Week 8 Fantasy Football Expert Accuracy Results

Oct 31, 2019

Daniel Jones had a surprising performance in Week 8

It is difficult to believe but the fantasy football season is already halfway complete. We’ve seen some shocking breakouts from D.J. Chark and Terry McLaurin to Darren Waller and the ridiculous Patriots D/ST. Predicting such a volatile sport is enough of a challenge, but weighing the matchups, game scripts, weather, injuries and everything else each week is virtually a sport of its own. At FantasyPros, we want to provide you the most information to help you make the best decisions for your fantasy team, and part of that is showing you which experts have been the most accurate with their rankings. Since we are a halfway into the season, it is time to take a look at the expert accuracy standings so we can see who has been nailing the tough calls like Gardner Minshew’s magic and Darren Fells’ 33-year-old breakout. While we are here, let’s first see which experts had the best fantasy football rankings in Week 8. As always, you can check out the entire standings in our accuracy section.

Jody Smith (FantasyData) had a terrific Week 8, ranking third at quarterback accuracy and fourth at wide receiver accuracy. Many times, the more accurate experts are close to the expert consensus on the majority of the players, but Jody accomplished his big week by being bold. It paid off big, for example, when Derek Carr and Matt Schaub finished inside the top-ten quarterbacks for the week. Jody accurately ranked them four and ten spots higher than the expert consensus did. Likewise, Jody was much lower on Jacoby Brissett (QB #17 vs ECR #13). Over at the wide receiver position, Jody was one of the highest experts on Tyrell Williams but Jody really made his money on the players he recommended fading. Jody was considerably lower than consensus on Jamison Crowder, Preston Williams, Keke Coutee and A.J. Brown. Perhaps his most impressive rankings, however, were on Mike Williams and John Brown. Jody ranked them 12 and 14 spots lower than the expert consensus. Well done, Jody!

There has been plenty of movement over the last month of the season as neither #1 (Dylan Chappine – White Wolf Sports) or #2 (Chris Raybon – The Action Network) were in the top 10 the last time we checked in. Dylan made the leap by somehow placing #2 in Week 5, #2 in Week 6 and #8 in Week 7 out of over 130 analysts around the industry. Dylan is currently the #1 most accurate expert at ranking wide receivers and top-five at ranking quarterbacks. That should come as no surprise since Dylan finished the 2018 season (his first year in the competition) among the top 10 in ranking wide receivers. Congratulations to Dylan on an exceptional first half of the season!

Both Jake Ciely (The Athletic) and  Nathan Jahnke (Pro Football Focus) managed to hold their spots in the top-five over the last two weeks and if their historical success is any indication, they’ll likely be competing to climb to the top spot by season’s end. Several other familiar names are hovering in striking distance too. Justin Boone (theScore) already jumped into the top-ten while some of the most consistently accurate experts, Jeff Ratcliffe – (Pro Football Focus), Sean Koerner – (The Action Network), Bill Enright – (FFChamps), and Pat Fitzmaurice (The Football Girl) are currently just outside the top ten.

Congratulations to everyone off to a great start and our current positional accuracy leaders:

Through four weeks, Matt MacCoy (The Next Big Thing) was off to a start so impressive that regression seemed inevitable. He has somehow improved upon his early pace, though, finishing 26 games above .500 in the last month compared to a still astonishing 20 games above .500 in the first quarter of the season. Matt has done most of his damage by betting over/unders at a clip of 71-43-4. Congratulations to Matt on his continued success and also the leaders of the other two categories. Tim McCullough (Baseball Prospectus) is the site-wide leader against the spread while Bobby Sylvester (FantasyPros) leads the pack on moneyline bets.

We’ll be back again after Week 12 to provide another update on the experts making the most accurate predictions. Until then, be sure to check out the experts’ weekly rankings to help with your lineup decisions.
