DraftKings Outlaw Tour Preview: Legacy Shootout

DraftKings Outlaw Tour Preview: Legacy Shootout

With the PGA Tour on hold until June, the DFS golf industry has turned its attention to the Outlaw Tour. The Outlaw Tour is one of several mini-tours that has continued to hold tournaments through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. All events on the Tour are played in Arizona, and it offers an avenue for professional golfers to take their game to the next level and eventually get their PGA Tour card.

A field of 57 golfers will be teeing it up this week for the Legacy Shootout in Phoenix, Arizona. This is officially the second last event of the 2019-20 Outlaw Tour season. It is important to note that the tournament is only two days long and will take place from April 21st to April 22nd.  The field is headlined by the current money leader Riley Wheeldon, Matt Gurska (fourth on the money list), Ryan Porch (fifth), and Matt Marshall (sixth).

Once again, DraftKings will only be offering Showdown Golf for each of the two rounds. Just like PGA DraftKings tournaments, each player is assigned a salary and you will have a salary cap of $50,000 to work with. Regular DraftKings scoring rules will apply. The biggest GPP tournament offered this week is a $10 entry that has $80,000 of total prize money – including a whopping $20,000 payout to the winner.

Course Preview

This week’s event will be played at The Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix, Arizona. This will be one of the more challenging tests of golf the Outlaw Tour will see. Located at the base of Phoenix’s South Mountain, the course offers plenty of great spectacles for the golfers. Golfers will need to take advantage of the four Par 5s the course features. It will not be easy, however, as the average distance on the par 5s is 558 yards.

Legacy Golf Resort will play as a par 71 and will measure at 6,801 yards long. The weather looks hot and sunny, so the course should play firm and fast. Golfers should see plenty of carry on their drives and should be able to take advantage of the wide fairways. While there is no course history to go off of, there are several key stats to focus on this week. The Outlaw Tour webpage keeps track of season stats and this will be crucial to use as we consider our best plays this week.

Key Stats

  • First Round Scoring Average (minimum five rounds)
  • Par 5 Birdie Leaders
  • Total Eagles
  • Top 10 finishes (minimum four events)

Recommended Plays

Jimmy Gunn ($10,200)
The 39-year-old Scottsdale, Arizona native has had a very solid season. Gunn has two runner-up finishes, as well as a third, in just six events. He is also known for his scorching hot starts. Gunn is second on Tour with an average opening round score of 66.67. The birdie-machine should make for a nice GPP play.

Riley Wheeldon ($10,000)
Wheeldon is the 2019-20 money leader on the Outlaw Tour and has eight top-10 finishes. He is second on Tour in total birdies and tied for third in total eagles. While you will have to bite the bullet at such a hefty price, Wheeldon is a very safe way to start out your lineup.

Jeremy Paul ($9,800)
Paul has finished in the top-10 in all seven of his events this year – including three second-place results. He should also set up well for this long, challenging course. Paul ranks second on Tour in Par 5 birdie percentage (63.33%). His first-round scoring average of 67.71 is good enough for fifth on Tour.

Derek Bayley ($9,400)
Among all competitors with at least five rounds under their belt, Bayley leads the Tour in first-round scoring average. He averages an impressive score of 66 on his opening rounds. Bayley is a strong ShowDown play, as he also is third in Par 5 birdies, and third in total birdies. He is able to go low with the best of them, and this is evidenced by his seven top-10 finishes this season.

Ryan Porch ($8,800)
In just seven events, Porch has five top-10 finishes. He is third on Tour in first-round scoring – averaging an impressive score of 67.14 on his first day. Sixth on Tour in total eagles, Porch offers plenty of scoring upside for your GPP lineups.

Eric Lilleboe ($8,200)
Lilleboe is coming off of a T7 showing at the Arrowhood Classic last week. In five starts this season, Lilleboe has four top-10 showings – including a second-place finish. He is eighth on Tour in scoring average and should be able to post some birdies for your lineup.

Mitchel Carlson ($7,900)
Carlson has two top-30 showings in his last two events, including a solid T12 showing at the Arrowhood Classic last week. Carlson shot rounds of 68-67-70 to finish at five-under par for the week. An in-form golfer who is priced reasonably should make for a solid play.

Ryan Williams ($7,700)
At this very same golf course last November, Williams was apart of a two-man team that finished third at the 2-Man Turkey Bowl. His partner and him shot the lowest round of anyone that week – an 11-under score of 60. Williams is a native of Phoenix and should know this course very well. He could be a sneaky good play with low ownership.
