FantasyDraft PGA: Recommended Plays for Wyndham Championship

If you haven’t played on FantasyDraft you should check it out. They have a unique PGA format where you draft 7 with the top 6 scores counting, and more importantly, they offer 100% rake-free contests. We guarantee you won’t find rake-free contests anywhere else. For this week’s tournament…

The PGA Tour will head to Sedgefield Country Club for the Wyndham Championship. This is the final chance for golfers to earn FedEx cup points ahead of the playoffs, so expect those in the field to be extremely motivated to make one last big push. While the field is not overly strong coming after a Major and a WGC event, we still will see talents such as Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Billy Horschel, Paul Casey, and Patrick Reed make the trip. We can expect a low-scoring affair this week as the average winning score at this event is 17 under par.

Course Preview

Sedgefield Country Club is a par-70, 7127 yard-long course that features Bermuda Greens. This is a fairly short track that ranked 40 out of 51 in course difficulty last year – so expect some good scoring. Fairways are extremely narrow compared to Tour average so we will be targeting accurate drivers of the golf ball. The course is a Donald Ross design that features small, undulating greens with large run-off areas. Approach play will be pivotal for golfers to have a good look at birdies.

Key Stats

  • Strokes Gained: Approach
  • Driving Accuracy
  • Birdie or Better
  • Performance on Donald Ross Courses

High Salary Targets

Webb Simpson: $17,700
The highest-priced golfer on FantasyDraft this week, Webb Simpson is worthy of the hefty price tag. Webb named his daughter Wyndham after his win at this course in 2011, so to say he likes this place is a massive understatement. Simpson is in excellent form, finishing second at the WGC last week thanks to a six-under performance on Sunday. In the last five years at the Wyndham, Webb has finished second, third, fifth, and sixth (four top-10s!). He is one of the most accurate drivers of the golf ball (39th on Tour) and has a super sharp approach game (15th on Tour).

Brandt Snedeker: $16,000
Defending his title this week at the Wyndham Championship, Snedeker is coming off a solid Sunday showing at the WGC last week. He shot an incredible opening round of 59 at this course last year — even after bogeying his first hole. In his last five outings at Sedgefield, Sneds has a first, a third, and fifth-place finish. Snedeker is one of the best putters on Tour and shouldn’t have any problem mastering these tricky greens. Third in strokes gained: around the green, and 11th in strokes gained: putting, Brandt just needs to find some consistency off the tee to put himself in good position for his approach shots to go low once again here.

Billy Horschel: $15, 700
Horschel has found consistent success at the Wyndham Championship with an 11th place finish last year and a fifth-place finish in 2016. Coming off a T-9 at the WGC last week, his game appears to be in solid form as he gained strokes in every statistical category. He has four top-25s in his last seven appearances in the U.S. and is known for getting hot later in the PGA season. A Ronald Ross design specialist, according to FutureofFantasy.com, Horschel gains 2.239 strokes on the field at these courses.

Mid-Range Salary Targets

Martin Kaymer: $14,600
Kaymer is rounding into form as of late, and he will be extremely motivated to do well this week. He needs to retain his PGA Tour Card with a strong showing this week. With a high finish, he could climb into the top 125 in FedEx cup points. Notably strong with his irons, Kaymer is 33rd in strokes gained: approach this year on Tour. Expect Kaymer to make the cut and perform well with his solid all-around golf game.

Scott Piercy: $14,200
Averaging the seventh-most fantasy-points-per-game on FantasyDraft, Piercy makes for a strong play at this price tag. Extremely accurate off the tee (30th in driving accuracy), Piercy should have plenty of birdie opportunities (31st in birdie average) this week at Sedgefield CC. His last outing on Tour was a T-15 at the 3M Open a few weeks ago, so he will be rested and ready to go.

Vaughan Taylor: $13,400
Vaughan is popping in many important statistical categories this week. Taylor is 25th in Driving Accuracy, 63rd in Strokes Gained: Approach, and fifth in Strokes Gained: Putting. Three-putt avoidance is going to be huge this week, and Vaughan is one of the best on Tour with the flat-stick. Coming in with excellent form, he has two top-10 finishes in his last three outings.

Low-End Salary Targets

Ryan Armour: $12,400
Armour is the fourth-most accurate driver on Tour and sneakily ranks 36th in Par 4 scoring. Even more impressive, he finished eighth here last year and fourth in 2017. This is an excellent price for a guy who has superior course history and will not have a problem hitting fairways all week long.

Shawn Stefani: $12,300
This is another golfer who has plenty of experience at Sedgefield Country Club. Stefani has played this event in four of the last five years, which includes a 14th and 24th place finish. Known for his sharp iron play, Stefani ranks 41st in Strokes Gained: Approach this year on Tour. This is a nice price for a guy that does well on shorter tracks.
