DraftKings NHL Lineup Advice: Tuesday (10/16)

DraftKings NHL Lineup Advice: Tuesday (10/16)

Eight games are scheduled this Tuesday evening. With the game transitioning to a faster, more offensive style of play, goals have not been hard to come by. The Vegas game lines have taken notice and increased the average total dramatically. In the eight games on tap, seven have a projected total of six goals scored or more. With that said, there is a lot to look at tonight for DFS purposes, so let’s dive in!

Center

Steven Stamkos (TB): $6,100 vs. CAR
Although he did not work out all that well last week, Stamkos is still mispriced. Now entering their third game of the season, the Tampa Bay Lightning will look to finally get into the swing of things and start playing quality hockey. The Carolina Hurricanes are off to a great start but are not nearly as skilled as the Lightning. Stamkos is coming off an 86-point season and is a true offensive snipper in today’s game. The power-play is set up to run through him, where the team can utilize his feared one-timer from the slot.  It is only a matter of time before the Lightning captain will be priced up in the elite tier of centers, so getting a jump on him now would be wise.

Bo Horvat (VAN): $5,700 @ PIT
News recently came out that the Canucks young star, Elias Pettersson, will be sidelined for seven to 10 days with a concussion. Other skilled players for the Cauncks are going to have to step up and find the offense needed for tonight’s matchup against one of the best teams in the NHL. Horvat has recorded four points in his first five games, where he plays on the Canucks top forward line and power-play unit. The Penguins are struggling to keep the puck out of the back of the net all season long and tonight will be no different. Pittsburgh will be without defenseman Justin Schultz who eats a lot of minutes per game and is a great skating D-man. This should give the speedy Vancouver forwards more time to set up the offense and score goals.

Wing

Nikita Kucherov (TB): $7,300 vs. CAR
Pairing Stamkos with Russian playmaker, Kucherov, is the best pairing for DFS in the NHL. Last year it was, anyway. With the affordability of Stamkos, he can certainly be used as a “one-off,” but the majority of his points will come through Kucherov, and we might as well double-dip on the fantasy points. For the majority of the 2018-19 season, Kucherov was the highest-priced winger and was consistently putting up multi-point games. The top line was involved in a couple of goals in their 8-2 thrashing of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Now, the team will look to get the stars involved as much as possible. This team goes as the top unit goes and it is vital for a deep playoff run that these guys put up points.

Sven Baertschi (VAN): $4,800 @ PIT
In a “high event” hockey game at a fast pace, plenty of goals will be had. This game has plenty of fantasy goodness on both sides, but the Canucks top line is where the value is. At less than $5,000, Canucks top left-winger, Baertschi is a great piece to a Canucks stack. He has scored five points in his last three games and is rolling with fellow linemates Horvat and Brock Boesser. Baertschi plays alongside Horvat on the Canucks top power-play unit, which gives him a bit of an edge over Boesser if you can only play two. However, all three should be considered in a stack against a defensively weak Penguins team, who have allowed four goals against, per game.

Phil Kessel (PIT): $7,000 vs. VAN
Bringing back a couple of Penguins on a Canucks stack makes sense in a game which should see the most goals scored this evening. Kessel is on fire right now. He scored seven points in the first four games, including a hat trick last Thursday. With the defensive liabilities the Penguins have shown, Pittsburgh has relied heavily on their offense to keep them in games. They have arguably the best power-play in the NHL which features the likes of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and of course, Kessel. The Canucks are still a relatively young team and not as disciplined when it comes to taking penalties. Averaging 11.4 minutes per game, Vancouver is on a long road trip and could find themselves playing sloppy against a very fast team. This will lead to a lot of man-advantage opportunities for the Penguins to score.

Defense

Kris Letang (PIT): $6,400 vs. VAN
One of the very best offensive defensemen in the league just became even more valuable for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Justin Schultz is out with a broken leg and will remain out of the lineup for at least four months. Schultz was a crucial offensive piece to the back end, where he led the second power-play unit and was a part of the second defensive pairing. Letang, who already averages 27 minutes of ice-time per game, will be leaned on even more. Letang is also averaging 6.1 DraftKings points per game and continues to be worth paying up for. He comes in as the most expensive defenseman but is hard to fade.

Sami Vatanen (NJ): $5,100 vs. DAL
The Devils will catch the Dallas Stars on their second game in as many nights in the midst of an East Coast road trip. New Jersey has played just three games this season, but the blue-liner is off to a great start. To start the season, Vatanen has recorded an assist in every game and has chipped in a lot of peripheral stats. He has scored 5.5 DraftKings points in the last two games, along with over  20 minutes of ice time. New Jersey is hoping to be a playoff bound team again this year, and Vatanen will be a big reason for their success.

Goalie

Connor Hellebuyck (WPG): $8,400 vs. EDM
Two things are going to work in favor of the Jets this evening. First, they are a much better team on home ice. They were last year and the same rings true so far this season as well. They are 3-2 on the season. All three wins came on home ice, while the two losses happened on the road. Second, the Edmonton Oilers look more like last year’s tea, than the 2016-17 season team. Yes, Connor McDavid is the best player in the NHL, and he is a threat to score every game, no question. However, having faith in the Jets’ defensive ability to shut down a disgruntled team seems logical. The Oilers have scored just five goals, all season, and McDavid has been apart of each one. There is no secondary scoring, and the Jets are simply a much better team. Hellebuyck is one of the safest goalies starting this evening for the win.
