Feast or Famine: Week 2 (2020 Fantasy Football)

Welcome to Feast or Famine! A weekly breakdown of the most variable player rankings by standard deviation from FantasyPros Weekly ECR.

These players are ranked as either sensational hits or relative busts, and I’ll be giving my reasoning on why you should lean one side over the other. Having no clear group consensus means these are the decisions that could win or lose you your weekly matchup or DFS lineup. Knowledge is power in these situations, so let’s begin.

Quarterbacks

Jared Goff (LAR)
Highest rank: QB11. Lowest Rank: QB26.

The Eagles have been one of the best run-stopping defenses dating back to last year. This could have the Rams resorting to the pass more often and Goff returning to usual form after a zero touchdown performance last week created a tough recency bias against him. The Rams defense should easily outmatch the Eagles banged-up offensive line and put them in position to score early and often as Goff gets back on track with Woods, Kupp, and Higbee at his disposal.

Prediction: FEAST

Tyrod Taylor (LAC)
Highest rank: QB14. Lowest Rank: QB30.

Taylor looked not great, to say the least in his starting debut. In fact, he had the lowest completion percentage among all starters at 53.3%, and this was against the Bengals defense that allowed the ninth most points to quarterbacks in 2019. Taylor needs a massive rebound to instill any confidence in those who need him to perform.

Prediction: FAMINE

Running Backs

Mark Ingram (BAL)
Highest rank: RB18. Lowest Rank: RB37.

Listed as a feast last week, Ingram owners watched in horror as Dobbins punched in two goal-line carries. Now he lines up against the Texans, who just allowed the most rushing yards in the to running backs Week 1. Ingram led the backfield in touches but Dobbins’ role is likely to increase each passing week of the season. Try to capitalize on Ingram’s upside while we can early in the season and bet on the touchdown variance rebounding in a nice matchup.

Prediction: FEAST

Honorable Mention Feast: Austin Ekeler, Zack Moss

David Montgomery (CHI)
Highest rank: RB16. Lowest Rank: RB36.

This may come as a surprise to some as the Bears are 5-point favorites at home, which is typically the right game for Montgomery to see volume. However, the Giants appear to be far more exploitable through the air versus on the ground. Anyone who watched the Steelers-Giants game on Monday night saw the impact newly acquired LB Blake Martinez made, consistently making plays, especially against the run. Their pass defense was a different story, as they let up the third-most points to the position to Big Ben and company. I’m leaning towards believing the G-men make this game closer than we think and a weaker secondary submitting a less friendly script for Montgomery.

Prediction: FAMINE

Honorable Mention Famine: Melvin Gordon, Devin Singletary

Wide Receivers

Mike Evans (TB)
Highest rank: WR10. Lowest Rank: WR44.

Bruce Arians was quoted this week saying anything less than 10 targets a game for Evans would be disappointing. Evans should be back to completely full health after giving owners a scare in week 1. He gets a cushy matchup in the Panthers who just allowed 34 points to the Raiders. Fire up Mike in a get right game.

Prediction: FEAST

Honorable Mention Feast:  Amari Cooper, Emmanuel Sanders

Courtland Sutton (DEN)
Highest rank: WR18. Lowest Rank: WR52.

We could hardly picture a worse situation this week than there is for Sutton. An abysmal Vegas-implied team total of 17 and going against a top tier defense in Pittsburgh, all while carrying an injury designation. Even if cleared for play, this is looking like an extremely risky play.

Prediction: FAMINE

Honorable Mention Famine: Marquise Brown

Tight Ends

Zach Ertz (PHI)
Highest rank: TE3. Lowest Rank: TE11.

Ertz was out-produced by fellow tight end Dallas Goedert in every way in week 1, as Goedert led the team in targets, receptions, yards, and catch percentage. Is his unhappiness with his contract situation and possible trade rumors affecting his play? Who knows, but the likely return of Miles Sanders and the promised increased role for DeSean Jackson should allow this offense to run through more than just the stud tight end pairing. As he was drafted quite high in most leagues and still could easily return value, you’ll need a considerably good option to consider sitting him, however.

Prediction: FAMINE
