7 Things We Learned: Week 10 (2019 Fantasy Football)

This week was full of upsets including the Titans, Browns, and Falcons all pulling off major underdog victories. It then seems fitting that a few regular powerhouse fantasy players fell short in what was a very unpredictable week. Let’s take a look at a few other takeaways from Week 10.

The Saints’ offense threw up a dud against one of the worst defenses in the league.

What is going on? The Saints got stomped at home by the 1-7 Falcons while being 13.5-point favorites. Drew Brees and Alvin Kamara owners were disappointed as the Saints failed to even find the end zone once in the game. This is eerily reminiscent of how the Saints’ offense throttled down around Week 11 last year as Brees had multiple weak fantasy showings, but I would bet on them bouncing back. Michael Thomas was his usual WR1 self posting a 13-152-0 line. Hats off to the Falcons’ defense and head coach Dan Quinn.

Patrick Mahomes is back, and owners of the Chiefs’ passing attack can breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Mahomes returned against the Titans and resumed his usual fantasy dominance throwing for 446 yards and three touchdowns. Tyreek Hill posted a monster 11-157-1 game, and Travis Kelce found his positive touchdown regression with a 7-75-1 line including a score called back on a penalty. It was clear, however, that the Chiefs want Mahomes to protect himself going forward. He had zero rushing attempts and was seen falling out of the way when the Titans returned their defensive touchdown. His rushing bonus might have to wait a few more weeks until the bye, but the star quarterback is back.

The Bucs stay true and surrender top points to the passing game as Kyler Murray and Christian Kirk hook up for three touchdowns, while David Johnson gets shut down.

The Bucs remain must-starts against for quarterbacks and receivers alike as their fantasy passing defense is among the worst while their rushing defense remains among the best. This combo of Murray and Kirk will continue to be fantasy friendly for weeks to come.

With Kirk fully back to health, he and Murray were in sync for deep strikes throughout the game. The Cardinals’ passing game should start to be a little more consistent with Kirk back and Andy Isabella starting to see more meaningful snaps.

Last week, I wrote about major concerns for David Johnson owners. These were brought to life with his five rushes for two yards on the day along with Kenyan Drake seeing significantly more touches (6-16). Fantasy owners might have to start looking elsewhere if Johnson puts up another bad showing.

The Titans’ offense continues to marvel through Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill

Few running backs have carried more sizzle than Henry these last two weeks with fantasy scores of 23 and 32 points. He has now scored over 17 in three of his last four games. This offense, in general, has simply been better since Tannehill took over, who quietly managed to score more than 18 fantasy points for the fourth week in a row.

Cooper Kupp falls flat with zero points.

This is not what you expected out of your star receiver. While he saw four targets, it was Robert Woods and Gerald Everett who led the way receiving for the Rams. The Rams’ offense sputtered overall, but the effects of no longer having Brandin Cooks as a strong deep threat was perhaps felt by Kupp more than anyone. The Steelers’ defense — which has been outstanding lately — was effective in taking him out of the game. Having Cooks back and some better matchups should help Cupp bounce back in future weeks.

What touchdown regression? Aaron Jones keeps feasting on scores.

While the rest of the fantasy world is busy regressing to normal averages compared to their use, Jones could care less and continues to get force fed touches inside the red zone. Much to the chagrin of Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ receiving corps, Jones logged yet another multi-touchdown effort with three scores against the Panthers. He is aiming to finish the year with the most touchdowns among all running backs.

Darius Slayton shines as a diamond in the rough with 10-121-2 receiving.

Slayton was set up very nicely this week. Evan Engram and Sterling Shepard were both out, and he was going against a suspect Jets’ defense. Slayton took advantage of every opportunity to go over 100 yards and hauled in two scores in his massive outing. He has proven more than capable when given adequate playing time, but Engram and Shepard will both likely return and will heavily cut into his target share. Should either continue to miss time, Slayton will remain a worthy flex consideration.
