Fantasy Football Injury Report: Week 5 (2019)
Welcome to the dreaded injury report. Professional football is a violent game, and your fantasy players are going to miss time because of it. Hopefully, you don’t have many names on this list.
Brandin Cooks (WR – LAR)
After making an impressive downfield catch, Brandin Cooks landed hard on his head and briefly lost consciousness. He is currently in the concussion protocol. Given the extra time to recover, it’s possible he gets cleared in time for this weekend. Josh Reynolds will play in three-receiver sets if Cooks misses, but is not a fantasy option.
Wayne Gallman (RB – NYG)
In what may have been his final game as a relevant asset, Wayne Gallman sustained a concussion. With the Giants on a short week, Gallman is unquestionably going to miss Thursday’s game against the Patriots. I still think Saquon Barkley misses one more game. If the Giants do hold Barkley out until Week 7, Elijhaa Penny and Jon Hilliman will form an undesirable committee against the league’s best defense.
David Johnson (RB – ARI)
I didn’t notice anything wrong with David Johnson watching the game, but he is reportedly dealing with a back issue. It is described as minor and there is no indication DJ is in any danger of missing this week’s game. In the unlikely event Johnson is out, Chase Edmonds becomes an immediate RB2.
Darren Sproles (RB – PHI)
The Eagles’ third-string running back injured his quad on Sunday. While I wish Darren Sproles a speedy recover, it simply does not matter. Jordan Howard is the most valuable member of this backfield, followed by Miles Sanders.
Phillip Dorsett (WR – NE)
Very early in the Patriots’ win over the Redskins, Phillip Dorsett strained his hamstring and did not return. I can’t imagine he gets cleared by Thursday. Jakobi Meyers will replace him in three-receiver sets, but he is not fantasy relevant. Dorsett’s absence just means more targets for Josh Gordon and Julian Edelman.
Mason Rudolph (QB – PIT)
The Steelers are down to their third-string quarterback thanks to a hit that did not look that bad but resulted in a devastating concussion. Mason Rudolph was on the ground for a long time and looked completely out of it when he got up. I would be shocked if he played next week. Downgrade everyone.
Sammy Watkins (WR – KC)
After playing through a questionable tag, it took all of a handful of plays before Sammy Watkins aggravated his hamstring injury. He did not return. He is barely a fantasy WR4 when healthy and with Tyreek Hill likely back this week, Watkins is a drop candidate if he is going to miss an extended period of time.
Patrick Mahomes (QB – KC)
Throughout Sunday night’s game, Patrick Mahomes was noticeably limping due to an ankle injury. He played through it and is not going to miss any games because of it, but it is something to be aware of.
