10 Dynasty Buy & Sell Candidates (Fantasy Football)

Few are disputing that the NFL’s free agency period positively affected the likes of Austin Ekeler, Kenyan Drake, and Will Fuller or that the stock of players such as Phillip Lindsay, David Njoku, and John Brown had tanked. These are the obvious ones, but who are some other athletes that dynasty leaguers should target or jettison now before their value falls? Our featured pundits have come together to shine a light on their favorite buy and sell candidates in dynasty leagues.

Q1. Which player are you selling now in dynasty leagues and why? Also, what kind of return are you looking for?

Mike Evans (WR – TB)
“Hear me out on this one. It’s all about cost and opportunity in dynasty. It’s never easy to give up an asset who holds value inside the top two rounds of a dynasty startup, but we must factor in the emergence of Chris Godwin. It’s extremely unlikely that a team produces two top-10 wide receivers, let alone two top-six receivers, which is where both are being drafted right now (Godwin – WR5, Evans – WR6). Sure, they both finished top-six in 2019, but the Bucs also had one of the worst defenses and threw the ball 630 times. Tom Brady’s playstyle much better suits Godwin’s area of the field, as he doesn’t take nearly as many deep shots as Jameis Winston did. While Evans is still an asset, there must be a teeter-totter effect with him and Godwin in the ADP, and to this point, that hasn’t happened. You can likely get at least two early first-round picks in exchange for Evans.”

Derrick Henry (RB – TEN)
“I’d be looking to offload Henry in dynasty leagues as soon as possible. After Henry’s incredible finish to the 2019 season (including his playoff performance), his value is higher than it ever has been. My main concern with Henry is the risk of a breakdown, as he saw 321 touches last season and 230 the year before that. He also had 406 touches in 2015 in his last year at Alabama. We’ve recently seen David Johnson and Todd Gurley start to crumble and Henry seems like a reasonable guess as the next one to decline. I’d be looking for a low-end WR1 or a young, high-end RB2 plus a sweetener.”
– Donald Gibson (FantasyPros)

Jordan Howard (RB – MIA)
“Remember when the Vikings signed Latavius Murray in 2017 and the instant buzz that generated around the fantasy community as people dreamed of what Murray’s numbers would look like with bell-cow touches? It’s understandable if you don’t since that excitement was short-lived as Minnesota drafted Dalvin Cook and those bell-cow visions were gone. If you don’t remember the Murray love, how about 2018 when the Browns signed Carlos Hyde or last year when the Bears inked Mike Davis? Like Dalvin Cook before them, Nick Chubb and David Montgomery quickly squashed the dreams of their owners. As soon as Howard signed with the Dolphins, the buzz began to the tune of a 55-spot rise in his Fanball ADP. It makes little sense to me. Miami has 12 picks in the 2020 draft, five of which are in the first two rounds. They will be adding to their backfield and it will likely be one of the top backs in the class. Sell Howard now while you can and look to get the highest pick you can get or use him to sweeten a multi-player deal.”

Christian McCaffrey (RB – CAR)
“Like it or not, I’m selling McCaffrey because I can guarantee you I’m going to have a bidding war and someone is going to pay a major ransom. It isn’t as though I think McCaffrey is overrated, but rather that people seem to forget just how quickly elite running backs tend to fall off. Based on historical precedent, chances are high that McCaffrey, like David Johnson and Todd Gurley, won’t be RB1s within two years. Yes, you are losing the game’s top fantasy asset, but I’d wager you can land Joe Mixon, A.J. Brown, and a late-first round rookie pick all for CMC. Someone will overpay, so don’t miss out on your chance to cash in.”
– Bobby Sylvester (FantasyPros)

Todd Gurley (RB – ATL)
“I’m moving on from Gurley. Yes, he may have another productive season in him, but now is the time to craft the narrative that gets a deal done. Gurley is alone on a solid offense with a great opportunity. Cash in on that last gleam of optimism before he becomes a bit-player or dissolves completely. This is your opportunity to potentially move Gurley for a higher side first-round pick to the right team on the edge of competing.”

Q2. Which player are you buying now in dynasty leagues and why? Also, what are you willing to give up to get him?

Jamison Crowder (WR – NYJ)
“With the expected departure of Robby Anderson now a reality and with the Jets turning to new-arrival Breshad Perriman to replace him, Crowder appears locked in as Sam Darnold’s go-to receiver. Yes, New York is likely to add receiving talent in the draft, but regardless of the talent that is added, I like the odds of Crowder’s role as a target magnet in the slot remaining secure, especially in 2020’s early weeks. He was targeted 106 times in 13 games with Darnold, an average of 8.2 times per game. Crowder was able to turn that volume into 15 or more PPR points in seven of those games, finishing as the WR18 from Weeks 6-16. He remains undervalued and is a perfect target as a throw-in in a multi-player deal or you can try snagging him with a mid-second round rookie pick in PPR leagues.”
– Matthew Hill (DataForce Fantasy Football)

Hayden Hurst (TE – ATL)
“Not many have caught on to the fantasy impact that Hurst can have with his new team. I’ve recently acquired him for a late second-round pick in a dynasty rookie draft, which is bananas. He went from the No. 2 tight end on a team that threw the ball 439 times last year to the No. 1 tight end on a team that threw the ball 683 times. Count me in as someone who believes Hurst is more talented than Austin Hooper, who finished as the TE6 in the Falcons’ offense each of the last two years. While it may take him a little bit of time to get acclimated, he’s now a legitimate top-12 tight end in dynasty formats.”
– Mike Tagliere (FantasyPros)

Preston Williams (WR – MIA)
“This is a deep one but I am all in on Williams. Everyone remembers DeVante Parker’s incredible season because he finished on such a tear, but let’s not forget that the rookie, Williams, had even more fantasy points on the season than Parker before his injury. If you think Parker is a fringe WR1 then what does that make the more raw 22-year-old Williams? I’m not saying he is a bona fide alpha-dog receiver, but I’m certain he is better than the WR5/WR6 that his value sits at right now. You could land him for third-round rookie pick right now and I’m doing that all seven days of the week.”
– Bobby Sylvester (FantasyPros)

David Montgomery (RB – CHI)
“I’ll probably have to shield myself from readers throwing tomatoes, but I’m buying Montgomery. He was my favorite rookie before the draft last season and he showed flashes of brilliance alongside bouts of inefficiency in 2019. I expect the Bears to be better in general, especially with Nick Foles, and they should present a sensible, more-balanced offense that involves Montgomery more consistently. I’d be looking to move a limited-role WR2/3 for Montgomery, like a Jarvis Landry or Tyler Boyd type of receiver.”
– Donald Gibson (FantasyPros)

T.Y. Hilton (WR – IND)
“I think Hilton is a prime target. He’s been bombarded with injury and quarterback issues, but Rivers is a real upgrade and Hilton is a tier-one talent. Use the past couple of disappointing and inconsistent seasons to grab the 30-year-old and see if you can do it with a lower-tier wide receiver and a second-round pick. Hilton has great seasons left in the tank.”
