Fantasy Football Risers and Fallers: Week 10

Fantasy Football Risers and Fallers: Week 10

This football weekend we saw Kareem Hunt and Alvin Kamara score three touchdowns apiece, Demaryius Thomas play against the Broncos five days after being traded, and Nick Mullens trounce the Oakland Raiders for three touchdowns and 34 points in his first career start. Here are my risers and fallers after a wild Week 9.

Risers

Keenan Allen (WR – LAC)
There may have been some uncertainty as to Keenan Allen’s place on the food chain in Los Angeles, but let this game set the record straight — Keenan Allen is the guy there. He didn’t score a touchdown in this one, but he occupied 38% of Philip Rivers’ attention despite him throwing passes to six other players. Allen had six more targets and four more catches than any other Charger. Allen should have a second-half resurgence similar to what we saw last year.

Duke Johnson (RB – CLE)
Finally, Duke Johnson has been freed. In the first game since the firing of Hugh Jackson and Todd Haley, Johnson racked up a season-high in targets (9), receptions (9), and receiving yards (78), as well as scoring his first two touchdowns of the season. Baker Mayfield looked Johnson’s way more than any other pass catcher. Hopefully, this is a trend that continues.

Dalvin Cook (RB – MIN)
Seeing Dalvin Cook break that that 70-yard run almost brought tears to my eyes on Sunday. He appears to have regained his speed and explosiveness and was just a shoestring tackle away from taking that run in for six. We could see another game or two where he and Latavius Murray split the workload, but his value is certainly on the rise. When both are healthy, Cook is far and away the better talent, and he should be hitting his stride right around fantasy playoff time.

Greg Olsen (TE – CAR)
Greg Olsen is really back now. Despite all the playmakers on Carolina’s squad, Cam Newton has found Olsen in the end zone in three straight games. Newton has always gone to Olsen in the red zone and it appears they are finding that connection again. Tight ends are extremely hard to come by this season, so it’s nice to see a guy like Olsen producing consistently.

Ben Roethlisberger (QB – PIT)
On the road in Baltimore is about the worst possible matchup for Big Ben Roethlisberger. Since 2010, Roethlisberger has averaged only 244 passings yards there and has thrown six touchdowns compared to nine interceptions over seven games. Against all odds, Roethlisberger threw two touchdowns, no interceptions, and ran one in on his way to finishing as the QB7 for Week 9. For most of his career, Roethlisberger has been unstartable for fantasy when he plays on the road, but he’s managed to shake that reputation off slightly over the last two years. If he can get it done in Baltimore, he can get it done anywhere.

Fallers

Lamar Miller (RB – HOU)
After two straight weeks of 100+ yards and a touchdown, Lamar Miller gets out carried 15-12 to by Alfred Blue. no one is sure what is going on in that backfield, but it appears Miller is just as risky and volatile as he was before his two-game outburst. D’Onta Foreman is also nearing a return which will only make this less clear for Miller owners.

Mark Ingram (RB – NO)
It was nice for the Saints to give Mark Ingram a welcome back game in Week 5, but this is clearly Alvin Kamara’s backfield. Kamara has had the same or more carries and targets than Ingram in all three of their games since his first game back and also has six touchdowns compared to Ingram’s zero. Ingram is a solid running back, but Kamara is a top-three running back in the league and is a bigger and better playmaker. That talent is winning him more opportunities.

Stefon Diggs (WR – MIN)
Stefon Diggs has proven throughout his career that he needs to be healthy to be effective on the field. In an illuminating tweet, Scott Barrett pointed out that in the five games he’s been active for while being on the injury report, Diggs has scored only one touchdown and never topped 59 yards. Hopefully, the rib injury won’t linger, but his value takes a big hit if he tries to play through it.

Kerryon Johnson (RB – DET)
Kerryon Johnson has been all over the place this season, but if you sold high on him in the last couple weeks, you probably won that deal. With LeGarrette Blount and Theo Riddick both playing, there just isn’t enough opportunity for Johnson to be a consistent contributor. The Lions are almost always playing from behind now which requires a lot more passing, and on Sunday, Riddick was in on 29 passing snaps compared to Johnson’s 19.

Courtland Sutton (WR – DEN)
We were all expecting a huge uptick in opportunity for Courtland Sutton with the departure of Demaryius Thomas, and while he did play 85% of the Broncos offensive snaps, he only received an underwhelming five targets. Instead, Jeff Heuerman stepped up big, pulling in 10 of his 11 targets for 83 yards and a touchdown. Sutton should still be more involved as a starting wide receiver, but we may have to temper our expectations a bit.
