Fantasy Football Studs & Duds: Week 16

Fantasy Football Studs & Duds: Week 16

The 16th NFL Sunday is in the books, so let’s take a moment to reflect on the good (NY Giants), bad (Mitchell Trubisky), and ugly (Seattle Seahawks) from a fantasy football point of view. Take note that fantasy scores are listed in terms of half PPR scoring, and you can see the complete player results over at the nifty FantasyPros sortable results page.

Studs

Saquon Barkley (RB – NYG): 39.9 FP
The Giants found themselves in a shootout against Washington, emerging with a 41-35 victory. Barkley did the heavy lifting within that, piling up 189 rushing yards on 22 carries and 90 receiving yards to boot. He also scored a pair of touchdowns. This has been a disappointing, injury-plagued season for Barkley, but it’s nice to see him come through with the highest fantasy output of the week.

Daniel Jones (QB – NYG): 35.3 FP
As mentioned in the previous write-up, the Giants’ offense was clicking on Sunday. That propelled Daniel Jones to the highest fantasy output of any quarterback in Week 16 (heading into Monday). The rookie tossed for 352 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions, spreading the ball around brilliantly to all of his available pass catchers. The Giants will finish the season at home vs. Philadelphia next Sunday.

Kenyan Drake (RB – ARI): 30.4 FP
Drake has topped 30 fantasy points for the second straight week, and he’ll remain in the “studs” category as a result. The Cardinals shocked Seattle with a 27-13 road victory spearheaded by Drake’s 184 total yards with two rushing touchdowns. Arizona will take on the Rams next Sunday, while Drake will shoot for three sweet performances in a row.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (QB – MIA): 32.7 FP
The battle of bad teams in Week 16 turned out to be pretty entertaining (WAS-NYG and this one), at least from a fantasy point of view. The Dolphins topped Cincinnati 38-35 in overtime thanks to the arm of Ryan Fitzpatrick, who went for 419 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Similar to Jones earlier, “Fitzy” spread the ball around nicely on Sunday. Needless to say, it will be difficult for him to repeat against New England next week.

Also: Lamar Jackson (QB – BAL), Patrick Mahomes (QB – KC), Tyler Boyd (WR – CIN), Devonta Freeman (RB – ATL)

Out of Nowhere

Andy Dalton (QB – CIN): 33.8 FP
Dalton got in on the shootout in Miami, posting 396 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Tyler Boyd was his favorite target (9-128-2), and he deserves some love as the top receiver of the week. That duo will need to keep the pace if Cincinnati wants to win their second game of the year in next Sunday’s season finale vs. Cleveland.

Steven Sims (WR – WSH): 19.3 FP
Sims was a pleasant surprise within the Washington-NY Giants shootout, coming away with 6-64-2. He saw 10 targets in this game, which puts him at 22 targets in the last two weeks. He’s finishing the season on a strong note, something that could continue at Dallas next Sunday.

Tajae Sharpe (WR – TEN): 18.0 FP
Sharpe has been overshadowed by rookie teammate A.J. Brown this season, but Tajae came through with a sweet 5-69-2 line against the Saints in Week 16. Take note that fellow WR Corey Davis is dealing with a concussion, so Sharpe could continue to see more work if he’s ruled out.

Mike Gesicki (TE – MIA): 20.2 FP
Gesicki was one of the preferred options of stud Ryan Fitzpatrick on Sunday, as the Miami TE came away with six catches, 82 yards, and two scores. The Dolphins don’t have much of a running game, so Gesicki will remain a weekly option with consistent targets. Even with that being the case, expectations should be tempered against New England in Week 17.

Also: Damien Williams (RB – KC), Kaden Smith (TE – NYG), Hunter Renfrow (WR – OAK), Mark Andrews (TE – BAL)

Duds

Russell Wilson (QB – SEA): 11.0 FP
The Seahawks came out flat on Sunday, and Wilson finished with just 156 passing yards and a score. Making matters even worse, Seattle sustained a few tough injuries (more on that later) to potentially impact their strength for the playoffs. Wilson and company will look to bounce back next Sunday night vs. San Francisco.

Chris Carson (RB – SEA): 6.5 FP
Carson sustained a hip injury in Week 16, leaving him with an underwhelming performance. His efficiency looked good prior to the exit, racking up 60 rushing yards on nine carries. Rashaad Penny is on injured reserve and C.J. Prosise left Sunday’s game with an injury as well. That makes the run-heavy Seahawks unbelievably thin at running back.

Nick Chubb (RB – CLE): 4.5 FP
Chubb is having a tough final stretch of the season, as it appears that Kareem Hunt will be more and more involved moving forward. He had 15 carries for 45 yards on Sunday against the Ravens, as Hunt saw more snaps with the Browns trailing. Even though Chubb will probably win the rushing title, his fantasy stock is dropping.

Amari Cooper (WR – DAL): 4.4 FP
Cooper has been in the “dud” section for two straight weeks, and we should officially hit the panic button. The Dallas WR insists that he’s fully healthy after battling through multiple injuries, but the stat-lines have been underwhelming nonetheless. A tasty matchup against Washington next week could inspire a bounce-back performance.

Also: Philip Rivers (QB – LAC), Dak Prescott (QB – DAL), Mitchell Trubisky (QB – CHI), Tyler Lockett (WR – SEA)
