With just a few days left in the regular season, let me open with a word of general advice before moving on to my favorite plays tonight. I’ve suggested a trio of bargain arms tonight in order to spend heavily on bats, but it’s possible other bargain arms will prove to be more appealing tonight if teams run out lineups loaded with the scraps at the end of their 40-man rosters. If that’s the case, don’t hesitate to pivot to other starting pitchers with juicier matchups. Having gotten that out of the way, the three bargain arms I’m suggesting using are accompanied by a pair of huge thumpers as one-off plays and a three-man stack that’s likely to fly below the radar.

Jose Urquidy (HOU): $7,500 at Angels
The Astros have the American League West wrapped up, but they’re still jostling for the best record in the American League with the Yankees. With that in mind, they have something to play for and should trot out a strong lineup (even if they sit a regular or two) to provide offensive support to Urquidy. Houston’s a -199 favorite tonight, according to Pinnacle, and the Angels make for a soft opponent for Urquidy with both Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani shutdown. For Urquidy’s part, he’s been good in the second half. In his four starts in the second half, he’s completed 22.0 innings and spun a 3.68 ERA (3.40 SIERA) with a 0.86 WHIP, 4.7% BB%, and 30.2% K%, per FanGraphs. He has a high ceiling against an Angels squad that’s totaled 81 wRC+ and 24.6% K% over the last 30 days.
