Quarterbacks
Baker Mayfield (CLE) $7,200 @ PIT
Mayfield hasn’t exactly been lighting up scoreboards, but he has put up some good fantasy stats against some decent defenses — including the 18.98 FD points he had against the Raven a few weeks ago. This week he gets a good matchup with the Steelers that give up the fourth-most FanDuel points to QBs, and they rank 24th in DVOA against the TE position (per Footballoutsiders.com) which happens to be Mayfield’s favorite target in the passing game.
Running Backs
Jalen Richard (OAK) $5,600 vs IND
With Marshawn Lynch on IR, it opens the door for both Doug Martin and Richard, however, I think Richard has the better chance to be successful this week. The Colts have scored at least 34 points in three of their last four games, and they will able to put up points on this bad Raiders defense, meaning the Raiders offense will be forced to pass to keep up. The passing game is where Richard excels and with Derek Carr turning into a “check-down” QB, Richard could end up with double-digit targets and a receiving TD.
Raheem Mostert (SF) $5,600 @ ARI
With RB Matt Breida banged up and Alfred Morris ineffective, Mostert has stepped up as a viable option in this decimated 49ers offense. This week he gets a dream matchup up against an Arizona team that gives up 31.73 FanDuel points to RBs — dead last in the league. Mostert will be a risky pick if Brieda suits up, but he is still worth a shot as a cheap GPP option.
Trenton Cannon (NYJ) $5,200 @ CHI
Bilal Powell is on IR with a potentially career-ending neck injury, Elijah McGuire is not available to return until Week 10, and Isaiah Crowell is not used much in the passing game, which leaves Cannon as the sure-fire third-down back — at least for this game. The Bears are a tough defense, but we saw Patriots receiving back, James White, have a career day against them last week. The Jets aren’t the Patriots and Cannon isn’t James White, but at $5,200, he is worth a shot in a GPP.
Wide Receivers
Taylor Gabriel (CHI) $5,500 vs NYJ
Both Gabriel and fellow WR Allen Robinson had quiet days last week against the Patriots with RB Tarik Cohen and TE Trey Burton getting a good portion of the targets. Allen Robinson has been limited to start the week an may be dealing with a groin injury that could keep him out of this game. Whether Robinson plays or not, I love Gabriel in this matchup as the Jets secondary is giving up over 36 FanDuel points per game — seventh worst in the league.
Martavis Bryant (OAK) $5,300 vs IND
I thought I had written up Byrant for the last time in this column after he was released by the Raiders, and even after he was re-signed I didn’t think he would ever be fantasy relevant again. Then Amari Cooper gets traded, leaving Jordy Nelson and Byrant as the top two WRs on the team. Byrant is a shot in the dark GPP play, and you will need him to make one big play to pay off his salary, but he is capable of it — especially against a susceptible Colts’ secondary that ranks 21st DVOA (per Footballoutsiders.com) against the pass.
Tight Ends
Vance McDonald (PIT) $5,300 vs CLE
Over the last four weeks, only five teams have given up more FanDuel points to TEs than have the Browns. They have given up 13.80 FanDuel points over that span, including a five-catch 67-yard effort by Bucs TE O.J. Howard last week.
