Dream Fits For Late-Round Prospects (2020 NFL Draft)

It’s draft week!

We’re now just mere days away from ridding ourselves from the endless mock drafts, big board updates, and constant rumors. We’ll be able to analyze the selections and determine how a player fits with their new organization and what their career outlook could be in that new spot.

I don’t know about you, but while I find the first round entertaining, I enjoy the later rounds even more. I love seeing where these lower-tier prospects end up going and whether or not they’re going to be able to make an impact for fantasy football. So, with just a few days left, I thought it would be fun to put together a list of a few names and match them with their dream destinations. This doesn’t always mean that it will be their dream destination from a fantasy football perspective, but simply what offense would be the most fun to watch them in.

With that being said, let’s dive in.

Dream Fits

AJ Dillon (RB – Boston College) – Seahawks

AJ Dillon is a massive human being at 6’0/247 and showed us that he’s an incredible athlete at the NFL Combine. While I have concerns about Dillon’s projection to the NFL level, which you can read here, I do think he can bring value in a rotational backfield. One of those backfields that can use a player like Dillon is the Seattle Seahawks. Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny are still working their way back from injuries and may not be ready to go week one of the NFL season. If that’s the case, they need someone there who can carry a large workload and Dillon’s proven he can do just that throughout his college career. Dillon could probably be had with a fourth round pick and would be a perfect compliment to the RBs that they have in Seattle currently.

Lynn Bowden (WR – Kentucky) – Ravens

Lynn Bowden was a WR at Kentucky, but injuries to the QB position this past season had him shift over and help carry the offense. While Bowden certainly will not be asked to throw the ball much at the NFL level, he’s electric with the ball in his hands. Bowden’s a good WR, but he also is a solid RB that can make people miss in the open field. Bowden brings versatility to an offense and he’d be a ton of fun to watch paired up with Lamar Jackson. He can be a slot WR, but could be used creatively to the point of lining up in the backfield next to Jackson.

James Proche (WR – SMU) – Cowboys

James Proche has some of the best hands in this entire class, but his projection as purely a slot receiver at the next level has him falling down the draft board a bit. He dominated the competition at SMU and could make an impact for fantasy football right out of the gates. One of the offenses that has a dire need for a slot receiver right now is the Dallas Cowboys. They currently have Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup as their starting wideouts, but are moving forward with Cedrick Wilson as their slot receiver for next season if they do not draft anyone else. Here’s my take on that depth chart: They need to draft someone else. Proche would fit right into that offense in the vacated Randall Cobb role and instantly become a favorite target of Dak Prescott.

Anthony McFarland (RB – Maryland) – Falcons

Anthony McFarland has the juice. This kid can fly on the football field and he has the athletic profile you want in a RB prospect. With that being said, McFarland needs to work on the more nuanced aspects of the position like his vision and patience. He’d be best served as a complimentary back to start his career that can be a factor in the passing game and out in space. This would give him time to adjust to the NFL level, while still using his athleticism as a weapon in year one. The Atlanta Falcons have always been keen on using two RBs in their offense and Todd Gurley is only on a one-year deal. McFarland could come in and take some work off of Gurley and then take over next year if the Falcons choose to not re-sign the former LA Rams RB.

Devin Duvernay (WR – Texas) – Chiefs

The Chiefs are building a track team on offense with guys like Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman. Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson also bring good athleticism to the table, but they’ve been hit or miss throughout their respective careers. The Chiefs could look to add a slot receiver to this offense, that can also scoot, like Devin Duvernay out of Texas to really put this unit over the top. Duvernay ran a 4.39 at the NFL Combine and he has incredible play speed to go along with his sure hands. People are sleeping on Duvernay in this class, but that would all change with this landing spot.

K.J. Hill (WR – Ohio State) – Patriots

K.J. Hill is an excellent route-runner and is going to be an ideal slot receiver in the NFL. The New England Patriots currently have Julian Edelman, but he’s about to turn 34 years old and is coming up on the end of his career. Hill would be the ideal replacement for Edelman and would allow the Patriots to revamp their WR corps on the run as they wouldn’t have to spend a high pick. Hill’s most likely going to go in the 4th/5th round of the NFL Draft and would slide in and take over immediately as soon as Edelman decides to hang them up.
