Dynasty Players to Sell Post-Free Agency (2019 Fantasy Football)

Dynasty Players to Sell Post-Free Agency (2019 Fantasy Football)

The NFL season truly never sleeps. A few more free-agent signings trickled in this week, but Rob Gronkowski’s retirement dominated the headlines. Fans have seen the majority of offseason player movement, and that is what brings us here today.

Let’s look at six players dynasty managers should attempt to sell after free agency because their value will likely never be higher than it is at this moment.

Jarvis Landry (WR – CLE)
Landry is coming off his third 1,000-yard season in the last four years. His team’s top target each season, Landry produced 976 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 149 targets last year.

Those numbers, however, will almost certainly drop with Cleveland adding Odell Beckham Jr. In his four fully healthy seasons, OBJ has averaged 145.25 targets per year.

Teammates Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster both finished in the top-five in targets last season. Yet the Steelers led the NFL with 689 pass attempts, and the Browns were 11th with 574. They would have to rely on Baker Mayfield to pass a lot more this season, but it does not seem wise to give a second-year QB that many attempts.

The Browns also have plenty of other weapons from TE David Njoku to RB Nick Chubb. They will both be active and get opportunities.

Landry cannot rely on touchdowns to save him; he averages just over five per year. Expect his targets to drop a bit, decreasing his receiving yards closer to 900 than 1,000 in 2019. Sell him now to a manager excited about Cleveland’s potential and reap the rewards.

DeSean Jackson (WR – PHI)
Jackson was traded back to the Eagles, where he played his first six seasons with five 1,000-yard campaigns to show for it. He was a fantasy stud a few of those years, but I’m worried about his production heading into 2019.

After tallying just 706 total yards in 2017, Jackson had 803 last season. He has scored no more than five touchdowns in four straight years. That’s a negative trend for a player who turns 33 in December.

This could be your last chance to trade Jackson — who has a consensus Fantasy Pros Ranking of 147 — and accrue some value in dynasty leagues. He’s a deep-ball threat, and as the speed fades with age, so will his production.

Cole Beasley (WR – BUF)
Bills QB Josh Allen had the NFL’s worst completion percentage last season. His 52.8 percentage was a full 21 percent below league leader Drew Brees and the worst rate since Brandon Weeden posted the same mark in 2013.

Cole Beasley is an incredibly durable player who has missed just one game in the last five seasons. The problem: It hasn’t led to impressive stats for fantasy managers. His career high is 840 receiving yards (next highest is 672), and Beasley has never topped five touchdowns in a single season.

Poor QB play plus middling performance equals a stay-away for this fantasy manager in 2019 drafts. He is ranked is 256th, but give me an upside shot on a young RB or WR. Beasley, who turns 30 in April, won’t take a massive leap forward on the Bills.

Adam Humphries (WR – TEN)
Coming off the best season of his career, Humphries produced 827 total yards and five touchdowns. The former Bucs wideout’s previous career high was two touchdowns in a season.

Now he moves to Tennessee to be the Titans’ number one option. Humphries turns 26 in June, but the targets are a bit worrisome. The Titans were 31st with 437 pass attempts last season. He has never produced over 850 yards in a season, and his touchdowns are likely to regress, making him a risky target.

Humphries is ranked 123 at the moment, and that is too high. He’s not the answer to your fantasy problems. If Humphries is on your dynasty roster, trade him using the angle that he is now the Titans’ top receiver.

Derek Carr (QB – OAK)
Carr got a new weapon this offseason in perennial first-round pick Antonio Brown. He is also coming off his first 4,000-yard season. Fantasy managers may thus get excited about his outlook.

However, Carr finished 18th in fantasy points among QBs last season. The previous season, he was 19th. At age 27, he is not going to suddenly vault into the top 10.

Fantasy managers should wait on quarterbacks in re-draft leagues. In dynasty, trade him away for a young RB or WR who does not look in line for much playing time this season.

Nick Foles (QB – JAC)
The same goes for Foles. He finally got paid and will start for the Jaguars, but he’s not a fantasy stud. Prorating his career numbers to a 16-game season is a bit scary; Foles would average 3,308 yards passing with 20 touchdowns and 9.8 interceptions.

Fantasy managers should avoid Foles and not acquire him in dynasty. If you have him, trade for nearly anyone unless it is a two-QB league.
