. After watching his game film today, I’m fond of the idea that you can get yourself a true WR1 for the second half of the fantasy season for much cheaper than his real value.

#1) JuJu Smith-Schuster may be as good as Antonio Brown
I’ve been thinking this with each passing week, but haven’t been daring enough to actually write it for thousands of people to read. It is so true, though, that I won’t hold it back any longer. Brown is ridiculous and there is no denying that. I’m not saying he has lost a step or even that Brown isn’t the best receiver in football. What I am saying is that the 21-year-old JuJu is already playing at or very near that same level. I refused to draft JuJu this year and recommended against it because I couldn’t see any scenario where a second-fiddle could put up fringe WR1 numbers with an old Ben Roethlisberger throwing him passes. I stand by that process, but it is becoming obvious to me that I missed the fact that JuJu is capable enough that he doesn’t have to play second fiddle to Brown. Folks, we’ve got a special player on our hands and whichever QB takes over for Big Ben in a year or two could be throwing to two of the all-time great receivers.
