Week 2 Heat Index (2020 Fantasy Football)

Gadzooks. Week 2 in the NFL was both cruel and unusual, dishing out serious punishment to some of the biggest names in the game. As a result, fantasy football managers are scrambling to find replacements for so many injured players. Whether you’re looking for a quick fix or a season-long substitution, you’ve come to the right place.

Here’s a recap of the hottest “non-elite” players in Week 2. Can they stay hot, or will they flame out? Let’s take a look.

Robby Anderson (WR – CAR)

Robby Anderson is coming off a nine-catch, 109-yard performance against Tampa Bay in Week 2. Robby Anderson has 18 targets through two games, which puts him squarely as the WR2 behind D.J. Moore (22 targets) in Carolina. Robby Anderson has gone over 100 yards in back-to-back weeks. Robby Anderson is currently the WR5 in half-PPR leagues. And, finally, Robby Anderson is owned in just 69.9 percent of fantasy football leagues. His name is Robby Anderson, and he’s on the verge of a major — and rather unexpected — breakout campaign in his sixth year in the league.

Last week, I told you not to expect week-to-week heaters from this guy — and why not? That’s been Anderson’s MO since, well, forever. This week, however, I’m eating my words. On a middling team in the fireworks factory that is the NFC South, Robby Anderson could average eight to nine targets per game for the rest of the season. Not only should Anderson keep the fire burning against division foes, just look at his other matchups until the Panthers’ bye in Week 13: the Chargers, Cardinals, Bears, Chiefs, Lions, and Vikings. It seems like some exploitable matchups, and a potential shootout or two will make Anderson a sure-fire WR2 for the remainder of the season.

If you took a flier on Anderson in your draft, nice work. If not, see if you can still scoop him up in your league. Can’t get him but wish you could? DFS plays are calling your name.

Joshua Kelley (RB – LAC)

Joshua Kelley didn’t rush for a bunch of yards and a slew of touchdowns in Week 2. He didn’t catch a million footballs. He didn’t score a million points. So why is he in the Week 2 Heat Index? Volume. While Kelley’s Week 2 production numbers were pedestrian (64 rushing yards, 49 receiving yards), his opportunities were sensational. Kelley totaled a whopping 23 carries and two receptions in Week 2, and you know as well as I do: volume is essential in fantasy football, and 23 carries usually means bell-cow duties.

Did the Chargers attempt to beat the Chiefs by running the ball and dominating the time of possession? Probably. Does that mean we will see less action from Joshua Kelly? Not quite. If you were wondering whether Kelley would step into the Melvin Gordon role from a year ago, wonder no more. It’s happening. It’s here. It’s now — and it’s hot as hell. Look for Kelley to collect 12 to 15 carries and two to three targets per game as the season continues.

Darrell Henderson (RB – LAR)

Henderson took control of the Rams backfield in Week 2, and he carried the ball for 81 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles in Philadelphia. Henderson also reeled in two receptions for 40 more yards. The second-year rusher shined in place of Cam Akers and Malcolm Brown, both of whom were relegated to the sidelines as a result of a rib and finger injury, respectively.

Woof. The unforgiving wrath of the fantasy gods has taken a toll on the Rams backfield in this young season, but Henderson has emerged unscathed. As such, he’ll get an opportunity to lead the team in touches and targets for the next few weeks. The team heads across the country to play the 2-0 Bills in Week 3, which is a less-than-savory matchup for the youngster. However, The hapless Giants and Football Team are ready to be rolled on in Weeks 4 and 5.

It should be hard for Henderson to impress again in Week 3, but if his teammates stay sidelined for longer, he could deliver some immediate value. Look for a spark from Henderson right now, but don’t expect him to blow up every week for the rest of the season.

James Robinson (RB – JAC)

Through two weeks, the Jaguars have gone toe-to-toe with two really good teams in the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans. After splitting those games in dramatic fashion, the Jags don’t look like the dumpster fire many expected this season — and that’s due in large part to undrafted rookie running back James Robinson. In Week 2, Robinson had 16 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown, plus three receptions for 18 yards against Tennessee. His size and speed are going to be a problem in 2020, and as the indisputable RB1 in a surprisingly efficient and exciting offense, Robinson is heating up.

Robinson will cede some carries on some gadget plays to Laviska Shenault and some third-down action to Chris Thompson, but other than that, he’s in a prime position to resume control as the workhorse rusher in Jacksonville. Look for Robinson to dominate against the four worst rush defenses in the league when he faces the Dolphins, Bengals, Texans, and Lions from now until the team’s Week 7 bye.

Mike Davis (RB – CAR)

Mike Davis is going to fill in for Christian McCaffrey for the next four weeks at least, and that’s all you really need to know about that. Oh, you want a little bit more? Fair enough. Mike Davis stepped in to spell the Panthers’ lead rusher and fantasy football’s most viable asset in Week 2 when McCaffrey went down with an ankle injury against the Buccaneers. In his stead, Davis returned McCaffrey-esque numbers, catching all eight of his targets for 74 yards.

As long as McCaffrey is out, Davis has an opportunity to produce impressive results. If that means four to six weeks, then so be it. The heat index is all the way up on Mike Davis for at least a month. If you’re hurting at running back, or you’re looking to play some strategic defense against the other poor saps in your league, make a play for Davis and own a piece of that Panthers backfield for as long as you can — especially in PPR leagues.

N’Keal Harry (WR – NE)

N’Keal Harry caught eight of his 12 targets for 72 yards in a high-scoring affair against the Seahawks on Sunday Night Football in Week 2. This is one of those instances, though, where the box score doesn’t tell the whole story. While Harry’s targets and touches look good on paper, his sluggishness stood out on film. The receiver lacked explosiveness after the catch and couldn’t seem to stay on his feet. Harry’s best quality is his presence on a competitive team, which should qualify him as a worthy bench stash and bye-week filler for your fantasy team moving forward.
