Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Mike Clevinger, David Dahl, Rougned Odor
Welcome to the Week 3 edition of the Fantasy Baseball Injury Report. Big injury news comes from Cleveland this week, where Mike Clevinger is being shut down for six-to-eight weeks after an upper back strain. The injury occurred on April 7, when he left after five innings with back discomfort. The official injury is a teres major strain in his right shoulder joint. Surgery is an option, but the Indians would prefer to avoid it if possible. He could return in June if he doesn’t go under the knife, but this is obviously devastating to fantasy owners.
David Dahl left April 7’s game after experiencing some discomfort. The injury has been described as a slight core injury on his left side. It looked like he may be able to avoid an absence, but the Rockies placed him on the injured last Tuesday, and he does not have a timetable for his return.
Rougned Odor sprained his right knee and was placed on the injured list Saturday. He is expected to miss two weeks and then be reevaluated. Until then, it will be difficult to determine a timetable for his return to the Rangers. Texas called up Danny Santana from Triple-A. Logan Forsythe played second base Sunday and could see a bump in playing time over the next few weeks.
Here are a few more injuries to track this week.
Andrew Benintendi (OF – BOS)
Benintendi fouled a pitch off his right leg and had to be removed from Sunday’s game. He is currently listed as day-to-day but is not starting on Monday.
Gary Sanchez (C – NYY)
Sanchez has a left calf strain that landed him on the 10-day injured list as of April 12. He may be able to return to the Yankees in late April.
Mike Trout (OF – LAA)
Trout had to exit April 9’s game early, and he was not in the lineup over the weekend. He is currently listed as day-to-day with a groin strain and is expected to avoid a trip to the injured list.
Ryan McMahon (1B/2B/3B – COL)
McMahon was placed on the 10-day injured list on April 6 with a strain in his left elbow. He does not currently have a set timetable to return.
Billy Hamilton (OF – KC)
Hamilton had to come out of Thursday’s game early. An MRI revealed an MCL sprain and bone bruise. He is currently listed as day-to-day but did not play over the weekend.
Sonny Gray (SP – CIN)
Gray was hit with a pitch in his last start and has a contusion on his left calf. He had to exit the start early, and he is currently listed as day-to-day. He is expected to make his next start against the Dodgers on Wednesday.
Jon Lester (SP – CHC)
Lester hit the injured list April 10, retroactive to April 9. He has tightness in his left hamstring and may be able to return near the end of the month.
Hyun-Jin Ryu (SP – LAD)
Ryu went on the 10-day injured list on April 9 with a left groin strain. He does not have a set return date at this point.
Arodys Vizcaino (RP – ATL)
The Braves placed Vizcaino on the IL with a sore shoulder that held him out of action since April 7. A similar issue cost him two months last season. A.J. Minter is expected to fill in as Atlanta’s closer.
