Dynasty Waiver Wire: Week 10 (Fantasy Football)

Dynasty Waiver Wire: Week 10 (Fantasy Football)

Levi Chappell discusses which players you should consider grabbing from your dynasty league’s waiver wire.

I love fantasy football. I also hate fantasy football. I had San Francisco’s defense locked into my starting lineup, but then I hear that the 49ers will be starting someone named Nick Mullens. I had to ask myself…what is a Nick Mullens? So, of course, I drop the 49ers defense to pick up Oakland’s defense, and the rest is history. An undrafted free agent making his first career start on short notice shreds the Raiders defense en route to negative fantasy points, while the 49ers post a very solid game and I am left questioning everything I knew or thought I knew about fantasy football.

So why should you care about the idiotic moves that I have made as a fantasy owner? Because hopefully I have made enough terrible moves for all of us and you can learn from me what not to do. But even as great of an owner that you are, I am sure that you have made some moves that haunt you in your sleep and make you wish you could go back in time. But guess what? You can’t. The only thing we can do is move on and try and improve your team each and every day.

As trade deadlines are starting to approach for some fantasy leagues, the waiver wire becomes more and more valuable. Whether you are adding to a deeper bench, trying to fill in for injuries, or adding anyone of significance because your team is so ugly that it fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down, all are valid reasons to add some of these players listed below to your team.

Some of the names that I will be listing below and in future articles will already be owned in your league. If you are in a 10-team league, many of these players may be available, but if you are in a 12- or 14-team league, fewer may be available. For the most part, I will be listing players that are owned in less than 40% of 12-team leagues.

Nick Mullens (QB – SF)
Let’s just start it off with the guy who took the football world by storm. I try not to overreact after just one game, but…he looked much better than C.J. Beathard has. Mullen’s poise in the pocket was very impressive for such a young guy with little experience. I have to think that Mullens will be the starter for the remainder of the season unless something unforeseen happens. If you are in a league where the waiver wire is really thin on QBs, Mullens may be a guy that you want to target.

Equanimeous St. Brown (WR – GB)
This is a guy that may already be owned in deeper leagues, but St. Brown has shown in limited time that he can make some big plays and contribute to the offense. Obviously Marquez Valdes-Scantling is already gone (and looking like a future star) and that window has passed, but the Packers seem confident enough to roll with Davante Adams and the two rookies moving forward. Cobb will most likely be gone next year, and it looks like Geronimo Allison may be done for quite a bit of this season with an injury that will give St. Brown a real shot at significant playing time. The WR3 on an Aaron Rodgers-led offense will always carry some fantasy value.

Adam Humphries (WR – TB)
Humphries is quietly putting together a very good season. While DeSean Jackson was getting a lot of hype at the beginning of the season, Mike Evans is putting up good numbers (except for this week), Chris Godwin is looking like a breakout candidate, and O.J. Howard looks like a stud, Humphries is quietly on pace for 100 targets, 70 catches, over 750 yards, and four scores. Unfortunately, he is the fourth or fifth option on his team, but if you are in dire need of a WR, Humphries’ floor seems to be decently high.

Jeff Heuerman (TE – DEN)
We have been waiting all year for a tight end to emerge in Denver; we just had no idea who it would be. As of right now, it looks like Heuerman may be the guy. While everyone thought that Courtland Sutton would be the biggest beneficiary from the Demaryius Thomas trade, through one week it has been Heuerman. In a year where the tight end position has been decimated by injuries and is in need of solid production, Heuerman could not have surfaced at a better time. 11 targets and 10 catches makes me think that he may be more than just a touchdown-dependent option. He could very well emerge as the third option in the Broncos’ system.

Jordan Thomas (TE – HOU)
Speaking of touchdown dependent tight ends, Thomas fits that mold. He only has 36 yards in the past two games, but has taken full advantage of his opportunities with three scores in those two games. Thomas is not a guy that you want to rely on week-to-week, but could be an option as an injury or bye-week fill in.

Curtis Samuel (WR – CAR)
Samuel is a guy that was a trendy rookie pick when he was coming out of Ohio State. The Panthers have struggled to find a way to use his talents and get him onto the field, but this season he has flashed explosiveness that could benefit the offense. He still sees very few touches per game, but he turned three touches into two touchdowns this past weekend. The Panthers will have no choice but to find room for him on the field, and once he starts getting some significant playing time, he could make a real fantasy impact.
