FanDuel PGA Recommended Plays: HSBC Champions

The fall portion of the PGA Tour schedule continues this week as the next tournament on the docket is the HSBC Champions event in Shanghai, China. It’s a 78-man field with no cut line and starts on Wednesday afternoon rather than the traditional Thursday start.

Storylines

It is a loaded field for a fall event on the PGA Tour. A lot of big names have taken the trip to China to compete here, which is not something we see very often at this point in the schedule. Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Jason Day, Tommy Fleetwood and Hideki Matsuyama are the headliners, which is A LOT of headlining talent for an event of this stature. There are plenty of other top 25 ranked golfers in this event as well. If this tournament was rescheduled to the middle of the season, it would instantly grade out as one of the stronger fields of the PGA Tour season. With all of the focus on NBA and NFL, now is as good of a time as ever to dive into PGA DFS.

Golfers to Target

Tony Finau $10,800
An absolute monster when it comes to scoring on Par 5s, Finau had as good of a year as almost anyone on the PGA Tour last season. With the plethora of talent in this field, I don’t see the need to pay up for any of the $11,500k+ golfers. He finished T10 at an event in Europe two weeks ago and has finished inside the top 1o in five of his last six starts. He finished T11 at this event last year, which means he’s comfortable navigating this course.

Francesco Molinari $11,300
Molinari might be higher owned than usual given how dominant he was in the Ryder Cup. I’m hoping some of the top-flight golfers above him demand the majority of the ownership, but it’s never a guarantee. But the main reason I like Molinari this week is that he’s supremely accurate off-the-tee which is needed on this course due to the thick rough surrounding the fairways.

Keegan Bradley $9,400
Keegan is a golfer that I feel is perpetually underrated week-to-week. He is a top-five ball striker on Tour, which gives him a higher floor than a lot of other golfers in a given week. If he can get hot with his putter, which is a big question mark for him, he is almost guaranteed to finish near the top of the leaderboard given the level of consistency he’s shown with his irons.

Thorbjorn Olesen $8,900
Olesen expanded his clout with an appearance at the Ryder Cup, but that is not the reason I like him this week. He’s very accurate off-the-tee which is a critical component of scoring well at this course. And given his talent level, I feel that $8,900 is a very reasonable price.

Cameron Smith $9,800
Smith has started the 2018 PGA Tour season with two consecutive top-25 finishes, including a seventh-place finish last weekend in South Korea. And his price point allows for higher-spending on some of the top flight players in this event.
