Fantasy Baseball Injury Report: Edwin Encarnacion, Aaron Hicks, Hyun-Jin Ryu

It’s time for the Week 18 edition of the Fantasy Baseball Injury Report. There are plenty of injuries from all over the league, and we are here to keep you updated as you head down the stretch run into the fantasy baseball playoffs.

Edwin Encarnacion (1B – NYY) was hit with a pitch in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. He has a hairline fracture in his right wrist and went on the 10-day injured list. The Yankees are having a ridiculous injury season, as Encarnacion was the 25th player to hit the IL this year. He will be re-evaluated in seven-10 days, and a timetable for his return should follow. Aaron Judge missed 48 games with a fractured wrist last season.

If the Yankees didn’t have enough bad news, Aaron Hicks (OF – NYY) felt pain in his elbow while making a throw and left the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. The Yankees placed him on the injured list Sunday with a right flexor strain. While he will likely miss extended time, he avoided ligament damage and will not require Tommy John surgery.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (SP – LAD) has been dealing with neck stiffness, and the Dodgers placed him on the 10-day injured list Friday, retroactive to August 1. Ryu first felt the soreness Thursday morning after Wednesday’s start at Coors Field. The Dodgers were concerned that this type of injury could affect his mechanics, so they played it safe with an ace who hasn’t pitched more than 152 innings in a season since 2013. Although this is not expected to be a long-term injury, there is no official timetable for his return.

Here are a few more injuries to track this week.

Luke Voit (1B – NYY)
Yes, another Yankees injury. Voit went on the injured list Wednesday with a sports hernia. The injury could require surgery that would cost him most of, if not the rest of the season.

Gleyber Torres (2B/SS – NYY)
The brutal week continued when Torres exited Sunday night’s game with a core issue. According to his father, Torres left the hospital Sunday night and is traveling with the team to Baltimore.

German Marquez (SP – COL)
Marquez had to be helped off the field with full-body cramps during his last start. He is currently listed as day-to-day but is expected to make his next start.

Andrelton Simmons (SS – LAA)
Simmons was a late scratch on Sunday with a foot issue and was placed on the 10-day injured list after an MRI. The extent of the injury is not yet known.

A.J. Pollock (OF – LAD)
Pollock missed two games with groin tightness, but he returned Sunday to go 2-for-3 with a double and home run. Still, managers must monitor the oft-injured outfielder.

Yoan Moncada (2B/3B – CHW)
The White Sox placed Moncada on the 10-day injured list August 1, retroactive to July 31, with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain. He could be out two-three weeks.

Ramon Laureano (OF – OAK)
Laureano landed on the 10-day injured list July 31, retroactive to July 29, with a stress reaction in his lower right leg. He does not currently have a set timetable to return.

Ken Giles (RP – TOR)
Giles is dealing with inflammation in his right elbow that contributed to him staying put at the trade deadline. He had a cortisone shot last week and returned in a non-save situation to pitch a scoreless inning Sunday.

David Dahl (OF – COL)
Dahl was carted off the field Saturday with a gruesome-looking injury. The following day, Colorado sent him to the IL with a high right ankle sprain. He’s expected to miss a few weeks.

Byron Buxton (OF – MIN)
Buxton will go on the injured list for the third time this season. This stay might last longer, as he’ll likely miss at least a couple of weeks with left shoulder subluxation.

Willson Contreras (C – CHC)
Contreras also went back to the IL. He’s scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday to determine how much time he’ll sit out because of his right hamstring strain.

Updating Previous Injuries

Gary Sanchez (C – NYY): Groin
Sanchez said that he feels no pain or discomfort in his groin. While this is encouraging news, he has not been given a timeline to return.

Dansby Swanson (SS – ATL): Heel
Swanson was expected to come off the injured list this weekend, but he still felt discomfort. Atlanta’s shortstop may now sit out the week.

Pablo Lopez (SP – MIA): Shoulder
Out with a right shoulder strain since June 19, Lopez began a Double-A rehab assignment July 28. He could return in August if all goes according to plan.

Marcell Ozuna (OF – STL): Fingers
After missing all of July dealing with fractured fingers on his right hand, Ozuna was activated from the injured list Saturday and should be good to go going forward.

Spencer Turnbull (SP – DET): Back
Turnbull has been on the injured list since July 20 with an upper back strain. He started a Triple-A rehab assignment last Tuesday and is scheduled to return to Detroit on Monday against the White Sox.
