Fantasy Basketball Buy & Sell: Week 11

Fantasy Basketball Buy & Sell: Week 11

Hot streaks can sway a fantasy basketball league. It is the nature of sports for players to have a run of games where they play above their statistical mean. It usually evens out with a cold spell over the long season.

No players have been hotter than James Harden and Paul George in December. Harden has taken full advantage of the absence of Chris Paul by averaging 34.8 points per game with 7.8 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 4.7 three-pointers made, 1.8 steals, and 45.4 percent shooting from the field and 88.3 percent on his free throws. He will likely be the top player in fantasy this season, so hold him and enjoy the ride.

Paul George, on the other hand, is benefitting from some hot shooting to inflate his numbers. He has played 12 games in December. George is averaging 31.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 3.8 three-pointers made, 2.3 steals, and 50.6 percent shooting from the field and 85.9 percent on his free throws. That is a plethora of unsustainable production from the wing.

George had an ADP of 18 this season, and that was too low. Managers should be smart here and try to sell him. He is producing top-10 value and owners can likely trade him away for Damian Lillard or Nikola Jokic to secure additional season-long value. Let us take a look at four others that fantasy players should take a look at moving in trades.

Buy

Here is a peek at two players that fantasy managers should be trying to acquire in a trade to boost their place in the standings.

Karl-Anthony Towns (C – MIN)
Towns is a perennial top-10 fantasy option so acquiring him is going to cost a significant price. Now is the time to make the move, though. KAT is averaging 20.9 points per game on the season, which is lower than the two previous years. Now consider that he is shooting 1.2 field goal attempts more this season. 1.1 of those shots are threes. Towns is also shooting below his career averages from both the field and three-point line.

Expect him to take a step forward in the coming weeks. Jimmy Butler’s exit should only create more field goal attempts for Towns as the season progresses. He could get closer to the 25.1 points per game he averaged before Butler came to town.

Expect Towns to be a top-five fantasy option for the rest of the season. Managers may be able to trade a George, Joel Embiid, or Kyrie Irving to acquire Towns at this time. That would be a wise move.

Donovan Mitchell (PG/SG – UTA)
Mitchell is on the opposite end of the streaks as Harden and George. In his 12 December games, the second-year guard is averaging 18.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.9 3-pointers, and 1.6 steals on 36.6 percent shooting from the field and 76.0 percent on his free throws.

Mitchell shot 43.7 percent from the field as a rookie and 34.0 percent on three-pointers. This season those numbers sit at 40.7 percent and 29.1 percent. He is also averaging 1.2 more field goal attempts in year two.

Mitchell could be in line to take a step forward during the rest of the season. He likely averages 23 points per game. Now, Mitchell was a tad overdrafted with an ADP of 21, but maybe his owner has soured slightly after a slow start. Acquire him for any player outside the top 30 and enjoy the ride with Mitchell.

Sell

Here is a glimpse at two players fantasy managers should attempt to trade away because their value has reached its peak.

Bradley Beal (SG – WAS)
Beal is also on a tear in the month of December. He is averaging 27.0 points per game with 6.0 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 2.4 3-pointers made, and 0.9 steals while hitting 48.8 percent of his field goal attempts. Beal has shot over 46 percent for two straight seasons, but he likely averages more in the 23 points range.

He is also performing over his head in the rebounds, assists, and three-pointers made. The stellar play was in part to John Wall dealing with some minor injuries forcing a larger burden on Beal’s shoulders including averaging 39.3 minutes per game in December. Trade away Beal for any top-20 talent and enjoy winning another trade for your fantasy squad.

Buddy Hield (SG – SAC)
Hield has taken a massive step forward this season. He is averaging 20.4 points per game. Hield’s previous career-high was 13.5. The increase in minutes has also helped him improve all of his counting stats.

Hield had an ADP of 110, and he is well outperforming that. He has been a top-60 player on the year. Managers should want to sell high now, though.

Hield is shooting 47.9 percent from the field. He is a career 44.7 percent shooter. The third-year guard also struggles to produce defensive stats. Hield averages 1.0 steal and 0.3 blocks per-36 minutes for his career. That means he is unlikely to help managers in either category.

That makes Hield a positive in points and three-pointers made with sturdy percentages to boot. The fantastic news about that is they are often the easiest producers to get other managers to buy extremely high on. Consider Hield’s production likely takes a downturn the rest of the year, sell him now for any player inside the top-75 and enjoy maximizing the value of the Kings guard.
