Fantasy Football Feast or Famine: Week 5 (2019)

Fantasy Football Feast or Famine: Week 5 (2019)

If you read the installment of this article last week, you probably started Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff, Davante Adams, Will Dissly, and Adrian Peterson … Oops, my bad on that last one.

This article will look at some players with large discrepancies in their Expert Consensus Rankings (ECR) and try to predict whether those players will feast or be left with a (goose) egg.

Quarterbacks

Tom Brady (NE)
Highest rank: QB2. Lowest rank: QB12.

Prior to holding Daniel Jones to 14.3 points in Week 4, the Redskins had allowed 25.0, 28.7, and 20.4 to Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, and Mitchell Trubisky, respectively. Brady is in a prime position to bounce back from his rough outing against the Bills. It’s not saying much, but Washington is better at defending the run than they are against the pass. This should be one of those games where New England dominates early with their passing game and puts the game away with the run.

Prediction: Feast

Other feasters: Jacoby Brissett (IND) @ KC, Kirk Cousins (MIN) @ NYG.

Philip Rivers (LAC)
Highest rank: QB9. Lowest rank: QB20.

Going back to Week 13 of last season, the Broncos have not allowed a quarterback to total 20 points against them – and that includes a 9-point performance by Rivers in Week 17 last year. This season, Denver has been funneling heavily towards the run – allowing the sixth-most points to running backs, compared to being the sixth stingiest team against the pass. This should be a game that heavily features Austin Ekeler and Melvin Gordon.

Prediction: Famine

Other famines: Marcus Mariota (TEN) vs. BUF, Daniel Jones (NYG) vs. MIN.

Running Backs

Austin Ekeler (LAC)
Highest rank: RB5. Lowest rank: RB27.

The return of Melvin Gordon understandably has Ekeler owners worried, but that doesn’t mean there’s a need to panic and place him on your bench. As I mentioned before — Denver funnels to the run, which should bode well for Ekeler. It’s hard to imagine the Chargers leaving Ekeler high and dry given the way he’s played in 2019. Even if Gordon does garner a lot of touches, there should be plenty to go around in this game.

Prediction: Feast

Other feasters: Aaron Jones (GB) @ DAL, David Montgomery (CHI) @ OAK.

Josh Jacobs (OAK)
Highest rank: RB18. Lowest rank: RB39.

The Bears have now allowed more than 55 yards rushing to any running back since Week 13 of last year. The only score they’ve allowed to the position this season came at the hands of Dalvin Cook in garbage time in Week 4. Jon Gruden’s usage of Jacobs certainly doesn’t inspire confidence to use him in this tough matchup.

Prediction: Famine

Other famines: Nick Chubb (CLE) @ SF, Le’Veon Bell (NYJ) @ PHI.

Wide Receivers

Tyler Lockett (SEA)
Highest rank: WR3. Lowest rank: WR19.

Lockett scored in each of his two games against the Rams last season while averaging 95 yards from scrimmage. Chris Godwin exploded for a line of 12/172/2 while working primarily out of the slot last week, and Lockett should see similar success. As opposed to last week, Lockett should see high usage in what should be a high-scoring affair.

Prediction: Feast

Other feasters: Geronimo Allison (GB) @ DAL, Will Fuller (HOU) vs. ATL.

Sterling Shepard (NYG)
Highest rank: WR13. Lowest rank: WR49.

For the most part, Minnesota’s secondary has done a solid job defending slot receivers in 2019. Golden Tate’s return could move Shepard outside where he’ll see a lot of Xavier Rhodes. Additionally, Tate’s return will likely also negatively impact Shepard’s target share. Shepard is a fade this week.

Prediction: Famine

Other famines: Tyrell Williams (OAK) vs. CHI, Corey Davis (TEN) vs. BUF.

Tight Ends

Tyler Eifert (CIN)
Highest rank: TE3. Lowest rank: TE16.

This is really simple. Any tight end going up against the Cardinals will be a recommended start. Arizona has allowed at least 57 yards and a score to a tight end in every game this season. The Cardinals are on pace to allow 128 receptions for 1,724 yards and 24 touchdowns to the tight end position in 2019. Eifert should also benefit from John Ross’s absence in this juicy matchup. Eifert is a picturesque streamer this week.

Prediction: Feast

Austin Hooper (ATL)
Highest rank: TE4. Lowest rank: TE18.

The Houston Texans are coming off a game in which they held Greg Olsen to two catches for six yards. Hooper is still a good start given the scarcity at the position, but there is buyer beware.

Prediction: Famine
