Takeaways from Week 15 Game Film (Fantasy Football)

Week 15 was the worst of all time. That is unless you survived the utter desolation. Chances are, you saw the boxscores and maybe even highlights of Kenny Golladay and DeAndre Hopkins looking like superstars, but missed some of the details that could help you fantasy-wise this season and next. Today, I’ll tell you the biggest takeaways from what I saw on this week’s tape that you likely didn’t see in this week’s highlights.

#5) Dante Pettis is a route-running technician
We’ve been saying this since before the NFL draft and it should have been no surprise that Kyle Shanahan drafted him before he was expected to be taken. It took a while for Pettis to get on the field for San Francisco, but now that he has, you’ll see why Pettis was said to be the eventual replacement for Pierre Garcon, who once led the league with 113 receptions. Once Jimmy G is back in town, you could see a scenario where Pettis becomes an annual 90 reception receiver like Golden Tate who consistently returns fourth-round value.

#4) Jamaal Williams has to be the worst ball carrier in the league
This is in no way discouraging fantasy owners from picking Williams up this week. He is almost certain to get 15 touches and could see as much as 25 with Aaron Jones now out. Remember, he was a top 10 fantasy running back when he started under similar conditions last season and this despite his awful running. Every single time Williams tries to make a cut, the defensive players see it from a mile away then Williams moves laterally about 2 inches before going down on first contact. There is nothing more certain in the NFL. The only way Williams is breaking a 20-yard run is if the Packers’ offensive line opens up an enormous hole for him.

#3) Robert Foster is going to be fantasy relevant for a long time
You may have never heard of him, but that doesn’t mean the month’s breakout player isn’t a baller. The 4.41 running former Alabama recruit is talented and extremely impressive on film. Don’t hear me wrong, he isn’t a dominator like Kenny Golladay or Corey Davis, but he can be much like Tyler Boyd from this year and Robert Woods last year. Foster is just instinctually aware of the seams in a defense and has the timing to run into them much like Doug Baldwin has done for Seattle over the years. He is fast enough to break a big play here and there too. With continued targets in Buffalo, Foster can be a top 36 weekly starter in fantasy leagues next year.

#2) Nick Foles looks astronomically better than he did in Week 1
This is not me saying that the Eagles are going to win the Super Bowl with Foles. They’ve got a long way to go for that to even be realistic, but I do believe Foles to be significantly better than I did going into the week. To start the season, Foles was abysmal. I thought he should have retired on the spot after going 19 for 34 with 137 yards and no touchdowns against the Falcons in Week 1, but it turns out that he had been playing injured. Now that Foles is healthy again, he can be competent enough to potentially help Philly squeeze into the playoffs over the Vikings with wins at home over Houston and in Washington.

#1) *Special Rewind* John Kelly is an incredible running back
Notice, this did not say incredible back up running back, it just said running back. Now, I’ve got to go back to the preseason for most of the game tape, but if Kelly were drafted by a team like the Jets or Jaguars, we’d have seen him starting for months by now, but the rookie out of Tennessee has been stuck behind Todd Gurley and even Malcolm Brown. That doesn’t mean he can’t be a special player though, because he is, just like Alvin Kamara was before Adrian Peterson went away and Kareem Hunt was before Spencer Ware went down for the year. Kelly looked sensational in the preseason, akin to Brian Westbrook. In this offense, with a huge workload and a perfect matchup versus the Cardinals, it wouldn’t surprise me if we get a Jonas Gray type of game out of him this week if Gurley sits.
