Fantasy Football Studs & Duds: Week 17 (2019)

Fantasy Football Studs & Duds: Week 17 (2019)

The last NFL Sunday of the regular season has been completed, so let’s take a moment to reflect on the good (Derrick Henry), bad (Phillip Lindsay), and ugly (Pittsburgh Steelers) from a fantasy football point of view. Take note that fantasy scores are listed in terms of half PPR scoring, and you can see the complete player results over at the nifty FantasyPros sortable results page.

STUDS

Derrick Henry (RB – TEN): 39.1 FP
Sunday was good to Derrick Henry. His team secured a spot in the playoffs, and the Tennessee RB had a monster performance that helped him win the NFL rushing crown. Henry took 32 carries for 211 yards and three touchdowns against Houston, leaving his fantasy backers to count their money on Monday morning.

Ezekiel Elliott (RB – DAL): 25.9 FP
Elliott came into the week with one of the best overall matchups, and he didn’t disappoint. The Dallas RB ran through Washington for 122 yards and a score on the ground. He also added a receiving touchdown to boost his fantasy total. As a result, Elliott finished in the top ten of fantasy players for Week 17, and he’s the fourth-best fantasy RB of 2019.

Joe Mixon (RB – CIN): 30.1 FP
Mixon really came on strong to finish the season, which was topped off by a career-high 162 rushing yards on 26 carries vs. Cleveland. The Cincinnati RB finished with 176 total yards and a pair of scores, which was enough to secure the fourth-highest fantasy output of the week.

Dak Prescott (QB – DAL): 29.6 FP
Prescott finished with the top fantasy score for a quarterback in Week 17. Of course, that was somewhat easier than normal with several elite signal-callers resting or playing limited snaps in anticipation of the playoffs. Fantasy backers will take it either way, and Dak finished as the second-best fantasy QB of the season with 21.8 FPPG.

Also: Damien Williams (RB – KC), Jared Goff (QB – LAR), Breshad Perriman (WR – TB), A.J. Brown (WR – TEN)

OUT OF NOWHERE

Boston Scott (RB – PHI): 33.8 FP
The story of Boston Scott is inspiring, regardless if you are an Eagles fan or not. The former practice-squad RB took 19 carries for 54 yards with three touchdowns on Sunday, adding four catches for 84 yards. Miles Sanders left the game in the second quarter, so Scott took over as the primary back from that point. He definitely made the most of his opportunities, finishing with the second-best fantasy showing of the week.

Michael Gallup (WR – DAL): 30.3 FP
The Cowboys came through in Week 17, at least from a fantasy point of view. Michael Gallup was the most surprising factor within that, as he picked up the slack with fellow WR Amari Cooper struggling as of late. Gallup finished as WR1 this week (5-98-3), and it wasn’t even close.

Gardner Minshew (QB – JAC): 25.5 FP
Minshew was the second-best fantasy quarterback on Sunday, as the Jags pulled off a 38-20 upset victory over Indianapolis. Minshew threw for 295 yards with three touchdowns. He also tossed a two-point conversion to pad his numbers. The sixth-round pick proved himself as a respectable fantasy asset at times this season, and Sunday’s game served as the proverbial cherry-on-top.

Deebo Samuel (WR – SF): 22.0 FP
Samuel came through on Sunday Night Football, helping the 49ers to victory over Seattle. The rookie had five catches for 102 yards while adding 33 yards and a touchdown on the ground. That marks the second-straight game with a rushing score. Samuel finished with 961 total yards in his first NFL season, and he has laid the foundation for a strong professional career.

Also: Mike Boone (RB – MIN), Dan Arnold (TE – ARI), Hunter Renfrow (WR – OAK), Ryan Fitzpatrick (QB – MIA)

DUDS

Patrick Mahomes (QB – KC): 12.1 FP
Mahomes was considered to be the top fantasy quarterback of the week by most experts. However, the Chiefs didn’t really need him on Sunday, as Damien Williams and the rushing attack did the heavy lifting. As a result, Mahomes finished with 12.1 FP, making him 21st in FP among signal-callers in Week 17.

Travis Kelce (TE – KC): 3.9 FP
Mahomes’ pedestrian stat-line unsurprisingly led to subpar output from his tight end. Kelce hauled in just three receptions for 24 yards against the Chargers. With that, the Chiefs’ big target still had enough to finish as the best tight end of the season with 9.8 fantasy points per contest.

Phillip Lindsay (RB – DEN): 5.3 FP
I had high hopes for Lindsay against a weak Oakland defense, but things didn’t go his way. The Denver RB racked up 53 yards on 18 carries, but he failed to catch a pass or reach the end-zone. On the bright side, he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark with that performance.

Michael Thomas (WR – NO): 5.7 FP
Similar to the write-ups of Mahomes and Kelce above, the Saints really didn’t need Thomas in their 42-10 triumph over the Panthers. Thomas entered the game with three-straight showings of 125+ yards, but he was pretty tame in Week 17. Despite that, he still finished as the best fantasy WR of the season with an 18.8 FPPG average.

Also: Julio Jones (WR – ATL), Courtland Sutton (WR – DEN), Julian Edelman (WR – NE), Emmanuel Sanders (WR – SF)
