Running Back Roundup: Week 14 (2019 Fantasy Football)

Running Back Roundup: Week 14 (2019 Fantasy Football)

We’ve arrived at the fantasy playoffs, and the concluding week of the regular season included some surprise performances. Two of the top five rushers on the week were Redskins, as Derrius Guice finally broke out. Derrick Henry led the league in rushing for the third week in a row, as he crossed the 1,000-yard threshold for the first time in his career. Raheem Mostert had a career day against Baltimore, James White led all backs in scrimmage yards, and Tevin Coleman and Aaron Jones flopped hard for disappointed fantasy owners.

Rashaad Penny continued his late-season surge, and he’s become a must-play in the Seahawks electric, run-heavy offense. Dalvin Cook didn’t finish Sunday’s game while dealing with a shoulder injury, and Alexander Mattison finished the contest strong. The rookie could carry owners to a championship if Cook is forced to miss any time.

Each week, we’ll offer a look at the biggest performances, busts, timeshare situations, and storylines you need to be aware of to make the best fantasy lineup decisions possible. Let’s jump into our Running Back Roundup for Week 14!

2. Sony Michel (NE): 4.5
3. Aaron Jones (GB): 7.1
4. Mark Ingram (BAL): 8.2
5. Phillip Lindsay (DEN): 9.2

Philadelphia Eagles

Miles Sanders: 17 carries, 83 rushing yards, 5 receptions, 22 receiving yards, receiving TD
Jay Ajayi: 2 carries, 9 rushing yards

Sanders took on another big workload in Week 13 as Jordan Howard (shoulder) sat on the sidelines. Ajayi remains an afterthought despite the lack of depth in Philly’s backfield, and it looks like Sanders has the full confidence of Doug Pederson. He’s an upside RB2 as long as Howard is out, though it’s possible the rookie continues to see more run even with JoHo back in the mix.

Miami Dolphins

Patrick Laird: 10 carries, 5 rushing yards, 4 receptions, 43 receiving yards, rushing TD
Myles Gaskin: 2 carries, 20 rushing yards, 6-yard reception

Kalen Ballage (leg) left Sunday’s game early, and Laird led the backfield in touches on the day after his exit. He’s been a consistent contributor in the receiving game over the last few weeks, and he should be in for the starting gig moving forward. Gaskin is a handcuff without much upside, while Laird has some flex appeal in PPR leagues thanks to his pass-catching abilities. Ballage landed on injured reserve, leaving the backfield wide open.

Cleveland Browns

Nick Chubb: 16 carries, 58 rushing yards, 21-yard reception
Kareem Hunt: 7 carries, 46 rushing yards, 5 receptions, 19 receiving yards, receiving TD

Chubb remains the lead back, but Hunt isn’t going anywhere. This has turned into a 60-40 timeshare, with Hunt handling the majority of the pass-catching duties. Since his return from suspension, Hunt has put together 243 total yards and two touchdowns, including 20 receptions in just four games. Chubb has settled in as more of an RB2 with Hunt carrying obvious flex value.

Washington Redskins

Derrius Guice: 10 carries, 129 rushing yards, 2 receptions, 8 receiving yards, 2 rushing TDs
Adrian Peterson: 13 carries, 99 rushing yards, rushing TD

Guice finally had his breakout game as a pro, racking up an impressive 137 scrimmage yards on just 12 touches and scoring a pair of touchdowns in the surprising victory over Carolina. Peterson finished with one more touch and had an impressive game of his own. Guice is on the flex radar due to his explosiveness and athleticism, though he still remains difficult to trust, given his shared workload with AP and Washington’s unpredictable offense.

San Francisco 49ers

Raheem Mostert: 19 carries, 146 rushing yards, 2 receptions, 8 receiving yards, rushing TD
Tevin Coleman: 5 carries, 6 rushing yards, 9-yard reception

Mostert rolled a stout Ravens defense for a career-high 146 rushing yards while snatching lead back duties from Tevin Coleman in the process. Coleman’s arrow has been pointing down for a couple of weeks now, and it’s unclear how involved he’ll be if Matt Breida (ankle) returns in Week 14. Mostert needs to be owned everywhere as a potential league-winner, as he could be looking at a massive workload if Breida remains banged up and Coleman continues to underachieve.

Arizona Cardinals

Kenyan Drake: 13 carries, 31 rushing yards, 2 receptions, 20 receiving yards
David Johnson: 4 carries, 15 rushing yards, 2 receptions, 9 receiving yards

DJ took a backseat to Drake once again, despite being “fully healthy” for Week 13’s matchup with the Rams. Johnson can’t be trusted for the first week of the fantasy playoffs, and he’s shaping up into a real grinch for unlucky owners this season. Neither of these players should be deployed in Week 14, though both need to be held to see how the workload shakes out.

New England Patriots

James White: 14 carries, 79 rushing yards, 8 receptions, 98 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs
Sony Michel: 10 carries, 45 rushing yards

Michel was out-touched and out-produced soundly by White, scampering for just 45 yards and not drawing a single target. Game-script was in White’s favor, as the Patriots surprisingly fell behind early, but the trust from Tom Brady is evident. Michel’s 3.5 yards per carry and lack of involvement as a receiver have caught up with him, and he’s hard to trust as more than a boom-or-bust flex. White is an easy RB2 in PPR formats, and he could be in line for another large workload against the Chiefs in a likely shootout in Week 14.
