8 Players to Buy & Sell (Week 5)

8 Players to Buy & Sell (Week 5)

Whether you’re in first or last, there’s still time to make moves in your league standings and the right trade can either solidify your place at the top, or push you into playoff contention. Buying low on Joe Mixon before his massive Week 4 performance would have surely felt good (it did for this writer), and it’s exactly what our featured experts suggested last week. And while Mixon’s price is now up, we asked a group of experts again to name players to consider targeting in trades while the opportunity exists. Get our latest list below.

Expert Buy Low Sell High
Mike Tagliere (FantasyPros) Diontae Johnson (WR – PIT) Mike Davis (RB – CAR)
Pat Fitzmaurice (The Football Girl) Marquise Brown (WR – BAL) Jonnu Smith (TE – TEN)
Dan Harris (FantasyPros) D.J. Moore (WR – CAR) Jonnu Smith (TE – TEN)
Richard Savill (Fantasy Six Pack) Julio Jones (WR – ATL) Jerick McKinnon (RB – SF)
Kyle Yates (FantasyPros) Diontae Johnson (WR – PIT) Mike Evans (WR – TB)

Q1. Who is your favorite buy-low trade candidate at this point in the season and why? Also, who are you willing to give up for him?

Diontae Johnson (WR – PIT)
“It’s been a couple of weeks since we’ve seen Diontae Johnson be a top-end contributor for fantasy football, which is not his fault in any way. He was knocked out of the game in week three early and the Steelers had their game postponed in week four. Fantasy managers typically operate with short-term memories and Johnson’s value is lower right now than what it will be in just a couple of days. He’s a solid WR2 with upside every single week and if you can sell someone like CeeDee Lamb, who is coming off a huge game, for Johnson, I would recommend doing that.”
– Kyle Yates (FantasyPros)

“I’m going with Diontae Johnson. His fantasy managers still may not know what they have in him. His concussion in Week 3 left them high and dry, and then his bye in Week 4 may have dug them a deeper hole. He’s seen the highest target share on the Steelers team, and it’s not even close. While JuJu Smith-Schuster has had some great matchups, he’s seen just 6, 8, and 5 targets in their three games. Johnson might be the No. 1 receiver for the Steelers this year and that needs to be baked into his rest-of-season ranking. If you can land him for middling WR3 prices, you absolutely should. He also got his bye week out of the way, which is an added bonus. If you can get him for someone like Marquise Brown or CeeDee Lamb, I would.”
– Mike Tagliere (FantasyPros)

Marquise Brown (WR – BAL)
“Brown ranks WR55 in fantasy scoring (half-point PPR) and hasn’t produced a TD yet. But Brown has 26 targets in four games — a healthy target count in an offense as run-heavy as Baltimore’s — and is averaging a respectable 4.0 catches a game. Brown is also averaging 15.1 yards per catch and 9.3 yards per target, with an average depth of target of 17.8 yards. The YPC, YPT and aDOT are all up from last year, and that robust aDOT suggests there are big games ahead. He’s a good target if one of your competitors is looking for RB help and you’re holding an RB with fragile rest-of-season value such as Josh Kelley or Jerick McKinnon. Hooray for Hollywood.”
– Pat Fitzmaurice (The Football Girl)

D.J. Moore (WR – CAR)
“Moore has been a frustrating wide receiver to roster, but he’s a prime buy-low candidate, particularly in advance of Sunday’s game against Atlanta. Like last year, Moore isn’t finding the end zone, and he has just 10 targets and six catches combined over the last two weeks. But he is fourth in the league in team air yard percentage (42.7%), and is still seeing nearly a quarter of the targets overall. Touchdown regression SHOULD happen, and right now, fantasy managers seem ready to move on. I’d swap him for his teammate Robby Anderson or other receivers coming off big games, such as CeeDee Lamb.”
– Dan Harris (FantasyPros)

Julio Jones (WR – ATL)
“Jones is in a slump right now, and comparisons to the latter years of Roddy White are something I myself have pondered. Either way you take the argument, Roddy White remained a commanding presence on the Falcons, just like Julio today. Julio will revive at some point and you could manage an upgrade from Adam Thielen, Stefon Diggs, or Mike Evans.”
– Richard Savill (Fantasy Six Pack)

Q2. Who is your favorite sell-high candidate at this point in the season and why? Also, who would you try to get in return?

Jonnu Smith (TE – TEN)
“Smith is off to a terrific start, currently ranking second in fantasy points per game. Not that it’s a fluke — Jonnu’s talent is legit — but 42% of his points have come from touchdowns, and TD scoring is a volatile source of fantasy scoring, subject to the fickle finger of fate. Plus, Jonnu’s schedule is about to turn murderous, with games against the Steelers, Bears, Colts (twice), and Ravens over the next six weeks. If you’re willing to part with Jonnu, you could try to flip him for a low-cost, high-upside RB such as D’Andre Swift or Chase Edmonds.”
– Pat Fitzmaurice (The Football Girl)

Jonnu Smith is someone I am trying to deal if I roster him. I know, tight ends don’t usually bring in a premium, but fantasy managers are getting pretty over the moon with Smith’s steady, if sometimes outstanding, fantasy production. The Titans may need to forfeit a game this year at this point, and with A.J. Brown set to return, Smith’s targets should regress, even if Corey Davis misses time. That’s especially true because Ryan Tannehill probably isn’t going to finish the season with the 554 pass attempts he is currently projected for, just given how the Titans want to run their offense. I’d swap Smith for Zach Ertz, a trade I’m sure fantasy managers could make, or a WR3 I could buy low on, like Marquise Brown or Michael Gallup.”
– Dan Harris (FantasyPros)

Mike Davis (RB – CAR)
“Davis has lived up to the FAB money you spent to acquire him, that’s for sure. However, this is the time you should look to cash in, as he’s coming off two games in which he scored a touchdown and performed like a top-15 running back. While he has a great matchup in Week 5 against the Falcons, an upcoming schedule against the Bears and Saints won’t be so kind. With Christian McCaffrey still 2-4 weeks away from his return, you should still be able to get a decent return for Davis. If you can trade him to an RB-needy team for Diontae Johnson, that would be the ultimate buy-low/sell-high.”
– Mike Tagliere (FantasyPros)

Mike Evans (WR – TB)
“Evans has been dominant so far this season, but he’s done this without Chris Godwin in the lineup most weeks. He’s seen his target totals drop down to four each of the two weeks that Godwin was playing this season, but has saved his fantasy day by finding the end zone on short passes. Godwin should miss this game, but Evans is also dealing with some of his own injury issues. If you can sell high on Mike Evans and get someone like Allen Robinson, who doesn’t have the long-term usage concerns that Evans does, I believe that that would be a fair trade.”
– Kyle Yates (FantasyPros)

Jerick McKinnon (RB – SF)
“McKinnon now has a touchdown in each of the first four games of the season. Yet, do not think there is touchdown dependency baked into the cake here. His usage far exceeds the other running backs in the current 49ers backfield. However, the question looms large for Kyle Shanahan of whether to alter the script to favor McKinnon when Raheem Mostert possibly returns in Week 5. And therein lies the uncertainty. McKinnon can package well-enough to get Miles Sanders, David Johnson or Todd Gurley in return.”
– Richard Savill (Fantasy Six Pack)
