Week 13 Target Analysis (2019 Fantasy Football)

Week 13 Target Analysis (2019 Fantasy Football)

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend that featured three Thanksgiving Day games, a great slate of Sunday games, and a shootout in Seattle on Monday Night Football. This is when it feels like the regular season amps up as the NFL teams have only four games remaining on the schedule. It is a time fo the contenders to improve their seeding, for the teams on the brink of the playoffs to secure their playoff berth, and for the rest of the league to develop and evaluate players for 2020.

It is also the time that fantasy football owners either finish their regular season or begin the fantasy playoffs. These are the most important games of the year for every fantasy owner when bragging rights are won and dreams of fantasy glory are shattered. Here is a look back at Week 13 with a breakdown of how all the teams distributed the ball on offense. If you want to see how much every player was targeted, take a look at Fantasy Pros Most Targeted Players.

Arizona Cardinals: Rookie QB Kyler Murray had a pretty weak game against the Los Angeles Rams, finishing with just 163 yards passing, no passing touchdowns, and one pick. Their lone touchdown came on a rush by Murray with the team down 34-0 in the fourth quarter.

WR Larry Fitzgerald was the only player to top 30-yards receiving, finishing with seven targets, six receptions, 56 yards, and one touchdown. WR Christian Kirk finished with seven targets, three receptions, and just 23 yards. This is life with a rookie quarterback in the NFL.

Some weeks the Cardinals offense looks brilliant and sometimes it looks like it did on Sunday against a good Rams team that has struggled with consistency and needed a win to save their season. The Cardinals have another tough home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Atlanta Falcons: QB Matt Ryan was without his best receiver, WR Julio Jones and it showed in his lack of efficiency. He did have 312 yards passing and two passing touchdowns, but it took 50 pass attempts and he also had two picks and nine sacks.

WR Calvin Ridley finished with 10 targets, eight receptions, and 91 yards. WR Russell Gage ended up with five receptions for 52 yards and one touchdown and the other touchdown went to TE Jaeden Graham. Hopefully, for the Falcons, they will have Jones and TE Austin Hooper back this week. That would be a huge boost to the passing game, but would severely hamper Gage’s fantasy value.

The Falcons have a nice matchup with a struggling Carolina team that managed to lose to Washington in Week 13 and fired head coach Ron Rivera ahead of Week 14.

Baltimore Ravens: The Lamar Jackson show was impressive again with him have 16 rushing attempts for 101 yards and one rushing touchdown in a 20-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers. That did not leave much for the passing game with Jackson finishing with just 105 yards passing, one passing touchdown, and no picks.

TE Mark Andrews led the way with six targets, three receptions, 50 yards, and one touchdown. Backup TE Hayden Hurst added three receptions for 21 yards and the only other player that had more than one reception was RB Mark Ingram, who had two receptions for three yards.

Baltimore is a Super Bowl contender and Jackson an MVP candidate. Their receivers are last in 0.5-point PPR with just 20.1 fantasy points per game. They have another very tough matchup at the Buffalo Bills tough defense. Andrews is really their only reliable weapon in the passing game for fantasy purposes. WR Marquise Brown has been reliable at times this year, but it is hard to start a fantasy receiver that can have one reception for one yard like Brown had on Sunday.

Buffalo Bills: QB Josh Allen had a very efficient game with 19 completions on 24 attempts for 231 yards, one touchdown, no picks, and a QB rating of 120.7. He showed well on Thanksgiving Day against a tough Dallas defense on the road. His favorite target was WR Cole Beasley, who had seven targets, six receptions, 110 yards, and one touchdown. RB Devin Singletary ended up being their second-leading receiver with three receptions for 38 yards and one touchdown. WR John Brown had a down game with three receptions for 26 yards and no touchdowns on just four targets.

This is typical of the Bills passing game, usually, Beasley or Brown will have the big game and there is not enough production to make the other fantasy relevant. Brown has been the more consistent player this year, but this week it was Beasley finding revenge against his former team. The Bills have a tough matchup at home against Baltimore this week.

Carolina Panthers: Ron Rivera had a solid run in Carolina, but home losses to Atlanta and Washington sealed the deal. Those teams were 2-7 and 2-9 when the Panthers faced them and they should have been easy wins. They all but ensure the Panthers will not make the playoffs for the third time in four years. Perry Fewell will serve as the interim head coach, Norv Turner is now special assistant to the head coach, and QB coach Scott Turner will serve as offensive coordinator for the rest of the season. I would not expect a major departure from their normal scheme this year.

It is going to be a lot of RB Christian McCaffrey in both the running game and the passing game. WR D.J. Moore and TE Greg Olsen should still be the main targets in the passing game with WR Curtis Samuel also being a less consistent fantasy option. Their passing game was actually not terrible in fantasy against Washington. Moore led the way with six receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown and Samuel adding four receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown. QB Kyle Allen will continue to be the starter in Week 14 and the Panthers will hope he can finish the season strong. They have a road game at Atlanta in Week 14.

Chicago Bears: Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky had one of his best games of the year with 338 yards passing on just 38 passing attempts. He also had three touchdown passes and no interceptions with a QB rating of 118.1.

WR Anthony Miller led the way with 13 targets, nine receptions, 140 yards, and no touchdowns. WR Allen Robinson II added eight receptions on 12 targets for 86 yards and one touchdown. The other two passing touchdowns went to TE Jesper Horsted and RB David Montgomery.

The problem is that Trubisky could revert back to his old self in Week 14 against a much better Dallas Cowboys D. I would not trust anyone other than Robinson in the passing game. One good game on a short week against a horrible Lions defense should not make anyone forget how bad this offense has been this season.

Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals won their first game of the season against the New York Jets, but their passing game had only 243 yards passing and one passing touchdown. QB Andy Dalton was much better for their passing game in his first start since Week 8, but that resulted in WR Auden Tate leading the team with four receptions for 66 yards and WR Tyler Boyd had five receptions for 59 yards and that one touchdown.

I still would not trust this offense most weeks. It has one of the lowest floors in the league with Boyd being the only option that I would consider most weeks among their wide receivers and tight ends. The Bengals face the Cleveland Browns on the road in Week 14, which could be one of the worst offensive games of the season between two of the most inconsistent offenses in the NFL.

Cleveland Browns: QB Baker Mayfield managed only 196 yards passing, one passing touchdown, and one pick in a 20-13 loss at the Pittsburgh Steelers that essentially ended their playoff chances. The lone touchdown went to RB Kareem Hunt, who also had five receptions for 19 yards. WR Jarvis Landry led the way with 11 targets, six receptions, and 76 yards. Nobody else had more than 30-yards receiving, which includes WR Odell Beckham Jr. with three receptions for 29 yards.

This offense has one of the lowest floors in the league, especially against a good defense like Pittsburgh. They have a good matchup at home against the Cincinnati Bengals, but the Bengals slowed down one of the hottest offenses in the league last week, the New York Jets. I still would only start Landy, Beckham, and Hunt in the passing game and hope for the best.

Dallas Cowboys: Cowboys QB Dak Prescott may have ended up being on the losing end of the game, but he was still good in fantasy with 355 yards passing and two passing touchdowns.

WR Amari Cooper rebounded from no receptions against the New England Patriots to post 11 targets, eight receptions, 85 yards, and no touchdowns. RB Ezekiel Elliott added 10 targets, seven receptions, 66 yards, and no touchdowns. WR Michael Gallup added three receptions for 63 yards and WR Randall Cobb had three receptions for 53 yards.

The one downside to the game in fantasy is that the touchdowns went to TE Jason Witten and WR Ventell Bryant instead of the star players in the offense. The Cowboys will have a tough matchup in Week 14 at the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football.

Denver Broncos: QB Drew Lock was not great in his first start, but the good thing to see is that WR Courtland Sutton could still be trusted with four receptions, 74 yards, and two touchdowns. No other player had more than 15-yards receiving, as Lock had just 134 yards passing in his NFL debut.

This has been the case most of the season, Sutton looks like a star most weeks, TE Noah Fant has a high ceiling and a low floor, and nobody else is really worth playing in fantasy in their passing game. The Broncos face the Houston Texans on the road in Week 14, which means that Sutton is probably the only safe play again this week and even he is dicey with a quarterback that had only 134 yards passing in his home debut.

Detroit Lions: Third-string QB David Blough filled in fairly well for the Lions and finished the day with 280 yards passing, two passing touchdowns, and one pick. The only skill position player that benefited from that production was WR Kenny Golladay, who had four receptions for 158 yards and one touchdown. That touchdown came on a 75-yard touchdown reception very early in the game. WR Marvin Jones added three receptions for 40 yards and one touchdown. Nobody else had more than 35-yards receiving or found the end zone.

The Lions have a tough road game in Week 14 against the Minnesota Vikings. Starting QB Matthew Stafford had 364 yards passing and four passing touchdowns the last time he played the Vikings, it seems hard to believe the Lions will have that type of game without Stafford. Golladay and possibly Jones are the only players I would trust in this matchup if Stafford does not play. Jones is even hard to trust, except he had four touchdown receptions the last time these teams played.

Green Bay Packers: I thought the Packers were pretty mediocre passing the ball for most of the game this week. They were playing at a horrible Giants team and were in a 17-13 game before QB Aaron Rodgers had two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to seal the game and turned the passing day into a solid outing. Rodgers was 21 for 33 with 243 yards passing, four passing touchdowns, and no picks. WR Allen Lazard had three receptions for 103 yards and one touchdown. WR Davante Adams added 10 targets, six receptions, 64 yards, and two touchdowns. Nobody else eclipsed 30-yards receiving.

It was a good bounce-back game after a terrible showing at San Francisco, but there is still a lot of work to do. The Packers have another great matchup as they host Washington in Week 14.

Houston Texans: QB Deshaun Watson finally earned a win over New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, as the Texans beat the Patriots 28-22 at home. Watson was 18 for 25 with 234 yards passing and three passing touchdowns.

WR DeAndre Hopkins led the way with eight targets, five receptions, and 64 yards. WR Kenny Stills, RB Duke Johnson and TE Darren Fells scored the touchdowns. The disappointment was WR Will Fuller with just one reception for eight yards. He was only targeted twice against a Patriots team that does not allow many deep passing plays.

The Texans have another tough matchup at home against the Denver Broncos fifth-ranked fantasy quarterback defense. Hopkins is always a strong play, but Fuller is the more dicey option against another defense that does not give up a lot of deep passes.

Indianapolis Colts: TE Jack Doyle seemed to benefit from the loss of TE Eric Ebron, as he had 11 targets, six receptions, 73 yards, and the Colts only receiving touchdown of the game. WR Zach Pascal also had 10 targets, seven receptions, and 109 yards. The only other player with over 50-yards receiving was WR Marcus Johnson.

I really like the job that QB Jacoby Brissett has done this season. He was thrust into an impossible situation of taking over for QB Andrew Luck and he has kept this team in the playoff hunt the entire season. From a fantasy perspective, it has been a disaster. Luck was one of the most prolific passers in the league when healthy, this offense is 26th in passing yards and fourth in rushing yards.

Doyle looks like he will be fantasy viable the rest of the way and Pascal will remain viable until T.Y. Hilton returns from injury. The Colts face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14, which is a great matchup in fantasy for passing the football. The problem is the Colts offense is extremely risky to trust them even in great matchups.

Jacksonville Jaguars: QB Nick Foles had a terrible start to the regular season when he broke a collarbone and missed two months. It now looks like the Jaguars wasted over $50 million in guaranteed money, because he has not looked like a plausible NFL quarterback the last three games and the Jaguars are going to go back to sixth-round pick, Gardner Minshew. It is possible that Foles will play only four games with the Jaguars instead of the four years in his contract, but that is life in the NFL.

WR Dede Westbrook scored the only touchdown of the game and he led the way with five receptions for 60 yards. I think this is a big win for WR D.J. Chark, who has not topped 50-yards in his last two games playing with a struggling Foles. The Jaguars play a Los Angeles Chargers team that seems to invent new ways to lose every week, but is also seventh against fantasy quarterbacks.

Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs scored 40 points in this game, but unfortunately for fantasy owners, three different players scored three rushing touchdowns and the defense also scored a touchdown. That means that the passing game only produced 175 yards passing on 29 passing attempts and one touchdown. That touchdown was also scored by a running back, Darrel Williams. TE Travis Kelce led the way with nine targets, five receptions, and 90 yards receiving. WR Tyreek Hill added eight targets, five receptions, and 55 yards.

Part of the issue was a 21-0 halftime lead over a team that cannot score 10 points right now, which allowed Kansas City to take the air out of the football in the second half. The Chiefs have a very tough game at a New England D that is coming off a 28-22 loss at the Houston Texans. The Chiefs have the talent to score on the best fantasy quarterback defense in the NFL, but the numbers have not been there in recent weeks.

Los Angeles Chargers: I really do not think that QB Philip Rivers is the problem in Los Angeles. I think he is the victim of playing with a subpar head coaching staff, a terrible offensive line, and a team that makes too many mistakes in close games to win. Sometimes those mistakes are his and he has to own his share of the responsibility for this terrible season, but he has had a lot of help making that happen. He was good in this game with 265 yards, two passing touchdowns, and one pick. He drove them for the game-tying field goal before his team allowed the Broncos to kick a game-winning field goal as time expired.

WR Keenan Allen and RB Austin Ekeler scored the receiving touchdowns and WR Mike Williams led the way with 117 yards receiving. TE Hunter Henry was missing all game with just three targets, two receptions, and 10 yards.

The Chargers are on the road in Jacksonville, which is a decent matchup. If the Chargers bench Rivers for backup QB Tyrod Taylor, the entire passing game would take a huge hit with a quarterback that has consistently struggled to throw the ball.

Los Angeles Rams: Goff finally looked like a good quarterback again, although facing the Arizona Cardinals will help a lot of quarterbacks in that regard. Goff had 424 passing yards on 43 pass attempts with two touchdowns and no picks.

WR Robert Woods led the way with 19 targets, 13 receptions, 172 yards and no touchdowns. WR Cooper Kupp added six receptions on six targets for 65 yards and one touchdown. TE Tyler Higbee did a great job filling in for TE Gerald Everett and came up big against the worst tight end defense in the league. He had seven receptions for 107 yards and one touchdown.

The one disappointment in this game was with that much passing production, WR Brandin Cooks was virtually invisible. In his second game back from injury, he had two receptions for 24 yards. This was a week after having two receptions for 32 yards in a blowout home loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Cooks just has not been a big part of this offense and at this point it is safe to sit him on your fantasy bench or look for more productive players to roster for the playoffs.

The Rams have a tough matchup at home against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14.

Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins had four touchdown passes but the pass by P Matt Haack to K Jason Sanders was one of the most entertaining plays I have seen on the season. I do not think many fantasy owners had Haack in their lineup, but maybe they should after that play.

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick had 365 yards passing and three passing touchdowns. The big plays went to their two viable fantasy weapons in the passing game. WR DeVante Parker had seven receptions for 159 yards and two touchdowns on 10 targets. TE Mike Gesicki added five receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown on seven targets. No other player had more than 45-yards receiving.

The Dolphins have a great matchup in Week 14 at the New York Jets. Parker and Gesicki should be in fantasy lineups for that favorable matchup.

Minnesota Vikings: RB Dalvin Cook has been battling a shoulder issue for a few weeks now and it knocked him out of the game on Monday Night Football. He should be good to play this week, but QB Kirk Cousins showed well without his star running back. He had 276 yards passing and two passing touchdowns.

It seems like TE Kyle Rudolph scores at least a touchdown a week and he was involved again this week with four receptions for 50 yards and one touchdown. WR Laquon Treadwell ended up leading the team with 58 yards receiving on his lone reception of the game, which went for the other touchdown.

The Lions defense is among the worst in the league right now and Cousins should have a huge game at home, even if Cook has to take Week 14 off with his shoulder injury. I would expect WR Stefon Diggs to rebound from a poor performance and WR Adam Thielen to also be a good fantasy option if he is healthy enough to go this week.

New England Patriots: QB Tom Brady had 326 yards passing and three touchdowns, but he was down 28-9 before he threw his two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. WR Julian Edelman had 12 targets, six receptions, 106 yards, and one touchdown. The surprise was RB James White with 11 targets, eight receptions, 98 yards, and two receiving touchdowns.

The Patriots offense continues to struggle for long stretches of games and they now have a tough matchup at home against the Kansas City Chiefs. It remains to be seen if they snap out of their offensive funk against a defense that has also had consistency issues this season. I still trust Edelman, but the other players have been mostly fantasy misses this year. White had a big game against the Texans, but that was a game where they trailed the entire game and he saw 14 rushing attempts in addition to his eight receptions. The week before, he had only two rushing attempts and one reception in a game they led the entire way. He has a very high ceiling, but an incredibly low floor.

New Orleans Saints: The Saints ended up clinching the NFC South, but Brees had a very quiet game with just 184 yards passing, one passing touchdown, and no picks. The Saints ended up settling for four field goals in this game and the only player that found the end zone was QB Taysom Hill. He finished with two rushing attempts for 33 yards and one touchdown and two receptions for 12 yards and another touchdown. WR Michael Thomas was very quiet with eight targets, six receptions, and 48 yards. TE Jared Cook ended up being their leading wide receiver with six targets, three receptions, and 85 yards.

The Saints have a very tough home game against the San Francisco 49ers that could decide home-field advantage throughout the NFC postseason. Thomas and Cook are good fantasy options, but the other wide receivers and tight ends are dicey plays in that tough matchup.

New York Giants: QB Daniel Jones seems to be declining as the season progresses and this was a terrible game with 240 yards passing, one touchdown pass, and three interceptions. TE Kaden Smith had six receptions for 70 yards and no touchdowns and no other player had more than 50-yards receiving. WR Sterling Shepard had three receptions for 40 yards and the only receiving touchdown of the game.

The Giants have a great fantasy schedule to close the season. They are at Philadelphia, Miami, and at Washington the next three weeks of the season. Jones needs to play well in these good matchups and show that he is a quarterback that can take the next step in 2020. WR Darius Slayton has had some big games this year and he is a young player that could emerge in the final month of the season.

New York Jets: The Jets looked like they had turned a corner over the last three weeks. They were averaging 34.0 points per game in those three games and QB Sam Darnold was looking like a good quarterback. They crashed and burned at winless Cincinnati, scoring six points and gaining just 209 yards net passing. WR Robby Anderson was the only bright spot with 10 targets, seven receptions, 101 yards, and no touchdowns. TE Ryan Griffin had only five receptions for 30 yards and WR Jamison Crowder was a major disappointment with two receptions for eight yards on nine targets.

The Jets have a great home matchup against the Miami Dolphins, but they became the first team in NFL history to lose two games to teams that were 0-7 or worse in the same season. They also scored only 18 points and had only 238 net passing yards the last time they faced the Dolphins in Week 9. Playing any Jets player in fantasy football is a roll of the dice.

Oakland Raiders: The Raiders have been an unmitigated disaster for the last two weeks. They have been outscored 74-12 in the last two weeks and their only touchdown in those two games was a touchdown pass to third-string tight end, Derek Carrier. Other than him spelling his name the same way I do, there is not much redeeming about him in the fantasy football world. He had eight receptions and no touchdowns headed into this game. TE Darren Waller was the only bright spot with seven receptions for 100 yards on nine targets. Backup RB DeAndre Washington was the only other player that had more than 15-yards receiving.

They host the Tennessee Titans in Week 14, who have won three straight games and are ninth against fantasy quarterbacks in their last two games. Waller is probably the only reliable fantasy option, as WR Tyrell Williams has not shown much in recent weeks.

Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles had a catastrophic loss on the road against a Miami Dolphins team that is among the least talented rosters in the NFL. That does not matter in fantasy, the Eagles passing game was very productive in fantasy. They had 310 yards passing, three passing touchdowns, and one pick.

WR Alshon Jeffery was great in his return with 16 targets, nine receptions, 137 yards, and a touchdown. The only other player with more than 45-yards receiving was TE Dallas Goedert. TE Zach Ertz was active, but not healthy and he was held to three receptions for 24 yards while Goedert had six receptions for 66 yards. RB Miles Sanders and WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside scored the other two receiving touchdowns.

The Eagles have another great matchup against the Giants. Even if they are losing games they should not be losing, it figures to be another good matchup for their passing offense.

Pittsburgh Steelers: I think that Mike Tomlin should be in the running for coach of the year with a team that is playing third stringers at quarterback, wide receiver, and running back on a weekly basis and still has seven wins with a team that is 24th in yards gained and 28th in yards gained. This offense has not scored more than 20 points since Week 9 and they have not had a 30-point game the entire season.

QB Devlin Hodges had 212 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and one pick in just 21 pass attempts last week. WR James Washington was solid with four targets, four receptions, 111 yards, and one touchdown. Nobody else had more than 30-yards receiving. The floor is low for all players in this offense.

They have a nice matchup at Arizona, but it is hard to trust anyone in the passing game at this point.

San Francisco 49ers: The 49ers offense did not do much in the wind and rain in Baltimore as they had only one passing touchdown and scored only 17 points. QB Jimmy Garoppolo had only 165 yards and his touchdown pass went to WR Deebo Samuel. Samuel was tied for second on the team with 41 yards receiving, behind WR Kendrick Bourne and his 42 yards receiving. WR Emmanuel Sanders also had 41 yards receiving and TE George Kittle finished with 17 yards receiving.

The 49ers have a low floor in the passing offense, but the wind and rain did not help matters and they still had a chance to win in the fourth quarter. They should be a better passing offense in a tough matchup at the New Orleans Saints in Week 14. Kittle is always a must start and Sanders and Samuel seem to be their best wide receiver fantasy options, but as you can see with the game they had this week, their floor can be very low.

Seattle Seahawks: QB Russell Wilson was not flashy with 240 yards passing and two passing touchdowns, but he made big plays in the passing game that helped his team earn a win. WR DK Metcalf led the way with seven targets, 75 yards, and no touchdowns. WR David Moore and RB Rashaad Penny scored the two receiving touchdowns.

The disappointment of the game was WR Tyler Lockett with three targets and no receptions. Since his monster game against the Buccaneers in Week 9, Lockett has tallied four receptions for 64 yards on nine targets in three games. Fantasy owners are going to have a tough decision when the Seahawks face a Rams D that Lockett had four receptions for 51 yards and one touchdown against in Week 5.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Buccaneers were up 25-0 at the half, so they played the game safe in the second half and QB Jameis Winston finished with 268 yards passing, no passing touchdowns, and no picks. It was the first game he failed to throw a touchdown, but it was also only the fourth game that he failed to throw an interception.

Amazingly, the leading receiver was WR Breshad Perriman with six targets, five receptions, and 87 yards. TE O.J. Howard had a major role with six targets, five receptions, and 61 yards. That means that WR Mike Evans had only 53 yards and WR Chris Godwin had only 50 yards.

This seems like an outlier game where some strange things happened with the Buccaneers up 25-0 at the half. The Buccaneers have a Week 14 matchup against an underrated Indianapolis Colts defense.

Tennessee Titans: Titans QB Ryan Tannehill is not flashy, but he is completing 72.7 percent of his passes and he has posted a QB rating of 113.9 on the season. He keeps making enough plays for them to win games and against the Colts. He was 17 for 22 with 182 yards, two passing touchdowns, no picks, and a QB rating of 131.3.

The problem in fantasy is that efficiency does not really lead to fantasy points and WR A.J. Brown was the leading wide receiver with just 51 yards receiving and the receiving touchdowns were scored by backup RB Dion Lewis and WR Kalif Raymond, who had four receptions on the season.

The Titans are a better NFL offense than fantasy offense and they hit the road to face the slumping Oakland Raiders in Week 14.

Washington Redskins: Washington pulled the upset in Carolina, but QB Dwayne Haskins had only 147 yards passing, no passing touchdowns, no picks, and a QB rating of 69.9. They relied on a running game that had 30 carries for 248 yards and three rushing touchdowns. WR Kelvin Harmon led the way with three receptions for 51 yards and WR Terry McLaurin was a dud with two receptions for eight yards on just four targets.

There just is not much upside on this team passing the football. They have a road game at a Green Bay Packers D that is ninth against both fantasy quarterbacks and wide receivers.
