PGA Preview: RSM Classic

PGA Preview: RSM Classic

This is the last PGA event for the 2019 calendar year. One of the big questions is whether or not Brendon Todd can win a third consecutive PGA Tour event. He is priced much higher than any of us are used to seeing especially since it was not too long ago that in a stretch of 41 events, he missed the cut in 37 of those events. As for this week, Webb Simpson, Billy Horschel, Matt Kuchar, Charles Howell, and Harris English are the consensus top-five golfers this week on both DraftKings and FanDuel. DraftKings gives you $50,000 to select six golfers (average roster spot of $8,333), whereas FanDuel provides you with $60,000 to select six golfers for an average roster spot of $10,000.

Tournament Notes

  • The tournament is played on two different courses at Sea Island Golf Club on Saint Simons Island in Georgia. Everyone will play Thursday or Friday at the Seaside course and at the Plantation course. Both courses are two of the easiest on Tour, though scoring at the Plantation course typically is lower. The weekend will be played on the Seaside course.
  • The Plantation course is a par-72 course measuring 7,058 yards and the Seaside course is a par-70 measuring 7,005 yards.
  • A full-field of 156 players are scheduled to tee it up this week with the top-65 (and ties) making the cut and playing the weekend.
  • Distance is not as important this week as ball-striking and approach game will be more of a focus. The greens are Bermuda.
  • Past champions that are scheduled to play this week include Charles Howell (2018 season), Austin Cook (2017 season), Mackenzie Hughes (2016 season), Kevin Kisner (2015 season), Robert Streb (2014 season), Chris Kirk (2013 season), and Ben Crane (2011 season).
  • The average score the last four years has been 20-under par.
  • Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner are the only two golfers in the field with back-to-back top-10 finishes.
  • In the last five years, only Kevin Kisner and Chris Kirk have had multiple top-five finishes.

Recent Form

Harris English ($10,000 – DK / $11,200 – FD)
Obviously, Brendon Todd is the hottest golfer on the planet right now with back-to-back wins. But Harris English has been dialed in for a few months, as he has made the cut in 16 of his last 18 starts. His fifth-place finish at the Mayakoba gave him his fourth top-six finish in his last five events. In the last 24 rounds, nobody has gained more total strokes or fantasy points than Harris English.

Course Horse

Kevin Kisner ($9,800 – DK / $11,000 – FD)
Four top-10 finishes in the last five years, including a win three years ago. He is far and away gaining the most strokes of any golfer at this course in the last five years. Chris Kirk, Austin Cook, Charles Howell, and Kevin Chappell round out the top five in total shots gained during the last five years. Kisner’s recent form has been mediocre after having a very good fall to end the 2018-19 season.

Favorite Core Play

Adam Long ($7,800 – DK / $9,500 – FD)
He was the runner-up at the Mayakoba last week. This was his fifth top-25 finish in his last 10 events. Overall, he has made the cut in eight of his last 10 starts, including seven in a row. In the last 24 rounds, he ranks fifth in the field in fantasy scoring and 13th in total strokes gained.

Favorite High-Priced Play

Webb Simpson ($11,600 – DK / $11,800 – FD)
He hasn’t played since a T7 at the Shriners more than a month ago, but he doesn’t seem to be affected by lengthy layoffs. The last few times he has taken at least three weeks off, he has performed well (T7 at the Shriners, T30 U.S. Open, T2 RBC Canadian, Fifth at the Masters, T39 at WGC-Mexico, T8 at the Tournament of Champions, and T15 at last year’s Shriners). Overall, in his last nine events, he has four top-10 finishes including three runner-up performances. He has played the weekend in 13 straight PGA Tour events with his worst finish being a T30 at the U.S. Open. In the last 24 rounds played, he is 2nd in the field for total strokes gained and third in fantasy scoring. He finished 3rd last year at this event. If I can’t find the money for Webb, I am also okay dropping down to Billy Horschel as he has two top-10 finishes in the last three weeks and was runner-up at the RSM the last time he played here three years ago.

Favorite Mid-Tier Play

Brian Gay ($8,800 – DK / $10,000 – FD)
His price is higher than we are used to seeing but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a good option. Gay has made the cut in six straight PGA events. Included in this mini streak is a T14 last week at the Mayakoba, T3 at Bermuda, a T7 at the Shriners, and a T23 at the Safeway. As for course history, he has made the cut in four of his last five RSM starts, including a T23 and T3 the last two years. He also had a T4 during the 2014-15 season. During the last 24 rounds, he is fourth in fantasy scoring and seventh in total shots gained.

Favorite Lower-Tier Play

Joel Dahmen ($7,600 – DK / $9,700 – FD)
This seems like a good course for Dahmen and he comes in playing pretty good golf. He was T6 last week at Mayakoba and T9 at the Shriners last month. Overall, he has made the cut in eight of his last nine starts.

Favorite Value Play

Lanto Griffin ($8,000 – DK / $7,400 – FD)
Somebody was asleep at the wheel with Griffin’s FanDuel pricing. He is the 22nd most-expensive golfer on DK at just under the average salary. On FanDuel, he is the 104th priced golfer at $2,600 below the average price. He is a free space on FD this week. He has made the cut in 19 of his last 22 cuts. During that span, he has 13 top-25 finishes, including six top-10s and two wins. He won the Houston Open three weeks ago. In the last 24 rounds, he ranks sixth in total strokes gained and 10th in fantasy scoring. He is a good play on DK and a no-brainer on FD.

Favorite Punt Play

Bo Hoag ($6,700 – DK / $8,400 – FD)
He has made the cut in 12 of his last 13 starts, including six in a row. He was T20 at Mayakoba last week and T11 the week before at Bermuda. He won back in August on the Korn Ferry Tour. In the last 12 rounds, he is 8th in total shots gained and 13th in fantasy scoring in this field.
