DraftKings Golden State Tour Preview: The Legacy Classic

DraftKings Golden State Tour Preview: The Legacy Classic

KK Limbhasut was victorious at the GCU Championship last week after an impressive opening round of 10-under par 61. Limbhasut tied the course record at the Grand Canyon University Golf Course and did not look back. This was his first win on both the Outlaw Tour and the Golden State Tour after several recent top-five showings. Back in the field for this week’s Legacy Classic, he will be the guy to beat.

A field of 75 golfers will tee it up for the Legacy Classic, a three-day tournament beginning on Monday. Only two weeks ago, the Outlaw Tour hosted the Legacy Shootout on this same course. There will be plenty of the same golfers from that event, so there is some course history to examine.

Dylan Wu and Limbhasut are the betting favorites this week to win at +550. Other notables in the field include Jeremy and Yannik Paul, Matt Picanso, Mark Anguiano, and Colton Yates. The strength of the field is not great, so we must dig deep to find nice value plays for our DraftKings lineups.

DraftKings is once again only offering Showdown game styles this week. Round one will begin at 10 a.m. ET on Monday, so be sure to have your lineups done before lock. The big GPP contest this week is a $10 entry with over $100,000 worth of prize money being handed out, including a $25,000 prize to the winner.

Course Preview

This week’s event will be played at The Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix, Arizona. Located at the base of Phoenix’s South Mountain, the course offers plenty of great spectacles for the golfers. Golfers will need to take advantage of the four Par 5s the course features. It will not be easy, however, as the average distance on them is 558 yards.

Legacy Golf Resort will play as a par 71 and measure at 6,801 yards long. The weather looks hot and sunny, so the course should play firm and fast. Golfers should see plenty of carry on their drives and should be able to take advantage of the wide fairways. The winning score at the Legacy Shootout was -12 over a two-day span, so I expect the final score to be around 18-under par or higher this week.

Key Stats

  • First Round Scoring Average (minimum of five rounds)
  • Par 5 Birdie Leaders
  • Total Eagles
  • Top-10 finishes (minimum of four events)

Recommended Plays

Matt Picanso ($10,000)
Although Picanso has only played four events on the Golden State Tour, he is second on the Money List. Picanso has won the last two events he has teed up in and is riding some scorching hot form. In four competitions this season, he has two firsts and a second. The only thing to worry about is the fact that he hasn’t played since late February. We don’t know where his game is currently at right now, but the results speak for themselves.

Mark Anguiano ($9,800)
The Golden State Tour money-leader should come in at decent ownership this week after a disappointing T20 finish at the GCU Championship. Prior to last week, Anguiano had a streak of seven-straight top-15s, including a win and three second-place finishes. Anguiano has by far the best opening round scoring average on Tour. He averages 67.08, which is excellent news for your Monday showdown lineup.

Jeremy Paul ($10,200) and Yannik Paul ($9,200)
The Paul brothers continue to impress this year on both the Outlaw and Golden State Tour. Jeremy Paul finished T5 at the GCU Championship with a round of seven-under-par 64. He is second in scoring average and total eagles on the GST and also leads everyone in first-round scoring average on the Outlaw Tour.

Yannik Paul finished second at the Legacy Shootout a couple of weeks ago after shooting rounds of five-under-par 66. He has three-straight top-10 showings on the Outlaw Tour and should come in a little less owned than his brother after a mediocre finish of T28 at the GCU Championship.

Alistair Docherty ($9,000)
The Canadian has three top-10s on the Outlaw Tour this season and is coming off a solid T13 showing at the GCU Championship. He is T6 on the Golden State Tour in total eagles, so I expect him to score well on the four Par 5s.

Riley Wheeldon ($8,700)
The Outlaw Tour Money Leader continues to be under-priced. He played the Legacy Shootout two weeks ago and finished T11, even after a lackluster opening round of 72. After a mediocre T32 finish at the GCU Championship, Wheeldon shouldn’t be too highly owned.

Kaleb Gorbahn ($8,500)
Gorbahn had an impressive T9 showing at the GCU Championship last week that included a closing round of seven-under-par 64. He also finished T6 at the Legacy Shootout two weeks ago, so the form is definitely there. Gorbahn is fourth on the Outlaw Tour in total birdies and can quickly rack up points for your DK lineup.

Sam Triplett ($8,400)
This is a tremendous value for a golfer who is second on the Outlaw Tour Money List. He is also coming off a solid week at the GCU Championship, where he shot a second-round score of eight-under-par 63. In five starts this year on the Golden State Tour, Triplett has a win and three top-25s. He is top-10 in both opening-round scoring average and Par 5 birdie leaders.

Mitchel Carlson ($7,900)
Carlson stormed up the leaderboard on the second day of the Legacy Shootout the last time golfers teed up on this course. He shot a six-under 65 to finish fourth in the tournament. Carlson finished 12th the week prior and was knocking on the door of his first title. Last week, Carlson took a step back, missing the cut on the number (-3) at the GCU Championship. He really struggled on his second day, but let’s hope this drives his ownership down.

Nick Arman ($7,400)
Arman is coming off a solid week at the GCU Championship that included rounds of 65 and 66. The 22-year-old made all four cuts on the All-Pro Tour last season, including a T10. He offers some high upside as a cheap option and should come in very low owned this week.
