DFS Golf Preview: Sanderson Farms Championship (2019)

DFS Golf Preview: Sanderson Farms Championship (2019)

The second week of the PGA’s fall swing season takes us to Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship. Many of the new golfers from the Korn Ferry Tour played well last week at the Greenbrier. Once again, this is another weak field and the prices for some players will seem weird. Just remember that pricing is relative from week to week. A player might be a value normally but, in this field, they are premium. Compare players and pricing to the field, not to what they’ve been in the past.

Coming off a win last week, Joaquin Niemann is the highest-priced player at $11,300 on DraftKings and $11,800 on FanDuel. Brandt Snedeker is the second most expensive on both DraftKings and FanDuel at $10,700 and $11,700, respectively. Sungjae Im ($10,700-DK; $11,600-FD) and Byeong Hun An ($10,000-DK; $10,900-FD) are the other golfers in the top five for pricing on both DK and FD. DraftKings gives you $50,000 to select six golfers (average roster spot of $8,333), whereas FanDuel provides you with $60,000 to select six golfers for an average roster spot of $10,000.

Tournament Notes

  • The tournament is played at the Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi. The par-72 course measures 7,421 yards.
  • This event has typically been an opposite (or alternate) field event but gets its’ own spot in the PGA schedule this year and offers full FedEx Cup points.
  • Four players in this field (Sungjae Im, Brandt Snedeker, Corey Conners, and Lucas Glover) played in the TOUR Championship a few weeks ago.
  • The average winning score for the previous 10 events is 19-under par. Half of those years, the winning score was at least 20-under par, including Cameron Champ’s 21-under par victory last year.
  • There are 156 players scheduled to tee it up this week with the top 65 (and ties) making the cut. Last week was the first time using the PGA’s new cut rules of the top 65 and no secondary cut (MDF). With the new cut rules, 16 players missed the cut that would have made it during the 2018-19 season.
  • Vaughn Taylor has made six consecutive cuts at Sanderson Farms with Lucas Glover making five in a row. Roberto Castro and Nick Taylor have both made the cut in four straight Sanderson Opens.
  • Shawn Stefani and Roberto Castro are the only two players coming into this week with top-10 finishes in their last two starts at Sanderson Farms.
  • This course was the ninth-longest course on tour last year. Most of the distance comes from the four Par 5s. In fact, 2018 saw more than half of all the birdies coming from these Par 5 holes.

Favorite High-Tier Play

Sungjae Im ($10,700-DK; $11,600-FD)
You can’t go wrong with Joaquin Niemann again this week. He might not repeat his win but he could easily contend and pay off his top salary. It is only a matter of time before Im wins on the PGA Tour. His peers rave about his abilities. He finished 19th at the TOUR Championship as he earned Rookie of the Year honors. He now has eight top-25 finishes in his last 11 events. He led the PGA Tour with the most rounds in the 60s so he has shown that he can go low. Only five players on the PGA Tour played the Par 5s better than he did last year (only Wyndham Clark is in this field). Also, don’t sleep on Scottie Scheffler. If Niemann or Im doesn’t win, Scheffler could be the guy hoisting the trophy.

Favorite Mid-Tier Play

Sebastian Munoz ($7,900-DK; $9,600-FD)
His T7 last week gave him his seventh cut in a row. In total, he had seven top-15 finishes during the 2019 season. In the last 10 events that he has made the cut, he’s finished in the top 11 seven different times. He has a T50 and T35 in his last two starts at Sanderson Farms. He is one of the better Par 5 scorers on Tour and was third in Par 5 scoring last week at the Greenbrier.

Favorite Low-Tier Play

Robby Shelton ($7,200-DK; $8,600-FD)
He was inconsistent on the Korn Ferry Tour last year. He was just as likely to contend for a win as he was to miss the cut. He does have a high ceiling that can help you win a GPP. Even last week at the Greenbrier, he was the co-leader going into the weekend after shooting a 62 and a 65. But a bad weekend dropped him to T7. His performance at the Greenbrier gave him his fifth top-10 finish in his last 16 events. This stretch has also included two wins, a runner-up, and another top-five finish – all on the Korn Ferry Tour.

FanDuel Value

Wyndham Clark ($8,400-DK; $9,200-FD)
He is only the 31st highest priced golfer on FD at $800 less than the average roster spot compared to 21st on DK right at the average price. He advanced to the second FedEx Cup playoff event with his T18 at the Northern Trust. He would finish T31 at the BMW, but it wouldn’t be enough to earn a trip to the TOUR Championship. He ended the 2019 season playing the weekend in seven straight events, including four top-20 finishes. He has made the cut at the Sanderson each of the last two years, including finishing 17th two years ago. Only Justin Thomas (not in this field) was better at Par 5s last year than Clark.

DraftKings Value

Roberto Castro ($7,400-DK; $9,200-FD)
He is the 40th most-expensive player on DK but 29th on FanDuel. If you are going to play him, it should be on DK. He has made all four of his cuts at Sanderson Farms, including a T5 and a T4 the last two times he has played here. He has also made five straight cuts on the PGA Tour and was in the top-10 at the Greenbrier in Par 5 scoring.

Course Horse

Vaughn Taylor ($9,300-DK; $10,300-FD)
Nobody in this field is a course horse in the traditional sense as nobody has dominated this course year in and year out. However, in the last five years, only Nick Taylor and Lucas Glover have gained more total strokes at Sanderson Farms. Vaughn Taylor has made six straight cuts here. Though he has yet to have a top-five, he has been pretty consistent with four straight top-30 finishes. His overall form makes his course history even more attractive. He might be primed to get his first top-five finish. He made 20/26 cuts last year, including 10 straight to end the year. He had five top 20s and showed that he can go low as he finished fourth at the Travelers and T6 at John Deere. He played great in the playoffs with a T16 at the Northern Trust and a T30 at the BMW.
