AAF Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 8

AAF Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 8

If you are in season-long leagues, this is likely your last week of regular season play in AAF fantasy football which means these players could be some of your last waiver grabs of the year. Week 7 of the AAF didn’t really give us any huge, out of nowhere, breakout performances like we have seen frequently in this league. We did see some players who have been continuing to trend up over the last few weeks make some noise in Week 7, and those players are our primary focus when looking over the waiver wire heading into Week 8.

As always with AAF articles, stats and fantasy points are sourced thanks to Fanball (DFS), No Extra Points, and The Football Database.

Quarterback

Brandon Silvers (MEM)
As we are winding down toward the end of regular season play, you aren’t going to have much luck in season-long leagues grabbing a QB off the waiver wire. Brandon Silvers may still be there, though, as he entered Week 7 amidst plenty of quarterback controversy with Johnny Manziel lurking in the background. While Manziel did see his regular season debut briefly in Week 7, Silvers played well enough to keep the starting job for now at least.

Silvers and the Express upset the Iron in a wild one where we saw a game end in overtime for the first time all season. He finished completing 24-of-35 attempts for 266 yards, two TDs, and two 2PT conversions. Memphis is playing the role of a spoiler at this point in the season but are proving that there is still plenty of fight in them. Silvers gives you matchup-based starter potential in season-long leagues, though I still wouldn’t trust him in DFS as he will likely remain on a short leash.

Running Back

Terrell Watson (SD)
There weren’t really any big surprise performances from running backs in Week 7, but there were two players who have continued to trend upward over the last few weeks. Terrell Watson has basically been the lead back for San Diego over the last few weeks and has turned in solid fantasy performances in back-to-back games. While Watson trailed Bishop Sankey slightly in rushing in Week 7, it was Watson who found the end zone and finished the week as the overall RB3 in fantasy with 17.3 points.

Watson has now scored three times over the last two weeks as he has carved out a versatile role both as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. It sounded like the team wants to get Sankey going more, but Watson continues to be a mainstay on this offense and the most steady RB on the roster. If Watson is still hanging around your waiver wire, he is a must-grab this week as coach Mike Martz also mentioned that Ja’Quan Gardner may be out for a bit with an injured shoulder.

Trey Williams (SA)
The Salt Lake run defense was no joke in Week 7 as it remains one of the toughest in the league. SLC held San Antonio to only 64 total rushing yards last week with Trey Williams leading the team with 19 yards. Luckily for Williams, he has some decent chops in the passing game and took a reception 36 yards to the house. Williams continues to fight Kenneth Farrow for carries in this backfield, but Williams has proven a much more efficient runner this season. He has managed 5.1 YPC on the season compared to only a 3.6 YPC mark for Farrow.

San Antonio is continuing its push for a playoff spot and should see much higher-scoring games with matchups against Arizona and Memphis on deck. Williams continues to be a decent flex option and DFS value play who usually sits around the mid-$4k price range on Fanball. If anything happened to Farrow over the next week or two, Williams could turn into a league-winner in the first year of AAF fantasy playoffs.

Wide Receiver

Daniel Williams (MEM)
Daniel Williams finds himself as a top waiver add for the second week in a row. Williams showed that his Week 6 seven-catch, 70-yard effort was no fluke as he responded last week by finding the end zone. His five catches for 30 yards weren’t quite as impressive, but he saw nine targets in the game which tied Reece Horn for the team lead. Williams has clearly carved out a solid role quickly as this team’s best option as the WR2. At 6’3″ and 200 lbs, Williams will be a friendly target to close out the year no matter which Memphis QB winds up leading the team through the home stretch. If Williams slid under the radar in your season-long league last week, he should be a top add this week and will be an interesting DFS play as Memphis could be coaxed into a shootout with Orlando in Week 8.

Malachi Jones (ATL)
The Atlanta offense has been completely muted the last two weeks as they’ve only managed to score six points in each game. Last week, those points came thanks to wideout Malachi Jones who led the team with six catches for 53 yards and one TD. Malachi and Seantavius Jones have been working well in tandem together as more of a WR1A and 1B relationship as opposed to the bigger dropoffs you usually see between a team’s WR1 and WR2. Malachi Jones has had the edge, though, this season with two TDs on the year while Seantavius hasn’t found the end zone just yet. Atlanta is in a decent spot to get right this week against a struggling Birmingham Iron team that just got upset by another sub .500 team, the Memphis Express. If Malachi Jones is on your league’s waiver wire, he is worth an add as a potential flex play on an offense that has shown much more capable than the last two games would lead you to believe.

Tight End

Marcus Baugh (SD)
After putting up a goose egg in Week 6, Marcus Baugh bounced back last week making his only catch count for a 38-yard TD. Baugh continues to work as a solid downfield threat as a tight end and could potentially see more work going forward in that department if Dontez Ford remains sidelined a while longer. Baugh has either scored a TD or at least seen a red zone target in each of his last four games, so the opportunity is there and his value per target remains higher than that of your average TE. I’m still not messing with the position at all in DFS, but Baugh is a solid pickup in season-long leagues with weekly top-three upside.

Evan Rodriguez (SA)
Evan Rodriguez had his best game of the season last week as he caught three passes for a season-high 71 yards. This comes on the heels of a Week 6 performance that saw Rodriguez grab his second TD of the season. He only finished 1.3 fantasy points behind overall TE1 Nick Truesdell last week and was also the overall TE3 the week prior. San Antonio’s offense should generally remain funneled through Mekale McKay, but Rodriguez has shown over the last two weeks that he has a comfortable role here as well as we keep getting extremely inconsistent performances from wideouts Greg Ward Jr., De’Marcus Ayers, and Alonzo Moore. Rodriguez gives you top-three upside at the tight end position in season-long leagues and could still be out there on your waiver wire.
