FantasyDraft PGA: Recommended Plays for the John Deere Classic

The PGA season is quickly flying by, and with the fourth major tournament on tap next week, the field at the John Deere Classic takes a hit. There are no top-50 players in the official world golf rankings playing this week at TPC Deere Run in Illinois. The favorites in this event are all up and coming phenoms with the likes of Viktor Hovland, Morikorwi, Joaquin Niemann, and Sung-Jae Im headlining the field.

Course Preview

The John Deere Classic is played annually at TPC Deere Run in Illinois. It is a par-71 course that is 7,238 yards long and is played on bentgrass greens. The course has continually been one of the easiest on Tour to score on, as last year it ranked 46 if 51 for course difficulty. Expect lots of birdies and a finishing score around 20-under-par.

Key stats

  • birdie or better
  • strokes gained: approach
  • par 5 scoring
  • performance on bentgrass greens

High Salary Targets

Sungjae Im: $15,900
Having Sungjae priced as the fifth-highest golfer is great value in such a weak tournament field. He has four straight top-25 finishes and leads the entire PGA in total birdies. His scoring average is 12th-best on Tour, and he should be able to go well under-par here.

Brian Harman: $15,800
Harman is in excellent form right now, as he has two top-10 finishes in his last three outings. A prior winner at the John Deere Classic, Harman also has a 10th and 24th at TPC Deere Run.

Mid-Range Salary Targets

Troy Merritt: $13,700
Another golfer in great form right now is Troy Merritt. Fresh off a T-7 finish at the 3M Open, Merritt feels good about his game right now. He is 10th in par 5 scoring, 23rd in birdie average, and 15th in scoring average.

Sam Ryder: $13,600
Ryder finished second at this event last year, and his game is peaking at the right time. He is one of the best putters and approach players in this field (top 50 in the PGA in both). Bentgrass greens are his favorite, as he gains 1.431 strokes on bentgrass surfaces.

Low-End Salary Targets

Shawn Stefani: $12,700
A regular competitor at the John Deere Classic, Stefani knows the course well and has finished as high as 13th here before. He had a very solid showing at the 3M Open last week, finishing 15th and shooting in the 60s in every round.

Scott Stallings: $12,400
Stallings already has a fifth and 16th place finish at this course within his last three outings. He is a steady-approach player (56th in strokes gained: approach) who can get hot on shorter tracks like TPC Deere Run.
