Fantasy Football Week 2: By The Numbers

Fantasy Football Week 2: By The Numbers

Week 2 was a wild ride, with notable injuries dominating the headlines any time we weren’t talking about the alleged team in Miami. Compared to Week 1 which had players erupting left and right, Week 2 was very odd, as you’ll see below. Plenty of players left owners out to dry, and it was one of those weeks where you could have one stud and that was enough to grab a victory. I don’t want to start giving anything away, so let’s dive right in. Here is your Week 2 by the numbers.

-0.5

The number of fantasy points posted by Drew Brees (QB – NO) on Sunday, which is less than the number of actual points that the Dolphins scored, and that says a lot. Brees it out for roughly six weeks with a torn ligament in his thumb, which downgrades the entire New Orleans offense as far as I’m concerned.

Zero

The number of fantasy points scored by O.J. Howard (TE – TB), DeSean Jackson (WR – PHI), Alshon Jeffery (WR – PHI), DeVante Parker (WR – MIA), and Donte Moncrief (WR – PIT), as well as the receptions by Duke Johnson (RB – HOU) and the actual points scored by the Miami Dolphins. You have my condolences if you started any of them.

Three

The number of combined receptions by Christian McCaffrey (RB – CAR) and Alvin Kamara (RB – NO) in Week 2, a pair that hauled in a combined 17 receptions in Week 1. While game flow had a lot to do with it, fantasy owners of these two studs should be a bit concerned about their respective quarterback situations, as Cam Newton (QB – CAR)  seems to be regressing rapidly, and the Saints will be without Drew Brees for six weeks or so.

Five

The number of non-QBs (and non D/STs, ahem, Patriots) that had more than one TD in Week 2. Those players were: Jeff Wilson (RB – SF), Will Dissly (TE – SEA), Vance McDonald (TE – PIT), Demarcus Robinson (WR – KC), and Julio Jones (WR – ATL). That’s it.

Six

The most targets that anyone had in the Colts-Titans game, shared by T.Y. Hilton (WR – IND) and Delanie Walker (TE – TEN). I am not the biggest fan of either of these passing offenses aside from Hilton, I suppose. Beyond that, I’m trying to avoid.

Eight

The number of targets that Michael Gallup (WR – DAL) had in Week 2, leading the Cowboys. Gallup, unfortunately, is out for a few weeks after a meniscus procedure. Some targets should flow back to Amari Cooper (WR – DAL), plus Randall Cobb (WR – DAL) should see some increased involvement.

Ten

The number of targets that Tyler Boyd (WR – CIN) had for the Bengals, and also the number of receptions that Tyler Boyd had for the Bengals. Boyd posted 122 yards alongside his 100% catch rate, which is an excellent sign for a borderline FLEX play.

13

The number of targets that Sammy Watkins (WR –  KC) had in Week 2, though he only caught six of them. Don’t be afraid to use Watkins in the absence of Tyreek Hill (WR – KC), even following big games from fellow Chiefs receivers Mecole Hardman (WR – KC) and Demarcus Robinson (WR – KC).

15

The number of carries that David Montgomery (RB – CHI) had (18) minus the carries that Mike Davis (RB – CHI) had (3). Week 1 saw a concerning split between the two early down backs on the Bears, but Montgomery seems to have the job locked down.

52%

The snap percentage for Royce Freeman (RB – DEN), compared to 48% for his counterpart Philip Lindsay (RB – DEN). Freeman seems to have a little momentum in his favor, but ideally I’d avoid this backfield until it tips a bit further either way.

75

The number of passing yards that Ben Roethlisberger (QB – PIT) accumulated before leaving the game to an elbow injury. It has since been reported that Big Ben is out for the season, and Mason Rudolph (QB – PIT) will be the Steelers starting QB moving forward which, similar to the Saints, means a downgrade for the whole offense, though I do think Rudolph is one of a few solid backups. Buckle up.

83%

Mohamed Sanu’s (WR – ATL) snap percentage, higher than Julio Jones (WR – ATL) at 82% and Calvin Ridley (WR – ATL) at 64%. I still definitely prefer Jones and Ridley to Sanu, but Sanu seems to be emerging as a legitimate FLEX option moving forward.

97%

Leonard Fournette’s (RB – JAX) snap percentage, the second-highest among any running back in Week 2 (Christian McCaffrey – 100%). If fantasy owners are trying to take solace in something around Fournette’s performances, here you go. I can’t really provide solace around his statistical efficiency, though. Sorry.

120

The number of passing yards from Mitch Trubisky (QB – CHI)…in the whole game. I had my concerns about the Bears passing game, but I didn’t think it would be this uneventful. I’d be very wary of playing any Bears receivers until this gets ironed out.

Are there any other intriguing numbers that you’ve seen in your post-Week-2-travels? Let me know!
