Dynasty Players to Trade Before NFL Free Agency (2020 Fantasy Football)

There is no offseason in dynasty leagues, as fantasy owners work year-round to improve their teams. The official start of NFL free agency is still nearly a month away, which presents an opportunity for shrewd dynasty owners to capitalize on the multitude of question marks on NFL rosters around the league. Most fantasy owners fear uncertainty, so take advantage of that.

Below I discuss two players that dynasty owners should target right now because their values would skyrocket if things break their way in free agency. I also identify two players that dynasty owners should consider selling as free agency approaches.

Players to Trade For

Robby Anderson (WR – NYJ)
The Jets offense was stuck in the mud for much of last season, but Robby Anderson still mustered a respectable 52-779-5 receiving line in the face of serious adversity. Anderson is an unrestricted free agent and has made no secret of his desire to escape New York to play for a team with a high-powered offense. Can you imagine Anderson galloping down the field in a vertical offense with a quarterback unafraid to push the football deep? I am salivating.

Anderson is currently just WR39 on FantasyPros’ Expert Consensus Rankings, but his middling ranking does not capture the potential upside of him landing in a premier fantasy offense on one of the many receiver-needy teams (Saints, Eagles, Cardinals, Steelers, Colts, Patriots). Anderson’s fantasy prospects would skyrocket. And if he ends up elsewhere? It can’t be worse than the 2019 Jets, which is the price you’re paying for him anyway at WR39. Go get Anderson now — he makes a fantastic buy-low before the free agency dominoes start falling.

Matt Breida (RB – SF)
I just drafted Matt Breida in the 21st round of a 12-team startup dynasty league and could not believe how far he has fallen in the eyes of fantasy owners. Breida’s value is at an all-time low because he rode the pine in the playoffs as Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman ran rampant all the way to the Super Bowl. Let’s not forget that Breida is freaky talented — per NFL Next Gen Stats, Breida’s 22.3 MPH top-speed was the highest achieved by any NFL player during the entire 2019 season.

Breida also happens to be a restricted free agent this offseason — maybe a team needy at running back will pry him out of San Francisco, and Breida wrestles command of a wide-open backfield (think Kenyan Drake or Damien Williams). Even if Breida stays in San Francisco, Kyle Shanahan loves running back committees, and Breida is an injury away from returning to relevance. Buy now while Breida is priced at his floor.

Players to Trade Away

Aaron Jones (RB – GB)
Jones was finally set free last season, and the result was an immaculate 19 touchdowns and RB2 finish, trailing only Christian McCaffrey. Selling Jones now seems crazy, but dynasty owners could probably ask for a king’s ransom when dangling an electric 25-year-old running back in one of the league’s premier offenses. Jones has an exceptional outlook for 2020, and even accounting for the inevitable touchdown regression, he still should be a focal point of Green Bay’s offense and a fantasy monster.

My concern for Jones lies in the future beyond 2020. He will be a free agent after next season, and there are no guarantees that the Packers will offer him the type of contract required to keep him in the Green and Gold. Additionally, Matt LaFleur spoke at the NFL Combine about Green Bay’s need to acquire a third running back to ease some of the load off Jones and Jamaal Williams. Reading between the lines, LaFleur could be hinting that this extra running back may also be groomed for a real role in 2021 should the Packers fail to retain Aaron Jones. See if you can get a major haul for Jones now before the Packers tip their hand any further.

Alshon Jeffery (WR – PHI)
I’m not sure how great the return would be for a 30-year-old wide receiver currently recovering from a very serious Lisfranc injury, but I suggest that Jeffery’s dynasty owners attempt to find out. Rumors are flying that the Eagles want to trade or cut Jeffery, but there would be massive salary cap ramifications to either move — odds are he stays in Philadelphia for another season.

It is a foregone conclusion that Philadelphia will upgrade their wide receiver corps this offseason, likely via both free agency and the draft. How many targets will be available in Philadelphia’s offense if the Eagles spend high draft capital on a wide receiver while also signing a free agent? Jeffery has a long road to recovery in time for the 2020 season, and it would behoove fantasy owners to sell Jeffery now while his big-time name still gives him a semblance of value.
