FanDuel NHL Lineup Advice: Wednesday (3/13)

Hopefully, you were able to catch yesterday’s article and cash in on the Calgary Flames. Johnny Gaudreau had himself a historic night, scoring three goals and adding another three assists for six points against the New Jersey Devils on route to a 9-4 win.

The Devils will travel three hours north to Edmonton where they will take on a hot Oilers team, which is one of just three games on this evenings slate. Even though it is quiet tonight in the NHL, it is tough to take the night off with such a clear path for lineup construction. Of the six teams taking action, only two teams deserve heavy consideration and a case can be made for a third. Let’s break these teams down in more detail and find some of the best DFS options on a small slate.

Center

Connor McDavid (EDM): $9,200 vs. NJ
After watching New Jersey last night, it was very apparent that injuries have decimated this team. There are seven players listed on the injury report, which has thinned out the depth and quality of this team. Just one year removed from the playoffs, the Devils find themselves as a bottom-five team in the NHL standings in 2018-19. Connor McDavid has recorded the second-most points in the NHL this year (98) and will look to lead his desperate team into a “must-win” scenario against a team who was just embarrassed last night. Edmonton has won five of their last six games and find themselves just out of a playoff spot. There is no current player on the Devils who will be able to slow down McDavid tonight. While we cannot expect a six-point performance, the Oilers captain is in line for another multi-point game.

Auston Matthews (TOR): $7,900 vs. CHI
It is always tough to predict which Maple Leaf line will score the most points, but Matthews is always a threat to score. Now with 31 goals in 55 games, Matthews has quickly evolved into one of the games top goal scorers. Chicago will travel to Toronto tonight and enter this game leading the league (by a wide margin) in High Danger Chances Against (HDCA). The Blackhawks have allowed a lot of high-quality scoring chances which have translated into allowing the second-most goals against. Matthews is a top option to score tonight in a great matchup.

Wing

Leon Draisaitl (EDM): $8,600 vs. NJ
Oilers coach, Ken Hitchcock, can be frustrating to deal with for line combinations. He will shuffle players up and down lines all game long. Leon Draisaitl has played with Connor McDavid on the wing, while also centering his own second line through the season. Considering last game the two played together and this game is so important in the standings, I believe the two will play alongside each other, which makes this duo one of the best in the league. A lot of hockey fans who do not know much about the Oilers would be shocked to see Leon Draisaitl’s name behind only Alex Ovechkin as the NHL’s leading goal scorers. Scoring his 42nd goal against New York Monday evening, Draisaitl is planting his foot into superstar status. Against one of the weakest teams in the league, Drasaitl and the Oilers are a great team stack.

William Nylander (TOR): $4,700 vs. CHI
It looks as though Nylander will slot in next to Auston Matthews tonight. Unfortunately, Nylander is having a down season after sitting out half the year due to contract negotiations. Hoping to get hot before the playoffs, we should expect offensive success with Matthews. A very talented, young player, Nylander provides salary relief with plenty of fantasy upside. On a night were studs need to find a lineup, the young Swedish player is a very good option.

Zack Kassian (EDM): $4,500 vs. NJ
Because Kassian is playing with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, he should be rostered. The fact that he is just $4,500 proves that he needs to be in every lineup. In addition, Kassian is very hot. With five points in his last six games (including a four-game goal streak), the veteran has played very well and been rewarded.

Defense

Alexander Edler (VAN): $4,700 vs. NYR
The one game which should be avoided is on the west coast. Vancouver is hosting the Rangers in a game which should not see a lot of fantasy relevance. That being said, Alexander Edler is worth considering in all formats due to the important role he plays for his team. Edler averages 24 minutes of ice time per night and 13 FanDuel points. While playing on special teams and even-strength, Edler generates points, shots, and blocked shots every night. He has a high floor, with plenty of opportunity for a high ceiling as well.

Andrej Sekera (EDM): $3,500 vs. NJ
Sekera is a very talented defenseman who has not gained a lot of traction due to injuries. Missing half of 2018-19, Sekera also sat out all of the 2017-18 season. He is a terrific skater who jumps up in the play, looking to score every shift. Teammate Oscar Klefbom blocked a shot last game and is listed as DTD which will open ice time for Sekera against the Devils. As mentioned above, the Oilers should score at will against New Jersey, leaving all players worth a look.

Goalie

Mikko Koskinen (EDM): $8,000 vs. NJ
Part of the recent Oilers success has been due to the great play of goaltender, Mikko Koskinen. Although there was drama earlier in the season, Koskinen cleary now has secured the starting position. Koskinen has won his last five games in a row, allowing just nine goals. With few teams playing on this slate, there are not a lot of elite options to chose from. However, playing at home, Koskinen is in the best situation to score the most fantasy points.
