Fantasy Football Studs & Duds: Week 9 (2019)

Fantasy Football Studs & Duds: Week 9 (2019)

The ninth NFL Sunday is in the books, so let’s take a moment to reflect on the good (Russell Wilson), bad (Aaron Rodgers), and ugly (Stefon Diggs) from a fantasy football point of view. Take note that fantasy scores are listed in terms of half PPR scoring, and you can see the complete player results over at the nifty FantasyPros sortable results page.

STUDS

Russell Wilson (QB – SEA): 39.2 FP
Wilson certainly helped his MVP chances with an elite performance on Sunday. It was the crossroads of efficiency finally meeting volume, as the Seahawks needed every bit of Wilson’s 378 yards and five touchdowns to pull off the 40-34 overtime victory over Tampa Bay. The Seattle quarterback finished with the highest fantasy score of the week (heading into MNF) as a result.

Christian McCaffrey (RB – CAR): 36.1 FP
McCaffrey has been listed in the “studs” category so many times this season, you’d think fantasy enthusiasts would take him for granted. However, the fantasy community continues to marvel over his statistical upside, continuously wondering how a running back can dominate nearly every single week. Sunday’s outing vs. Tennessee was no different, as “C-Mac” tallied 166 total yards and three touchdowns.

Tyler Lockett (WR – SEA): 33.7 FP
Every time Wilson makes this list, you better believe Lockett will follow in some capacity. As mentioned earlier, the Seahawks unleashed their pass-heavy mode against a vulnerable Buccaneers’ secondary, and Lockett came away with the top fantasy performance by a wide receiver (13-152-2).

Mike Evans (WR – TB): 30.0 FP
Evans has landed in the “dud” section several times this season, but he’s trending upward while rubbing elbows with the studs in two consecutive weeks. This matchup at Seattle turned into an old fashioned shootout that yielded the top three fantasy receivers of the week (Lockett, Evans, Metcalf). Evans came up with 12-of-16 targets for 180 yards and a touchdown, leaving fantasy backers feeling good heading into a Week 10 draw against the generous Cardinals.

Also: Jimmy Garoppolo (QB – SF), Lamar Jackson (QB – BAL), Matthew Stafford (QB – DET), Josh Jacobs (RB – OAK)

OUT OF NOWHERE

Kenyan Drake (RB – ARI): 26.2 FP
Wait…what? Drake was traded to Arizona just days before their showdown with San Francisco. With David Johnson and Chase Edmonds sidelined, the former Miami Dolphin stepped into a featured role right away. Making things even crazier, Drake piled up 162 total yards (19 touches) against an impossible 49ers’ defense. That fantasy success could be short-lived, as Johnson is expected to return to the Cardinals’ backfield next week.

Preston Williams (WR – MIA): 21.7 FP
This column has been tough on the Dolphins this season, tagging them in the “ugly” line of the introduction multiple times. However, Miami has been playing better lately, and it finally paid off with their first win of 2019. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick looked good, and Williams was his top receiver with five receptions for 72 yards and two touchdowns. That performance ranked sixth among receivers this week.

Devin Singletary (RB – BUF): 21.5 FP
Finally! Singletary was posting strong efficiency this season, yet the Bills continued to give the mediocrity of Frank Gore more carries. We finally reached the tipping point on Sunday, as Singletary took 20 attempts compared to 11 for Gore. Predictably, the FAU product made the most of his opportunities while racking up 140 yards and a touchdown. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come moving forward.

Jacob Hollister (TE – SEA): 17.7 FP
Hollister also benefited from Wilson’s brilliance on Sunday, as he snagged four receptions for 37 yards and two touchdowns — including the winning score in overtime. That gave him the third-highest fantasy score of any tight end (heading into MNF), although his fantasy success could be short-lived with San Francisco on deck next week.

Also: Melvin Gordon (RB – LAC), Ryan Fitzpatrick (QB – MIA), D.K. Metcalf (WR – SEA), Noah Fant (TE – DEN)

DUDS

Aaron Rodgers (QB – GB): 12.9 FP
Wilson was amazing and Rodgers came out flat, which will likely impact the MVP odds between these two frontrunners. The Packers’ offense couldn’t get much going in Los Angeles against the Chargers, and Rodgers ended up as QB21 on the week. He’ll look to bounce back in a home draw against the Panthers next Sunday.

Tevin Coleman (RB – SF): 4.6 FP
Coleman was the featured stud in last week’s article, but the 49ers’ production came via Jimmy G’s arm this time around. I still can’t get over this Thursday game, where Drake posted 26.2 FP compared to just 4.6 for Coleman. That’s fantasy football for ya!

JuJu Smith-Schuster (WR – PIT): 3.1 FP
It’s safe to say that Smith-Schuster has become a fringe fantasy option with Mason Rudolph at quarterback. He served as a catalyst in countless season-long and daily fantasy leagues last season, but that probably won’t be the case for the rest of 2019 — unless something changes in a hurry.

Stefon Diggs (WR – MIN): 2.1 FP
Some expected a drop-off in production with fellow wideout Adam Thielen back in the mix, but Thielen left early on Sunday after re-aggravating an injury. That’s what makes this dud so disappointing, as the opportunity was there for Diggs to step up. He couldn’t find the connections with QB Kirk Cousins, but he could come through next Sunday night at Dallas, especially if Thielen is still sidelined.

Also: Leonard Fournette (RB – JAC), Nick Chubb (RB – CLE), Davante Adams (WR – GB), Keenan Allen (WR – LAC)
