This can lead to some interesting strategy sessions, as you are often no longer planning for just one game. For Week 6 we keep our focus to one of OwnersBox’s most interesting contests, the eight-person NFL drafts. The eight-person leagues span three weeks, with the pool of drafted players being eight quarterbacks, 16 running backs, 16 wide receivers, eight tight ends, eight kickers, and 24 IDP players. 

The 16 person leagues are also highly intriguing, but may not generate enough initial interest from those not comfortable with their depth of player knowledge (32 wide receivers, 32 running backs, and 48 IDP players are drafted in those contests). For the purposes of this discussion, we will focus our energy on players that can be had in eight-person drafts, or even as swaps. Since there are only eight quarterbacks, tight ends, and kickers drafted, and our recommendation is to fill your running back spots first (due to all the injuries) we will focus on the other two positions.

Things to remember 

• Contests span different lengths depending on size. Two-person contests last one week. Four-person contests last two weeks. Eight person contests last three weeks. 16 person contests last four weeks.
• Drafts now have two options, draft when full and scheduled drafts. You can now draft when you want.
• Two lineup swaps per contest (injured or reserve/COVID players can be swapped with no restrictions).
• You can draft a team for Week 6 games up until kickoff on Sunday.
• Players on a bye week can be swapped for free.

Adam Thielen (WR – MIN)

Opponents: ATL, Bye, GB

Adam Thielen versus the Atlanta Falcons secondary is the stuff fantasy football dreams are made of. 12th with 44 targets, 13th with 29 receptions, 15th with 364 receiving yards, and first with six touchdowns, Thielen is among the leaders in most receiving categories. He is the WR4 on a per-game basis and is a hot commodity at OwnersBox this weekend. You are going to need to pay up for him, but his upside and floor make him a tremendous get in the third or fourth round. Draftrooms that fashion themselves as smart are passing on Thielen because he has a bye next week. However, something that all OwnersBox drafters have yet to pick up on is that players on bye weeks can be swapped for free. Take the plus matchup, and swap to one of the studs set to return from a bye in Week 7.

Justin Jefferson (WR – MIN)

Opponents:  ATL, Bye, GB

Does Justin Jefferson really belong on eight-person league teams? With just 16 players being drafted in this format, drafters often focus on the in-app projections or one the receivers they view as a top-15 option instead of chasing matchups. The Vikings are on bye in Week 7, which means you will be able to swap Jefferson out for free for someone like Keenan Allen, D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, or Michael Thomas. Inactive swaps are free. While he was quiet in Week 5, Jefferson still leads the Vikings in receiving yards. This is just a one-game dalliance, and in Week 6 he gets a completely burnable Vikings secondary relinquishing the seventh most fantasy points to the wide receiver position. Jefferson has top-10 upside this week. Snare him at the end of OwnersBox drafts and focus on adding one of the names listed above once this week is over. 

Tyrell Adams (LB – HOU)

Opponents: TEN, GB, JAC

Adams played 89 percent of the snaps with Benardrick McKinney sidelined in Week 5 and is poised to take over the role with the veteran linebacker undergoing season-ending surgery. We cannot expect Adams to be as effective as Bernardrick had been this season, as he was playing at or close to an all-time high from an IDP perspective. Adams showed that he can be just as active as McKinney when he is active as he racked up seven solo tackles, six assists, one tackle for loss, and one fumble recovery. He has a plus matchup against the Titans run game in Week 6, so hopefully, he can approach seven solos for the second consecutive week. Green Bay will be a tough test for the Texans but should provide plenty of tackle opportunities against both the run and the pass. Finally, Jacksonville in Week 8 has surrendered the fifth most fantasy points to the linebacker position. 

Zach Cunningham (LB – HOU)

Opponents: TEN, GB, JAC

If you are willing to go early on IDP, Zach Cunningham is the player that has been going off boards first n OwnersBox draft rooms. He is tied for the NFL lead in total tackles and leads the league with 38 solo tackles. Eric Kendricks is right behind him, so depending on the tournament size you choose to join, these two should be on your ‘reach for IDP’ radar. He has three plus matchups on tap as outlined in our Adams discussion above. He is a must draft LB1 to begin with, but squaring off against strong running games that feature Derrick Henry, Aaron Jones, and James Robinson, should help Cunningham to deliver LB1 level performances at OwnersBox. Remember, assisted tackles are not scored, so we are indeed chasing solo tackles. Through five weeks of the season, no one has been better in that department than Cunningham. Adding him likely means you will need to wait on a receiver, which is precisely why someone like Justin Jefferson has such appeal.
