FantasyDraft PGA: Recommended plays for the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational

If you haven’t played on FantasyDraft you should check it out. They have a unique PGA format where you draft 7 with the top 6 scores counting, and more importantly, they offer 100% rake-free contests. We guarantee you won’t find rake-free contests anywhere else. For this week’s tournament…

It was quite the feel-good story last week, as Irishman Shane Lowry was able to win the Claret Jug Trophy on home turf. The final major of the year has now come and gone, but there are still some big events left on the schedule. The PGA Tour heads to Memphis, Tennessee for the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. This is a non-cut event with only 64 players in the field. There is a ton of talent in this tournament with the majority of the top-50 golfers in the world trying to take down the purse. The winner takes home $1.845 million — the second-highest amount for a non-major event.

Course preview

  • TPC Southwind (Memphis, Tennessee)
  • Par 70
  • 7,234 yards
  • Bermuda Greens
  • Course Difficulty (11 out of 51 in 2008)

Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Rory McIlroy are the highest-priced golfers on FantastDraft this week. You could make a case for any of them, but in a non-cut event like this, it may be smarter to fade them and roster some solid mid-salary range golfers. Higher scoring fantasy players should receive a bump this week as birdies will be highly valuable with players guaranteed to play four rounds. The course has a ton of water hazards so driving accuracy and approach will be pivotal.

Key stats

  • Strokes Gained: Approach
  • Driving Accuracy
  • Birdie or Better
  • Par 4 scoring
  • Performance on Bermuda Greens

High Range Salary Targets

Justin Thomas: $16,600
JT has the second-highest fantasy points per tournament and is in great recent form. He played super well at the British Open and fought through some brutal conditions on Sunday to finish top 10. Thomas has one of the best approach games on Tour, as he ranks third in strokes gained: approach. This will be key this week, as approach is said to have the biggest influence out of any stat at TPC Southwind golf course. According to FutureofFantasy.com, Thomas gains the second-most strokes at WGC events — gaining 3.128 strokes on the field.

Hideki Matsuyama: $15,500
The second best on Tour in strokes gained: approach, I expect Hideki to do really well this week. He is one the game’s most premier ball strikers who just needs a couple putts to go his way this week to win. Hideki has scored the sixth-most fantasy points per tournament on FantasyDraft and getting him at this price with a guaranteed four rounds is nice. Matsuyama is 14th in par-4 scoring, and the course has plenty of long par 4s that will play into his sharp iron game nicely.

Matt Kuchar: $15,300
Kuchar is third overall in fantasy points per tournament so getting him as the 17th highest priced golfer this week is a steal. “Kuch” has all the skills to succeed at TPC Southwind this week. He is 10th overall in strokes gained: approach, is the 11th most accurate driver on Tour, and makes a ton of birdies (15th in birdie or better). Finishing top 20 in seven of his last nine events, Kuchar is as consistent as they come.

Mid Range Salary Targets

Chez Reavie: $14, 200
With two consecutive top-10 finishes at TPC Southwind, Chez Reavie makes for a strong play this week. He is the second-most accurate driver on Tour which is crucial this week with tight fairways and multiple water hazards. Reavie is also top 25 in approach and par-4 scoring, a combo that should bode well this week for him. A proven winner last month at the Travelers, Reavie has what it takes to win again at this week’s WGC.

Billy Horschel: $13,900
Billy Horschel really seems to like TPC Southwind. Playing in the FedEx St. Jude Classic, Horschel has three top-10 finishes in the last five years. He has an extremely good all-round golf game and is one of the best putters on Tour (33rd in strokes gained putting). Look for Billys’ accuracy off the tee and course experience to pay dividends this week.

Sergio Garcia: $13,800
Sneakily the fourth-best player in strokes gained: approach, Sergio has a favorable price tag this week. Garcia looked pretty solid at the British Open last week and struggled like many in tough Sunday conditions. He is still a world-class golfer who is 12th in strokes gained: tee-to-green, so getting him at this salary could give you some leverage this week.

Low Range Salary Targets

Nate Lashley: $11,800
The winner of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the end of June, Lashley has a favorable skill set to put up some big-time fantasy points this week. You would probably find it surprising that Lashley is top 20 in strokes gained: approach, greens-in-regulation, bogey avoidance, and par-4 scoring. He is also an elite putter, ranking 28th on Tour in strokes gained: putting.

Keith Mitchell: $11,800
Whenever Keith Mitchell is back on Bermuda greens it makes for a good leverage play. Mitchell grew up putting on Bermuda greens and is most comfortable on this surface. Keith is sixth in strokes gained: off the tee and 28th in birdie or better. If he can find some consistency with his irons, expect him to compete in this non-cut event.
