Q1. Who is your top waiver wire option of the week, and why?

I’ll go Frank Gore. Welcome to 2020. In his first game without Lamical Perine, Gore racked up 21 touches against the Dolphins, netting 11.6 PPR points and a top-24 finish. Think of him like David Montgomery. You’re rarely excited to start him, but when you have a running back who’s locked into 15-plus touches, he’s usable. With the COVID cases around the league going up every day, you’re going to need depth at the running back position.
– Mike Tagliere (@MikeTagliereNFL)

I don’t have a clear-cut “must-have” option on the waiver wire this week, and my top choice could change if we get positive word on Josh Jacobs‘ injury. But for now, it’s Devontae Booker. Jacobs was battling a hip injury heading into Sunday’s loss against the Falcons, and left late with an ankle injury, which sounds like a sprained ankle. We don’t have any word on the severity of the injury as I write this, but given Jacobs’ reaction and that ankle sprains can potentially lead to week-long absences depending on the type of sprain, I’m targeting Booker as of now. With no Jalen Richard, it’s been just Booker and Jacobs seeing carries of late, and Booker will be a strong RB2 if Jacobs misses time. The matchup next week against the Jets isn’t great, but they do give up plenty of fantasy points to opposing running backs because they allow touchdowns at will. Booker should be rostered as a high-end handcuff anyway, so unless we learn that Jacobs is a full-go next week, he’d be my top choice.

This week, there aren’t many attractive waiver wire options, unfortunately. With that in mind, plus the fact that we’re one week away from the majority of fantasy playoffs starting, I believe that it’s extremely important to add Alexander Mattison everywhere. If something were to happen to Dalvin Cook, which we nearly saw happen on Sunday, Mattison would become a valuable fantasy asset. If you’re holding onto a lower-tier WR that is unlikely to be put in your starting lineup throughout the fantasy playoffs, it’s worth dropping them to make sure you have Mattison on your roster.

Q2. Which notable waiver wire option for Week 13 was the most difficult to rank?

Probably Cam Akers because while I understand wanting to pick him up due to his increased role, but at the same time, we know Sean McVay wants to utilize a timeshare, which means three running backs are going to be getting touches, making it impossible to trust any of them in any given week.
– Mike Tagliere (@MikeTagliereNFL)

Cam Akers. On the one hand, Akers looked like the best running back for the Rams against the 49ers, scored a touchdown for the second straight day, and got much more work in the second half. On the other, we’ve been to this dance before, and Sean McVay seems truly happy only when he can rotate in all three Los Angeles running backs. I don’t feel confident in fantasy managers being able to confidently start Akers at any point going forward, yet he has to be ranked as a top pickup given his recent performance.
– Dan Harris (@danharris80)

This week, I might say all of them. There really isn’t a clear WW add, in my opinion, so all of them were pretty difficult to rank. With the upcoming schedule, Hilton is an intriguing option after reeling in his first touchdown of the season, but he’s not someone that fantasy managers should be clamoring to add.

Q3. For managers streaming a D/ST in Week 13, what readily available option (under 40%) should they target?

We’ve targeted the Jets every week, so why stop now? They’ve allowed their quarterback to be sacked 30 times through 11 games, which should help the struggling Raiders pass rush. On top of that, the Jets have turned the ball over 13 times, which leads to touchdown opportunity. The only team who failed to score more than five fantasy points against them in standard defensive scoring was the Patriots, who allowed Joe Flacco to score 27 points. With Darnold under center, the Jets offense hasn’t generated more than 22 points.
– Mike Tagliere (@MikeTagliereNFL)

You think I care that the Raiders are a terrible fantasy D/ST and don’t produce turnovers or sack the quarterback? Well, you’re wrong. Because they are playing the Jets. Particularly with Sam Darnold under center, the Jets are like Christmas morning for opposing D/STs. Put it this way – through 11 games, the Jets have allowed 116 fantasy points to opposing D/STs. That is more fantasy points than any D/ST has scored in the entire season thus far. If there’s an available D/ST playing against the Jets, just pick it up.
– Dan Harris (@danharris80)

The Chargers may be the best option for what’s currently available on the waiver wire. With the majority of fantasy managers rostering two defenses now heading into the playoffs, it becomes a little bit more difficult to stream the position. The Chargers take on the Patriots in week 13 and the Patriots offense hasn’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard here recently. They may find the end zone a couple of times on the ground, but Newton’s unlikely to put up a big performance passing and he may turn the ball over a couple of times. They can be viewed as a fine streaming option for week 13.

Q4. Which Week 13 waiver wire option carries the biggest risk of being a waste of FAAB dollars?

It’s Cam Akers, who many are thinking is well on his way to a breakout, though I just don’t see it with Darrell Henderson healthy.
– Mike Tagliere (@MikeTagliereNFL)

Most of them carry a big risk, frankly, but it’s Akers, for the reason I mentioned. He legitimately may need two injuries in front of him to have every-week value going forward. He’s worth the risk to pick up this week, but fantasy managers have to acknowledge that there is plenty of risk of wasting FAAB dollars.
– Dan Harris (@danharris80)

People are going to be excited to add Hilton after his big game this past weekend, but he’s done next to nothing so far this season to indicate that he should be a trustworthy fantasy asset.
