Early Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 5 (2019 Fantasy Football)

Each Sunday night during the season, I’ll be bringing you early waiver wire suggestions to help you get a jump on the competition! Thanks for joining me as we hit the waiver wire looking for players who can help you out for Week 5 and beyond. This week’s group of suggested adds is a bit thin, but there are still some high-upside selections that can improve your squad for the remaining three-fourths of the fantasy season. Let’s dive in!

Wide Receiver

Keke Coutee (HOU): 18% owned
Week 4 stats: 1 reception, 11 receiving yards, 1 carry, 10 rushing yards

It hasn’t been a particularly exciting season for Coutee, but his role should expand if Kenny Stills (hamstring) is forced to miss any time. Stills left Week 4 in the second quarter and may not be good to go for Week 5, opening the door for Coutee to emerge against a weak Falcons team.

Next three weeks: ATL, @KC, @IND

Mohamed Sanu (ATL): 27% owned
Week 4 stats: 9 receptions, 91 receiving yards

Sanu had his best game of the season, racking up 91 receiving yards on 12 targets. It’s the second week in a row he’s gone for at least six receptions and 75 receiving yards. With defensive attention drawn to Julio Jones, Sanu makes a reasonable pickup for those in need of help at wide receiver.

Next three weeks: @HOU, @ARI, LAR

DeVante Parker (MIA): 8% owned & Preston Williams (MIA): 9% owned
Week 4 stats: 4 receptions, 70 receiving yards, receiving TD (Parker), 4 receptions, 46 receiving yards (Williams)

Parker went for 70 yards and a score on four targets and four receptions in another demolition — this time to the Los Angeles Chargers. Parker has seen at least six targets in all four games this season, and he’ll be a boom-or-bust pick up at receiver moving forward. Williams is another Dolphin worth adding, as he’s received 19 targets in two Josh Rosen starts, good for the most among Miami receivers.

Next three weeks: BYE, WAS, @BUF

A.J. Brown (TEN): 10% owned
Week 4 stats: 3 receptions, 94 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs

Brown made the most of his three targets Sunday, catching two of them and taking them to the house for scores. Week 4 marks the second game of the season where Brown went for at least 94 yards, and his two scores were his first as a pro. Brown is worth an add, with no other Tennessee wide receiver making a difference through the first quarter of the season.

Next three weeks: BUF, @DEN, LAC

Cole Beasley (BUF): 12% owned
Week 4 stats: 7 receptions, 75 receiving yards

Beasley saw at least 10 targets for the second straight week and has seen at least nine targets in three of four games this season. His upside certainly isn’t awe-inspiring, but his floor is high, particularly in PPR formats.

Next three weeks: @TEN, BYE, MIA

Running Back

Ito Smith (ATL): 14% owned
Week 4 stats: 2 carries, 11 rushing yards, 2 receptions, 20 receiving yards, rushing TD

Despite his increased production, Devonta Freeman can’t shake the timeshare with Smith. Smith only had four touches Sunday, but he managed a touchdown and continued to vulture carries out of the backfield. He doesn’t have a lot of upside, but a Freeman injury could catapult him into a big workload.

Next three weeks: @HOU, @ARI, LAR

Tight End

Dawson Knox (BUF): 14% owned
Week 4 stats: 3 receptions, 58 receiving yards

Knox went for at least three receptions and 58 receiving yards for the second straight game and displayed his big-time ability thanks to another acrobatic catch. Knox hasn’t made his way into TE1 territory quite yet, but his upside makes him worth a pickup ahead of an exploitable matchup against the Titans in Week 5.

Next three weeks: @TEN, BYE, MIA

Chris Herndon (NYJ): 16% owned
Week 4 stats: N/A

Herndon is suspended through Week 5 of the NFL season, but he needs to be added now so you can beat the rush. He’ll make his debut in Week 6, and with limited options in the Jets’ receiving corps, Herndon should slide back in as a difference-maker on offense.

Next three weeks: @PHI, DAL, NE

Ricky Seals-Jones (CLE): 1% owned
Week 4 stats: 3 receptions, 82 receiving yards, receiving TD

Seals-Jones came alive for 82 yards and a score on three targets and three receptions in Week 4. Though he’s had a tough time making an impact this season, his athleticism and upside are well known. He’s worth a speculative add ahead of a Week 5 matchup against the 49ers.

Next three weeks: @SF, SEA, BYE

Quarterback

Though Dwayne Haskins came in as the Redskins’ starter, he’s not worth a pickup yet, as he went for three picks in his debut. Aside from a Week 6 matchup with Miami, the Redskins have a tough schedule ahead.

Gardner Minshew (JAC): 14% owned
Week 4 stats: 142 pass yards, 2 passing TDs, no interceptions, one carry, two rushing yards

Minshew delivered another quality performance, this time against the Denver Broncos. The rookie quarterback has demonstrated his ability to play it cool under pressure and deliver production at every turn. He’s worth a grab before he gets too expensive, and he has three favorable matchups on tap.

Next three weeks: @CAR, NO, @CIN

D/ST

Carolina Panthers D/ST: 15% owned

The Panthers D/ST continued to make noise in a Week 4 win over Houston. The defensive unit finished the contest with six sacks, an interception, and a fumble recovery while allowing just 10 points. Next up are two favorable matchups against the Jaguars and Buccaneers in Weeks 5 and 6.

Next three weeks: JAC, @TB, BYE
