5 Interesting Tidbits for Week 10 (2019 Fantasy Football)

5 Interesting Tidbits for Week 10 (2019 Fantasy Football)

Week 10 in the fantasy football season figures to be an interesting one. More starting QBs are getting shifted around, with some returning from injury and others getting benched. We also have a few games that look lopsided right out of the gate, with double-digit point spreads on the opening lines. This can create game flow issues for some fantasy players and headaches for us fantasy owners.

Speaking of headaches, we also have SIX teams on bye this week, which only adds to the difficulty and frustration of filling fantasy lineups. The teams on bye are the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. Needless to say, there are many top fantasy options in this big group, which may lead to difficulties and creativity to overcome these challenges.

To help provide some clarity for Week 10, I have five tidbits that will give you some insight. These tidbits can be useful for projecting value, which will help with lineup construction for both season-long and daily fantasy. All ranks will take half PPR scoring into account.

Philip Rivers surprisingly leads the NFL in passing yards and has a great matchup with the Oakland Raiders on Thursday Night Football.

The Chargers offense has been below average and not impressive at all over the past month. That’s why it is surprising to see that the passing leader heading into Week 10 actually is Philip Rivers, with 2,609 yards. Now, this has not translated into a top fantasy year by any means. Rivers sits at QB16 on the year. Luckily for him, the offense seemed to find a rhythm in the win last week, and they have a great matchup on Thursday.

The Chargers face the Raiders this week in what should be an excellent matchup for the Chargers’ passing offense. Oakland surrenders 297.5 passing yards per game, which is the most in the league. Unlike Rivers, this passing yardage has translated to fantasy, with the Raiders allowing the second-most fantasy points to opposing QBs (24.4). With Rivers completing 75 percent of his passes last week for 294 yards, combined with Melvin Gordon finally finding success on the ground, the Chargers should put together a solid offensive performance against Oakland on the short week. Oakland has given up a league-high 43 passing plays of over 20 yards, so expect Rivers to push the ball downfield early to test them.

Ronald Jones and Devin Singletary are finally taking over their respective backfields, making them starting-level options for this week.

We have been patient, but it finally looks like both Ronald Jones and Devin Singletary will be taking over as the majority leaders in their respective backfields on a consistent basis, which opens up more value at the RB position this week.

Jones had a disappointing rookie season. That spilled into this season through his inconsistent workload in the first half. However, the actions and words of coach Bruce Arians are cause for some optimism. Last week, Jones got the start and had 18 of the Bucs’ 23 backfield carries, which resulted in 67 yards and a touchdown. He has 29 carries in his two games after the bye week. Following his Week 9 game, Arians called Jones “consistent” and “explosive,” stating that he has “earned the right to play a little bit more and start the ballgame.” With an upcoming matchup against the Cardinals, Jones could be in for a big performance, given his workload.

In Buffalo, there has been no question about who is the future in the backfield for the Bills, but the question was when the rookie would be able to take over given his health and any inexperience concerns. It appears the shift has happened, and Singletary is the back to own in Buffalo now. Last week, the rookie played 40 snaps to Frank Gore’s 21, and he had 23 touches to Gore’s 11. This performance came in a game where Buffalo led throughout, showing that the Bills now want to use Singletary in both running and passing situations. In just 52 touches this season, the rookie has totaled 370 yards and three touchdowns. He is a playmaker and a touchdown threat every time he touches the ball.

It should be a great day for RBs in Green Bay, with both the Packers and Panthers struggling to defend opposing backfields.

We have three solid fantasy running backs in the game between the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers. Let’s start with the most obvious. Christian McCaffrey is the most valuable asset in fantasy football this season. He averages 6.9 fantasy points per week more than the RB2. McCaffrey should continue his hot play this week against a Packers defense that allows 4.7 yards per rush (tied for sixth-worst). They also allow the sixth-most fantasy points to opposing RBs, not that it matters, because CMC is matchup-proof, except against Tampa Bay.

For the Packers, they have two RBs that you could start this week. Splitting the time nearly evenly on the field this season is Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams, who are both effective running the ball and catching it out of the backfield. Since Week 6, which is the week Williams returned from injury, Jones has been RB4 while Williams is RB5, with one yard of value separating them. Clearly, both can be effective for fantasy. This week, they face a Panthers defense that allows a league-high 5.1 yards per carry and the fifth-most fantasy points to opposing RBs. With six teams on bye, you can feel great about having either of the Packers’ running backs in your starting lineup.

Damien Williams is emerging as the lead back in Kansas City.

LeSean McCoy had a brutal fumble in the third quarter of the Chiefs’ Week 8 game, which contributed to the loss to the Packers. Andy Reid essentially said that McCoy is a veteran and that he will be fine, but the actions of Reid since certainly point to McCoy being in the doghouse a bit, which has been great for Damien Williams.

Since that fumble, Williams has seen 76 percent of the backfield snaps and 79 percent of the touches. This has led to 21 touches for 158 yards and two touchdowns in five quarters. He played 73 percent of the snaps last week, which was the sixth time Williams has played more than 60 percent of the offensive snaps for the Chiefs. In those six games, he has averaged 23 fantasy points per game. If he continues to see this workload, Williams could be in for another big week as the Chiefs head to Tennessee to face the Titans.

The New York Giants DST is a top-10 streaming option against the New York Jets this week.

With six teams on bye, there is a good chance you or your upcoming opponent will need to make a substitution at defense for this week. One of the most popular streaming options should be the Giants, due to availability and their matchup with the Jets.

Despite being a weak defense in reality, especially on the back end, the Giants’ defense ranks 12th in fantasy points per game over the past four weeks (8.3), which is higher than most would expect. Already, they seem like a solid option for a bye week fill-in, but it gets much better when we consider their matchup with the Jets.

The Jets give up a league-high 16.6 fantasy points per game to opposing defenses. Much of this is due to the offensive line, which is the worst in the league. The Jets rank worst in pressure rate (44.4 percent), worst in sack rate (12.5 percent), worst in points per drive (0.73), and third-worst in turnovers per game (2.1). They also have scored points on just 10.3 percent of their offensive drives this season, which is by far the worst in the league. All of this, combined with the possibility that Le’Veon Bell may be out, make the Giants a terrific option this week.
