FanDuel PGA Lineup Advice: Wyndham Championship (2020)

FanDuel PGA Lineup Advice: Wyndham Championship (2020)

After two straight weeks of loaded fields and amazing leaderboards, the PGA Tour heads to North Carolina for the last regular-season event. In looking at FanDuel for this week’s Wyndham Championship, there are seven golfers priced at $11,000 or above. FanDuel provides DFS players with a salary cap of $60,000 to select six golfers for an average roster spot of $10,000. Brooks Koepka is the only golfer priced in the 12K range at $12,200. Webb Simpson just narrowly missed the 12K range coming in at $11,900. Tommy Fleetwood ($11,700), Patrick Reed ($11,600), and Paul Casey ($11,500) round out FanDuel’s top five highest-priced golfers.

Work at having a solid process week in and week out as opposed to getting bogged down by recency bias or the ups-and-downs of the weekly golf grind. Any golfer is capable of winning and even the best golfers can miss the cut. Whether you win or lose, golf is one of the most entertaining fantasy sports to follow because you get four days of action. Good luck and, most importantly, have fun!

Tournament Notes

  • Sedgefield Country Club is located in Greensboro, NC. The Par 70 Donald Ross original course measures 7,127 yards.
  • This course doesn’t favor one type of golfer over another. Any type of golfer can play well here, though Donald Ross courses tend to fit the eye of ball-strikers slightly more than “bombers”.
  • The Bermuda greens are a tad smaller than normal and have a good deal of undulation to them. They measure a 12 on the stimpmeter.
  • There are four Par 3s (175, 175, 225, and 235 yards), 12 Par 4s (averaging 440 yards), and two Par 5s (both are reachable and average a 59% Birdie or Better percentage).
  • 156 players are scheduled to tee it up this week with the top 65 (and ties) making the cut and playing the weekend.
  • Brandt Snedeker set the course record here in 2018 with a first-round 59. Henrik Stenson (2017) and J.T. Poston (2019) hold the 72-hole record with a score of 22-under par. Poston became the first golfer since Lee Trevino in 1974 to win a PGA event without making a bogey.
  • Each of the last four winners have shot either 21-or-22 under par.
  • Previous winners schedule to play this week includes J.T. Poston (2019), Brandt Snedeker (2018 & 2007), Henrik Stenson (2017), Si-Woo Kim (2016), Davis Love III (2015, 2006, 1992), Patrick Reed (2013), Sergio Garcia (2012), Webb Simpson (2011), Arjun Atwal (2010), Ryan Moore (2009), and Carl Pettersson (2008).
  • This week is the final week of the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 competition, as well as the FedEx Cup regular season.

Course Fit & Key Statistics

Overall Statistics
My customized overall stat model measures all stats (driving, approach, short game, putting, etc…) from both a short-and-long-form standpoint. The best golfers, in terms of stats, for my customized model this week (in ranked order) are Paul Casey, Corey Conners, Webb Simpson, Russell Henley, Henrik Norlander, Harris English, Ryan Moore, Chez Reavie, Sergio Garcia, and Jason Dufner.

Recent Form
The golfers that rate out the best in my customized recent form model (in ranked order) are Brooks Koepka, Harris English, Henrik Norlander, Brendon Todd, Billy Horschel, Webb Simpson, Abraham Ancer, Adam Long, Patrick Reed, and Sepp Straka. Scott Stallings and Si Woo Kim lead this field with seven straight made PGA cuts. Austin Cook, Henrik Norlander, Brandon Hagy, Sepp Straka, Matt Wallace, and Brendon Todd have each made five straight cuts. Harris English, Paul Casey, Sungjae Im, Sergio Garcia, Webb Simpson, Patrick Reed, Stewart Cink, Mark Hubbard, and Denny McCarthy are the only golfers in the field that have made at least 80% of their cuts this season.

Scoring
This course is a birdie fest and the event is similar to a Korn Ferry Tour event. It is one of the easiest on Tour and the winner has been at least 21-under par each of the last four years. Playing it safe and collecting pars will not be enough to make the cut, let alone contend. I will be looking at golfers that have the ability to score in bunches and put up low scores. The 10 golfers that rate out the best as having scoring potential (in ranked order) include Webb Simpson, Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka, Billy Horschel, Cameron Davis, Sam Burns, Harris English, Henrik Norlander, Si Woo Kim, and Tom Lewis.

Donald Ross Courses
Donald Ross courses typically have blind tee shots, multiple dog legs, and strategic bunkering. However, they are probably most known for their undulating greens with large run-off areas and slopes. A strong approach game is needed. In the last five years, the PGA Tour has visited four different Ross courses at various times (Aronimink GC, Detroit GC, East Lake GC, and Sedgefield CC). The golfers that have played the best on these courses during the last five years (in ranked order) are Billy Horschel, Paul Casey, Webb Simpson, Jim Furyk, Joaquin Niemann, Brice Garnett, Ryan Armour, Ryan Moore, Sepp Straka, and Rory Sabbatini.

Official World Golf Ranking
All the statistics and course history are good to know but sports (in particular, DFS golf) oftentimes comes down to playing the best golfers. Sure, salary is involved but fitting as many of the world’s best golfers in your lineups increases your chances for success. This field is not anywhere as strong as the last two weeks but there are still some world-class golfers playing. The 10 highest ranked golfers (according to OWGR) in this week’s field are Webb Simpson (No. 6), Brooks Koepka (No. 7), Patrick Reed (No. 9), Tommy Fleetwood (No. 13), Justin Rose (No. 17), Paul Casey (No. 19), Sungjae Im (No. 27),  Shane Lowry (No. 28), Kevin Kisner (No. 34), and Chez Reavie (No. 37).

Favorite $11,000+ Plays

Webb Simpson ($11,900)
He named his daughter “Wyndham” because he loves this course so much. In his 11 starts, he has eight top-11 finishes, including runner-up finishes each of the last two years. He also won in 2011. He is the number sixth-ranked player in the world and plays well here every year even though he comes in as a favorite. There is no reason to think he won’t contend again this week.

Justin Rose ($11,400)
I think he’ll be a nice pivot from Paul Casey who should garner a decent amount of ownership after his runner-up at last week’s PGA Championship. Rose went relatively unnoticed this past week finishing T9 on a stacked leaderboard. I am hoping that he stays under the radar. This course is favorable to those that can consistently strike their irons and get hot with the putter. Last week, he gained four strokes on approach and seven with the flat stick. This is more of a gut pick but I am betting on talent this week and the fact that he wouldn’t be playing here if he wasn’t going to take it seriously. The former number one player in the world has been very inconsistent since the restart with three MCs to go along with a T3, T9, and T14. He hasn’t played this course in years but he has been inconsistent at Sedgefield, as well with two missed cuts and two top-six finishes. The last time he played here was in 2009 when he finished T5.

Favorite $10,000 Plays

Harris English ($10,900)
He has made the cut in all six of his Wyndham starts though his T10 in 2012 is his best finish. He also comes into this week with some nice form. His T19 at the PGA Championship gave him his seventh top-20 finish in his last eight events.

Brendon Todd ($10,500)
Though he hasn’t been able to close out tournaments, he has been on leaderboards all summer. This field is not as stacked and so the local product might be able to contend for his third win on the season. In his last three events, he was T17 at the PGA, T15 at the WGC, and T22 at the Memorial. In the last 24 rounds, he is ninth in total strokes gained.

Si Woo Kim ($10,100)
He won this event back in 2016 and was T5 last year. This course history combined with his decent recent form makes him an interesting option this week. He just finished T13 last week at the PGA Championship, giving him his seventh straight made cut on the PGA Tour. It was also his third top-20 finish during that streak. He is also a former winner of The PLAYERS Championship, so he is not just a fluke winner on the PGA Tour. In the last 24 rounds played, he is seventh in the field in fantasy scoring He is someone that routinely outscores his finishing position.

Favorite $9,000 Plays

Kevin Kisner ($9,800)
He finished T19 at the PGA and T25 at the WGC. He also finished third at the Rocket Mortgage. Kisner hasn’t played here the last two years but made the cut in his two previous starts, including a T10 in 2016.

Ryan Moore ($9,600)
He has good course history here and has been playing well. He finished T12 at both the Barracuda and the 3M Open. He finished T40 at the Memorial. He didn’t play this event last year but was T6 in 2018. He has made the cut in nine of his 11 starts, including his last five. The 2009 winner has a total of four top-10 finishes here.

Harold Varner ($9,200)
The North Carolina resident has been hitting the ball well this year but has struggled a little bit with the flat stick. He was able to get that under control last week and finished T39 at the PGA Championship. He has made the cut here each of the last three years, including a T10 in 2017.

Sepp Straka ($9,100)
It wasn’t a great finish, but his T66 at the PGA Championship was his fifth consecutive made cut. During that stretch, he has three top-20 finishes. Included in that stretch is a T8 at the Rocket Mortgage, which is a Donald Ross design and course that requires lots of scoring. He is also one of the best birdie makers in the field, which is partly due to the fact that he is third in the field in Par 5 scoring over the last 24 rounds. In the last 24 rounds, he is 10th in fantasy scoring in this field.

Jim Furyk ($9,000)
He missed the cut at last week’s PGA Championship but won his Champions Tour debut the week before. Overall, he has made the cut in three of his six PGA Tour events since the restart. He has good history here with a T4 in 2018 and a T10 in 2016. I will also be considering Corey Conners ($9,900), J.T. Poston ($9,800), Russell Henley ($9,700), Maverick McNealy ($9,500), and Doc Redman ($9,300) in this 9K range.

Favorite $8,000 Plays

Henrik Norlander ($8,800)
Norlander has made the cut in five straight events, including a T6 at the Memorial and a T12 at the Rocket Mortgage, which is a Donald Ross-designed course. He has really been hitting the ball well lately. In the last 24 rounds, he is fourth in total strokes gained, fifth in approach, and sixth from tee-to-green. He also had top-10 finishes at the Sony and RSM so he has shown that he can score in bunches and finish high at tournaments.

Brice Garnett ($8,500)
He has been very up and down this season as he has made the cut in only three of his last six starts but he has finishes of T11 (Honda), T17 (RBC Heritage), and T26 (3M). He has good course history with T20s in 2016 and 2018. He was T6 last year. In the last 24 rounds, he is 18th overall in total strokes gained. I will also be considering Matt Wallace ($8,900), Sam Burns ($8,800), Adam Long ($8,700), C.T. Pan ($8,000), and Nate Lashley ($8,000).

Favorite $7,000 Plays

I will take some shots in this range for my MME lineups, but I don’t like anyone for more than 2-4% exposure this week. This is a weaker field and so the 7K is going to be even worse than normal. I also do not expect to go heavy on the top-end players so I will not need to dip too much into this range. Some golfers I will be considering include Wesley Bryan ($7,900), Mark Hubbard ($7,900), Brian Stuard ($7,900), Stewart Cink ($7,600), Seamus Power ($7,600), and Tyler Duncan ($7,400).
