DraftKings PGA Lineup Advice: Wyndham Championship (2020)

DraftKings PGA Lineup Advice: Wyndham Championship (2020)

In just his second career Major tournament, Collin Morikawa stole the show at the PGA Championship. The young star shot rounds of 69-69-65-64 to finish at 13-under par and win his first-ever illustrious PGA Major title at TPC Harding Park. His combined score of 129 on the weekend marked the lowest weekend score by a major winner ever. The 23-year-old will be a name to watch for a very long time and this could be the beginning of a very special career.

The PGA Tour will now head to Greensboro, North Carolina, for the annual Wyndham Championship. Played at Sedgefield Country Club, this Donald Ross design is a very gettable course and we can expect plenty of low scores this week. Unfortunately, the field won’t be one of the strongest of the year, but there is still some high-level talent in the mix.

Brooks Koepka ($11,400), Webb Simpson ($11,200), Patrick Reed ($10,700), Tommy Fleetwood ($10,500), and Paul Casey ($10,300) are the highest priced golfers on DraftKings this week. Sedgefield Country Club is a course that favors no particular type of player. Many low salary golfers including C.T. Pan, Brice Garnett, Jim Furyk, and Ryan Armour have some very high finishes at this event. This is a week to be different with your DFS lineup, and leave plenty of money on the board.

Here are the past five winners of the Wyndham Championship:

  • 2019 J.T. Poston (-21)
  • 2018 Brandt Snedeker (-21)
  • 2017 Henrik Stenson (-22)
  • 2016 Si-Woo Kim (-21)
  • 2015 Davis Love III  (-17)

Course Preview

Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross design that will play as one of the shortest Par 70s on the PGA Tour circuit this season. While golfers of all types of skill sets have had good success here, players with above-average driving accuracy tend to do very well. Fairways are tighter than average and are tree-lined. Hitting fairways will allow for much easier access to the pins and tons of birdie opportunities.

This week, golfers will be making the switch to Bermuda greens. The greens at Sedgefield tend to roll faster than normal, depending on weather conditions. Green sizes will be larger than the Tour average, and golfers will see a fair amount of undulation and run-off areas. Strong approach and proximity numbers will be key this week to success. It should really be a fun tournament after a week of tough scoring at TPC Harding Park.

Key Stats

  • Driving Accuracy
  • Strokes Gained: Approach
  • Performance on Bermuda Greens
  • Birdie or Better
  • Opportunities Gained

Recommended Plays

Webb Simpson ($11,200)
Happy Webb Simpson week! With finishes of 2nd, T2, and 3rd in his last three times out, it’s no secret Simpson loves this golf course. Simpson is first in strokes gained: total, in the last 50 times out on Bermuda. He is an excellent putter on this surface and has the sharp approach play to go real low once again.

Paul Casey ($10,300)
Casey played magnificently last week in the season’s first Major. He recorded an impressive T2 showing while finishing second in strokes gained: tee-to-green and fourth in strokes gained: approach. His elite ball-striking prowess should carry over well at Sedgefield this week. Casey has a 13th and a third-place finish at the Wyndham Championship in the last five years.

Sungjae Im ($8,800)
I do not expect Im to carry heavy ownership this week at all. He has been in a bit of a slump but had three rounds in the 60s at the 3M Open a few weeks ago and has solid course history here. The talented Korean rates out very well on Bermuda surfaces. In the last 50 rounds on Bermuda where scoring is easy relative to par, Im ranks fourth in strokes gained: total and seventh in DraftKings points.

Si-Woo Kim ($8,600)
Kim is a prior winner of the event and is in excellent form of late. He is coming off a T13 performance at the PGA Championship last week and has made his last seven cuts on Tour.  In the last 50 rounds on Bermuda where scoring is easy relative to par, Kim ranks 13th in strokes gained: tee-to-green. He placed T5 here last year.

Ryan Moore ($8,100)
With two consecutive T12 showings (3M Open, Barracuda Championship) Moore is trending at the right time. He now heads to Sedgefield where he has sixth, 24th, and 10th in the last five years. In the last 50 measured rounds, Moore ranks 13th in the field in opportunities gained. Expect a good week from Moore.

Joaquin Niemann ($7,900)
Joaquin the dream heads to Sedgefield with some good memories. He finished 13th here last year and 33rd in 2019, so it is a course that suits his eye. Niemann ranks first in the entire field in opportunities gained over the last 50 rounds. He is a birdie machine if he gets rolling it well with the putter.

Rory Sabbatini ($7,500)
The mid-7k range is filled with plenty of gems. Harold Varner III, Tom Lewis, and Mattias Schwab are all names that catch my eye. However, I cannot overlook Sabbatini’s course history at Sedgefield. With a sixth and fourth-place finish here in the last three years, Sabbatini is a Donald Ross design killer.

Charl Schwartzel ($7,400)
Schwartzel is another nice buy at this price. With a T3 finish a few weeks ago at the 3M Open, and a respectable 58th place at the PGA Championship, he is trending nicely. Schwartzel has a third-place finish the last time he teed it up here in 2015. In the last 50 rounds on Bermuda where scoring is easy relative to par, Schwartzel ranks ninth in the field in strokes gained.

Henrik Norlander ($7,200)
With finishes of 23rd, 6th, 31st, and 12th in his last four events, it’s hard to ignore Norlander at this price. The swede is an accurate driver of the golf ball who is very elite with his irons. Norlander ranks 10th in driving accuracy and 46th in strokes gained: approach, in 2020.

Kyle Stanley ($6,800)
The 6K range is filled with many high upside darts including Jason Kokrak, Adam Long, Brice Garnett, and Ryan Armour. However, it is Stanley who catches my attention the most. Stanley is coming off a 32nd place finish at the 3M Open and a 12th at the Barracuda. He finished 13th at Sedgefield last year and has the perfect combination of driving accuracy and approach play to score well once again.
